To CA MTs: I was told the reason I was laid off (along with others) is that - kiki

Posted: Jun 04, 2014

MM was laying off a lot of PT MTs. I accepted that since I have always passed their ridiculous 98% (and higher) audits and always worked my shift, etc. So no reason to fire me. However, I've been wondering if the real reason (since I see there are still PT MTs here) is that they don't want any employees from California (or any other state where the minimum wage is too high in their eyes). What do you all think? Are there any FT or PT CA MTs from MModal still working for MModal?

I was - anon

I was working PT for MM up until a couple of months ago in CA. I quit to go full time someplace else. I didn't feel as though they were trying to get me to quit, my TSM tried to get me to stay. But once I heard about the bankruptcy and the increasing accuracy, I left. I can't speak to your situation or the reasons they let you go. I could drive myself crazy looking for reasons, worrying about it, that's why I quit. I wish you luck in the future and all of us here in CA. We're going to need it.

Washington State has the highest minimum wage - sm

at 9.32. I live in WA State and have been full time for 9 years. I was recently transferred to a different region, as was told that work availability was a major issue in at least one BOB in West. Your layoff probably had more to do with work availability issues in your BOB/region and being part time than your state's minimum wage. Oregon has the 2nd highest minimum wage, with CA 3rd.

CA will be $13 an hour by 2017. - sm

WA State has yearly COLA increases in minimum wage. The City of Seattle will be $15 per hour phased in over 2 years.

Seattle just passed - mt

[ In Reply To ..]
To raise to $15 over the next 3-7 years. Those MTs are probably going to be gone.

And I would also think if you are a pro-union state - sm

you may be on the block as well..things are changing, and not for the better.

You have to look at the bigger picture. It doesn't - (sm) - Keypounder

[ In Reply To ..]
really matter what happens with minimum wage increases when it comes to MT, because medical transcription AS A WHOLE is on the chopping block. The work is starting to get pulled back from the MTSOs because doctors are entering their own data into pre-made generic forms in the EMR. They don't even require editors anymore. It's all going away, and soon.

So look at the picture as an EX-MT, because it's what we will all soon be. I'm already a laid-off, ex-MT. There aren't a lot of opportunities out there in the *real* job world for someone with mostly MT skills & experience. Many of us, either due to that fact, or where they happen to live, can only apply for traditionally lower-paid jobs. If those jobs paid a living wage, we'd have a lot more to fall back on as our MT jobs disappear than we have currently.

Kiki, when did you get laid off? I'm part-time - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
but not in CA and was wondering if the lay off is recent.

Not recently; I was laid off along with - kiki

[ In Reply To ..]
apparently many other part timers. I was told by my CCM it was because they no longer wanted to employ part time MTs, but that was obviously a lie because there are still PT MTs at MM. I am really starting to believe the reason for me was that I live in CA, a state that has labor laws in favor of the employee, and they don't like that at all.

CA MT - Working poor

[ In Reply To ..]
Hi Kiki,

I am a full-time MT still working here for MM from CA. I have been working for this company since 1995 before all the pay cuts handed down by management. Having a positive attitude about working for this company in the beginning helped a great deal, but then reality set in with even further pay cuts when I could not pay my bills any longer. At this time, I am going to school for a career in education, now in my 50s. I need to start all over again as I have lost everything (bankruptcy, foreclosure) working for MM. The only reason I am still here is to save a little money to pay for schooling to move on from the medical profession.

lay off - Ari

[ In Reply To ..]
I was laid off because I was "part-time" in August 2013. I live in Virginia. I do hope you took advantage of the unemployment and training you are eligible for. I can't remember what it was called because I am disabled and couldn't do the training, but when you loose your job because it was sent offshore you are offered training paid for by the employment/unemployment office and while you are attending the training you still receive your unemployment. Check it out, I believe you may have waited to long, but it doesn't hurt to try. Good Luck.

I was pt and live in CA but quit about a month ago - anon

I'm in CA and have worked for Mmodal (and Medquist) for several years. I haven't heard anything about layoffs, but then again I wouldn't until the day it happens. That's how they work.

Reason For So Much
Oct 03, 2012

I have read countless articles today that state that the reason that so much MT work is being outsourced is b/c there are lack of MTs on the US side working in the industry.  I love when the uneducated write these articles.  They are totally missing the entire reason work is outsourced, MONEY.  There would be plenty US based MTs to do the work provided we were paid what we are worth.  The reason the work even went over to India and other countries is b/c it is cheaper for the ...

What Could Be The Reason For Odd Line Counts?
May 12, 2010

According to the Escript, I'm doing an average of 300 lph on VR but usually at the end of 8 hours, I don't top 1100 liines most days.  On Dictaphone's ExSpeech, i used to consistently do 1800-2400 a day on a combination. I have noticed with EScript that 1 day a week, my lines will hit 1200-1300, and I even hit 1500 one  day, yet the lph were still 300.  It doesn't make sense. Yet Another Reason It's Unwise To Offshore

Possible Reason Only Some MTs Got Back Wages
Aug 08, 2013

My employer, who has several VA contracts, was audited by the DOL last year.  The findings of the audit were that the employer should have been paying us the prevailing hourly wage because the contracts were federal government contracts.  Many people got back pay for the period of time for which the books were audited, but not everyone did because the DOL only audited one of our accounts.  Even though all the rest of the MTs were paid exactly the same way (on a production basis), ...

The Reason For The Low Work Loads Is Multifactorial.
Dec 10, 2014

Let's say Nuance acquires a hospital account and 9 or 10 MTs fall for their line of crap and come on board with Nuance.  These MTs are kept  busy for awhile, usually only as long as it takes to get the VR adequately trained because entire workypes are now being completed in, like, half the time than it took to complete them with straight typing. Some worktypes, like many associated with ERs, are converted to front-end EHR and avoid arriving in anyone's queues at all, in any ...
