THANKSGIVING PTO - calgal

Posted: Oct 13, 2009

Asked for Thanksgiving off back in September and still have not been granted.  Have sent numerous emails asking for decision and still nothing.  Anybody else in same boat?

Per PTO guidelines, they have until - Just Sayin

October 19 to approve or deny. Still would be nice of them to let you know instead of waiting until the last minute!

I don't think they approve more than 2 weeks ahead. - Chickpea

I have found that PTO on Schedule Source is not approved until 14 days prior to the requested date/dates requested. I put in for a few days in Oct (which have each been approved exactly 14 days prior), and also entered PTO request for Thanksgiving on 9/16 (the first day we started Schedule Source,, but they don't approve this far ahead.

Hope this helps!

I haven't heard anything yet but I haven't emailed - sm

I cannot remember exactly how long ago I requested it off with PTO, but it was granted 2 days ago.

If they don't approve it, call in sick on Thanksgiving. - Worker Bee

It's not like there's going to be tons of work, and what we do have will be gone by noon. It always is.

If you call in sick, you don't have to give an explanation - just send an e.mail and say "I'm sick. Please apply (number of hours) of PTO for today.

what a great display of work ethics - unbelievable

Not everybody gets approved off for a holiday. When it is your turn to work, you just work it. By calling in sick, you put that burden on the rest of us to not only do our fair share, but now yours.

I was told you only get approved for one of the holidays, Christmas, Thanksgiving or New Years... not all three.

If you don't want to work your fair share of holidays, go work at the post office, but do not put more work on the rest of us.

I'm working all 3 holidays this year as I have for the past 3 years. I save my PTO for vacations.

I know from past experience that the work dries up usually sometime in the morning (on the West Coast), and then I'm forced to take the time without pay or use my PTO.

By calling in sick, no one gets hurt and no burden is placed on anyone, because THERE'S NO WORK!

In my book the people who are "unethical" are those (who are not scheduled to work) who jump on when there are holidays in order to get paid time and a half, and take everyone else's work. That's why we run out, and that's happened to me many, many times.

Think before you speak!

bring this up to your CCL - In the past, they are suppose to rotate these days.

You deserve both holidays off if you have worked them in the past.

#1 - Most of the time you do not get approved - HG

for a holiday because you are told that there are already enough people off.

#2 - 99% of the time there is no work because everyone is on grabbing a report as it comes ine.

#3 - The only way to get off is to call in sick. There is no rhyme or reason as to getting off holidays. Does not matter if you worked then last 5 Thanksgiving Days or Christmas Days -- you probably will not get off if you ask.

The reason I said that was I still remember that about 5 years ago I requested Christmas day off. It was denied (too many people off), so I did not attend a family function out of town. When I sat down to work my afternoon shift (on the West Coast) there was no work at all. So, I missed a family function because I was a "good worker."

I know there will be no work again this Christmas for the reasons I stated above. I'll end up taking the day off without pay.

The other thing we need to keep in mind is that India gets how many holidays a month???? And they don't have to work at all! The Indians are the new "preferred employees." Face it people, we're only here to provide backup for them!
Why always bring up India? - Who cares anymore....
[ In Reply To ..]
after all this time it's such a mute subject.

Holidays off are given selectively by whomever CTL/CCM wants to have off regardless of when request is time stamped.

jobs that we can no longer make a living with. You can't get unemployment if you are part-time. Seems to me the part-timers will be the first to go as India takes on more and more of MQ clients.

A few years ago, I asked for 4th of July off for a family reunion 600 miles away. My PS/CCM(acronym of the month-take your pick)said NO!! We need the coverage! And as we all know, holidays are never busy. Never. So, like a good girl, I stayed home. Sure enough, no work. Well, since then, 2 of my cousins and my last 2 remaining aunts have died. They were all at the reunion and I could have seen them, but stayed HOME out of some delusion that my job was more important than seeing my family. CALL IN SICK!

CBAY owns 69% of Medquist so of course those in India come first, it's their company.

we might all be sick at the same time during the holidays.

I have NO IDEA what it is like to not working holidays. I work in the early evenings which means, EVERY CHRISTMAS EVE (which sucks), Christmas Day, New Year's Eve (which sucks), New Year's Day, and Thanksgiving.

For Thanksgiving, we eat around 2:00 PM. Do you have any idea what it is like to try and work in the evening after stuffing yourself and with the turkey making you so tired?

What really stinks is having to not only work Christmas Day, but Christmas Eve? I count that as 2 holidays. A company I worked for years ago and then MQ bought them out used to give you Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve holiday pay. Although, if you work Christmas Day in the evening and New Year's Day in the evening, you did not get holiday pay which I think is much more fair. Working Christmas Eve AND Christmas Day, well, frankly SUCKS BIG TIME!!!!!

Well, still haven't heard whether I get Thanksgiving off or not. Want to go to son's house in Phoenix. Even my mother from PA is going to be there. If I call in sick they'll know I'm not sick from all my emails.

Sorry, I don't understand about the emails - Worker Bee

[ In Reply To ..]
I check my emails from my cell phone (Blackberry), so I check them all day long, no matter where I am. I'd go to Phoenix.

Holiday PTO - Shorty

[ In Reply To ..]
We got an e-mail the other day stating no one else can ask for PTO on Thanksgiving or Christmas because all the slots are filled!!! I thought you had to wait 60 days before a holiday to request it off. Looks like I will be working on Christmas which means I have worked EVERY holiday this year.

hey shorty - spade

[ In Reply To ..]
I would fight that Christmas one... no one is allowed to ask for a holiday earlier than 60 days out, the end of this month would be the earliest you can ask off for Christmas.

I would go above your supervisor and ask how the Christmas holiday was already approved and that it was not in compliance with company policy.

We need notice of 24-48 hours to be sick - got to be kidding me

[ In Reply To ..]
Our CTL has made the rule that we need to give 24-48 hours to be sick and that PTO to cover illness will be at her discretion, otherwise we need to make up the time. Wow.

WHAT? That's nuts - goinnuts

[ In Reply To ..]
Oh wait that isn't nuts, that's right I heard that "illnesses" will be sending us an email or a written note stating that they are coming to get us just so we have a heads up to let our bosses know 24-48 hours before the "illness" arrives.....!!!

New TSMs Istruction For Working Thanksgiving. Does This

told to clock in at beginning when scheduled.  If no work, clock out.  Then it states to check back EVERY 30 minutes.  If there is work clock in and begin working.  When there are no more jobs clock out.  Keep doing this until end of shift.  Isn't this requiring us to be available for 8 hours but unpaid (most likely)?  Doesn't this even go against MModal's current policy on no work available?   ...

Since The Window To Request Thanksgiving Has Closed

and the window to request Christmas is about to open, and the new rule our "scheduler" made up is that we can only take one of them, it would be nice if she would PROCESS THE THANKSGIVING REQUESTS SO WE KNOW IF WE CAN REQUEST CHRISTMAS OR NOT.    On a side note, since we can only take one of them, I suspect because she thinks it will make her job easier, that's going to throw way too many people working on completely dead holidays, which will lead to her having to fill out a ton ...
