quit job? - jkl

Posted: Jul 14, 2010

I am thinking about quiting my job at the hospital to try and work from home, but after reading some of the postings here i am wondering if that is such a good idea. Is there really a shortage of work out there? Do i dare take the chance?

dont quit and if you do... I will take your in house job - slim pickings

Been trying to get into a local hospital for a year.

Please.. Do not quit your current job until you have an at home position set up and tried out for a minimum of 2 weeks! If possible, stay part time at current job and do "at home" job part time to make sure.

I was hired a month ago at 2 different companies, both promising steady work. Well, within the first two weeks of one company, they were so disorganized and forgetful, there was a total of 5 reports for me to do. I would call and email every day and they would say ooops, sorry. I'll upload right now and then nothing would show up. They had told me work has slowed down to a trickle, but should be picking up soon. Thanks but no thanks. I still haven't seen my check lol. Company number two, a week afer I was hired, lost their huge EMR account, so the owner (who is also a worker) was forced to take the account back I was typing on. So I did about $60 in two weeks for each company. I would not quit an in-house job for at-home work in this job environment. I currently work for 3 different companies (just got hired for my third one this morning) and it is totally feast or famine. And this applies to medical and general transcription.

it may seem greener over - here but it is not

I would stay if things are stable there. It's shark-infested waters out here.

I quit my inhouse job and it was a mistake. There is - no shortage of work, just a shortage of -sm

honest, non-greedy MTSO's out here to work for. When you sign up, it all looks good on paper, but the reality is that their bottom-of-the-barrel dictators, slow software, and over-the-top-nitpicky QA will cut your earnings in half, or more. I used to make about $1200 per bi-monthly paycheck. Now I'm lucky to clear $600, and I work twice as many hours.

If I had it to do over again, I would STAY inhouse, as long as there is a "house" to stay in! And I would sock away as much of my earnings into savings as possible, because once you're out here, you'll continually need dip into those savings in order to pay your bills each month.

Maybe point out to your supervisor that you could do this from home. Worked for a friend of mine.

Keep what you have now. - Sue

Don't quit your job. Try to get the "at home job" as a secondary income, doing it per diem or pool. When you have enough experience and you feel confidence, then you can take that plunch.

Do you already have a company in mind to work for? - We could help U with that

You need to compare how much you make now in the hospital and how much you would probably make at home, and a lot of factors will come into play such as the platform they put you on, the account you get put on, and even which company you work for as lots of them say they have plenty of work for a full-time person but they actually don't . . . and if they don't you start losing money fast!

I would LOVE to have an in-house position.

Don't Quit - long-time MT

You would be absolutely crazy to give up an on-site job. I bet 90+% of us out here would kill for your position. Our pay sucks, we get little to no benefits and what we do get costs an arm and a leg. Seriously, think of working for an MTSO as the 21st Century equivalent of early 20th Century sweatshops. A lot of us got here when our hospitals outsourced their departments and we had no say in the matter... I can't believe you'd give up what you have! Good Luck!

I did the same thing 6 years ago. DON"T DO IT. - Backwards Typist

I thought the grass was greener. It wasn't, but it was still paying the bills.

Now it's no longer paying the bills and I kick myself every day for leaving. I tried to get back in, but nope. They hired 2 PT people to take my place and there haven't been any openings since then.

I suggest you stay where you are. You'll be thankful you stayed where you are at in the long run.

Suggestion: If you want to try it out, look for a PT job.

I'd stay put - just too volatile

Too many changes, cuts in pay, lack of work, turnover rampant.

Bird in the hand and all that.

Another point of view. - Happy MT Robin

I've been much happier working from home than I was in house. I didn't do the in-house job very long because I was going to go postal with the women in the med records department and the supervisor. I was also paid much less than the more experienced women and yet produced more than all but one of them. I make WAY more at home than I ever did in house.

If you're serious about it and just can't bear the thought of working in-house any more, find a part time job with one of the MTSOs working at night and on the weekends and see what their platform is like, what the account is like, what the pay is like, etc. If that one is horrible, try another one. You may find the one out there that fits you and has consistent work. That's how I found my current job. I started part time while I was still working in house and realized I liked it, liked the company, like the account, made a whole lot more, and the rest was/is history.

You have the flexibility to be picky at this point, so you can hold out for a job that suits your skill set and is in the pay range that you want/need.

Just make sure that if you are going to commit to working at home, you know exactly how much you need to make and how many lines that will be at the pay rate that you are being offered. Make sure that translates to a doable line rate that you can produce consistently. If the job is VR, do a lot of research on the platform and make sure you have objective opinions and experiences from people about how many lines are actually able to be produced. My experience has been that it's about 2/3 of what the companies really say it is.

Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

I agree with mtrobin. I wouldn't jump ship as fast from being in-house but if you are able to, take on some work at home for a little while while keeping first job. True, economy is lousy and stuff but you never know if it will work out unless you try. Really budget and see how much you can live on. I agree with the poster who mentioned about a having some savings. In-house is not always what its cracked up to be. I've seen in-house transcription downsized. In-house transcription is not the same in very part of the country. Just be prepared if decided to take that plunge.

DO NOT QUIT - Sassy Pants

I cannot stress that enough!

I left a $14/hr job to stay home to "do MT" b/c I was under the impression I would be making $10/hr minimum doing this.

WRONG!

I've been at it 2 years, with my 2nd MTSO, and I'm regretting everyday that I quit my big pay job. I only quit there b/c it was a long drive everyday (100 miles round trip).

If I knew then that I'd be making minimum wage now (if I'm lucky), I would've kicked my own A@@ and said stay put!

Do not quit your hourly (?) job no matter what.

Most of us at-homers would trade you in a minute

Everyone Quit!!
Apr 14, 2010

I am so serious.  Everyone needs to quit transcribing for a while.  We need to get this industry back to where we could actually make a decent living.  I am making less money now than I did 15 years ago.  It is absolutely ridiculous.  As long as we keep agreeing to all the junk that these transcription companies keep throwing at us, it will only continue to go downhill.  I really think I could make as much money at McDonald's than I am now.  Something ...

The pay cut hit me hard last PP and now, this is the third day in a row that not even an hour into my shift I'm out of work.  I don't have any PTO to fall back on and the NJA rate is just as bad...  I went to a friend and practically begged for a job until I find something else.  I'll be cashiering and doing store clerk duties for a little more than 10 bucks an hour.  I feel silly, because he usually hires high school kids and kids in their 20s, you know a ...

How To Quit...
Sep 20, 2013

I'm juggling 2 MTSOs as an IC. I cannot sustain this for very long, the plan always was to stick with the better, more stable one and phase out the other one. At the first company (I'll just call it FC), the pickings were slim. They said that once I clear QA, I'll get a back up account and running out of work will not be an issue. But the volumes were so low that it took me nearly a month to get out of QA (last week). Then the second company called, a month after I tested for them ...

Why I Quit
Nov 21, 2013

Since the last thread is down the page I thought I would add this. I worked on very difficult accounts for the last 5 years and never had a problem with audits (failed 1 or 2 in 5 years). Then at the beginning of this month I was switched to a new BOB, was audited after 8 days on the account (98.1%) and immediately put on 100% QA which means I would be working for less than minimum wage. Since the vast majority of my work is above the 99.5% they arbitrarily require, they would be getting all ...

I used to be very proud to be an MT. I loved my job. Jan 28, 2010

I Really Think My MTSO Wants Us To All Quit
Feb 03, 2012

Is every MTSO in this field rotten, and do they really hate us? Does it bring them money to get people to quit and then rehire all the time?
