Ghost in computer - frustratedMT

Posted: Jan 08, 2015

Anybody else having computer problems?  Slow to switch between programs.  Audio keeps playing when footpedal and keyboard are not touched and will not stop when keyboard or footpedal are touched.  Takes forever to download next note.  Was told by IT that my internet connection was too slow, so I upgraded it.  More money out of my pocket and it does not seem to have helped.  I am using a MModal windows XP model and get popups that say I need to update my internet explorer, but internet explorer 8 does not download if you have Windows XP.  Cannot wait for o'beer:30 to come around.

My computer was doing the same thing a couple of years back, tech told me it was my internet connection too. I bought my own computer (Dell) and haven't had a problem since (knock on wood). I've been using my own PC for a year now. They give you the bare essentials when you have the company supply the computer. I complained, complained and complained and never got anywhere, so talked to my husband and we decided to purchase my own and it is very fast.

Thanks, - frustratedMT

I was thinking I may have to do that. Cannot seem to get anywhere with IT. I suppose I would still have to contact IT as far as what programs I need to download. Hate to do even that.

The programs are easy to download just write down every website MModal uses like Schedule Source, InnerCircle and Remedy and so on. I forgot all of them when I switched and it took me a while to remember and set them back up.

open task manager - and see whats running

sometimes IE is going through the roof. sometimes it's svchost.exe. When one of those is using a lot of memory, everything comes to a standstill. Just shut down IE for awhile. If any other program is using a lot memory, it could be malware. Make a note of the name of the program and google it to find out.

Have you tried deleting your history - and cookies?

that slows me down when I forget to do it and brings out the ghost

Sorry, meant to reply to OP - nm

I clear cookies, history, and temp files routinely. Opened task manager - will take a while before I can look up what is on there. Right now frozen up, won't upload or download jobs - back on the phone with IT.
I have an XP, too - Same thing happens to me

so frustrating. I don't know why we can't have Windows 7. I know they've had some turned in when people quit. I talked to IT about it a week ago. Fortunately, I could understand Phil last time it happened. He deleted some ?? things and it has helped so far. He even asked how my Christmas was, lol

what is compatibility.exe? - frustratedMT

That program or whatever it is, is listed many times and has the highest numbers of anything. I did disk clean and also defragmented tonight, hoping tomorrow is better.

What works for me. - dnr

1. Run Antivirus (I use free version of AVG http://www.avg.com/us-en/homepage )
2. Run Malwarebytes (free)
3. Run CCleaner (free) http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
Run cleaner and registry checker. Don't bother clicking save registry backup when you click fix issues.
4. Run disk defragmentation (start menu, click my my programs, accessories, system tools, disk degragmenter)

Why are you still using XP? Mmodal is supposed to replace that with Windows 7. The current Fluency works a lot better with Windows 7. We were supposed to update to Windows 7 when they changed to Fluency 7. Plus, when XP no longer became supported by Microsoft, we had to change to 7. It is a HIPPA violation to use XP because it is no longer supported by updates.

Are you using a computer furnished by MModal? - frustrated MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I wish they would replace with windows 7. I was told when I asked that IT can fix anything on XP if we have a problem. The odd thing is, the back up disks they supplied from MModal are for windows 7.

Yes. Ah ha! I had the same thing happen to me! - dnr

[ In Reply To ..]
I ended up with a computer that was working in XP. I was lucky in that they had left the recovery disks (back up) that came with the computer. Whomever the user was before me, had altered the computer to run XP instead of 7 which really messed things up and caused all the problems you are noticing.

I ran the recovery disks which puts the computer back to the state it was when it came from the factory. Mine had 4 disks (your number of disks may be different if it is a different manufacturer or model) To run the recovery disks:

Insert the recovery disk that says disk 1. Then restart the computer and follow the directions on the screen. You will have to run windows update afterwards to get Windows up to date. You will have to reinstall any programs that did not come with the computer - like Fluency or your personal text expander if you use one. If you recently got a link to install the new Fluency, use that. Otherwise, once you have run the recovery, call support and they can do it remotely on your computer. It is good have support to install Fluency so you can get a ticket number. Then, you can use that ticket number to get downtime for your time fixing the computer. Tell your TSM that the Mmodal computer went down and you had to take your time to fix it and work with support. It has to be an Mmodal computer to get downtime.
I cannot believe this - - frustratedMT

computer is a Dell and the disks are for HP.

Appreciate all the tips. About the only think IT told me to do was pause LanDesk and that did not seem to help.

Really like my job, when things go well, but today was hell.
Too bad you don not have the right disks. - dnr
[ In Reply To ..]
Apparently the dummies never check the computers or what was returned before sending out a computer to an employee. Guess I was lucky(?) to accidently get the disks and get the right recovery disks.

Tell your TSM you are on XP and to get you a new computer. In the beginning, when they did performance management by actually watching your desktop while you worked (with permission), they saw that it was the fault of the slow MQ/MM computer that was causing my low line count.

I am still on XP on an MModal computer - no one has ever told me to update to 7. NM

I do NOT want to call "Phil" for this. Every time I call them, I end up getting frustrated. Thank you politicians for NOT seeeing the need to keep jobs on US soil. At the rate we are going, they better hope all the off shore people start paying US taxes cuz I sure am getting to the point that I can't afford them.

Definitely not your internet connection. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
That sounds more like a problem with insufficient RAM. Although, it does sound similar to the problem I had concerning the footpedal and audio. The longer the report, the worse it would get, and I had 4 times the RAM than recommended. What worked for me was disabling the spellcheck as you go function in Fluency. If that still doesn't work, try to get them to give you a new PC. Any IT worth his/her salt would know better than think that was an internet problem. What was your internet speed, by the way?

thanks for the tip, - frustratedMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I have gotten more help from this website than I did IT.

my speed is 5 mpbs - I know there are faster speeds, but my home computer is very fast using that speed

Plenty fast. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Even 1 mbps was fast enough when I had it. In fact, didn't notice a whole lot of difference with working when my ISP upgraded and gave everyone 10 mbps.

Ghost In My Machine? Brand New Computer
Nov 26, 2009

I bought a new Dell back in August and have nothing but problems with it. First I had a ? board error, then for a few days had a keyboard failure. During all this, my font size keeps changing. One day I can barely read it (looks like this) and other days, (it looks like this). The menu bars now are so small, I can barely read them, yet the font size is so large, the words run off the edge of the screen. I have spent most of my time off work trying to figure it out. I went into display and ...

Computer Age VS 6.1
Sep 10, 2010

I was just wondering how old some computers are that are having problems with 6.1 and if there are people with newer computers that handles it better.  Mine is a MQ computer that is 4 years old now and it bogs down quite a bit.  Everything is sluggish now.  I do have 1 GB of ram and 1.84 GHz, so 6.1 shouldn't take a toll on it as bad as it is.  I'm just wondering if I should ask the Q for an upgrade, if that is the problem.  Knowing the RAM and proces ...

Help MQ Computer
Sep 16, 2010

Need help! I don't use an MQ computer, since they don't want you to put anything personal on it, and most of my life, including banking, is on my computer.   My 4-year-old computer crashed and is in the shop for a couple days, and I decided maybe it's time to get a new one.  The problem is, DQS requires a 32-bit system, and so far all the new computers I've found are all Windows 7, which is 64 bits.   I also want to get a slimline, since it kills my ...
