just an outside observation - really?

Posted: Oct 16, 2011

I have seen a couple of posts recently about people getting fired. While I am just baffled about them getting fired in the first place, it makes me really wonder when they say "but I put in extra hours, worked extra hard, had perfect work but I was fired. I don't get it? If you are as great as you say you are or as hardworking and accurate as you would like others to believe, how do you still manage to get fired?

I think some people use fired and laid off interchangeably.

Yeah, they do use fired, laid off, terminated, etc. interchangeably; probably because when someone gets "fired" anymore a person really can't be sure if it was actually them or just poor management, especially if the person had worked for the company for a while. If the person was really that bad, why weren't they "fired" long ago -- just saying :-) Besides, if a person doesn't fit the company's agenda, well the company can try to get rid of the person for any reason just so they don't have to pay unemployment. I think that is what it is all about a lot of times anyway -- paying unemployment. If the company pays unemployment, their UE taxes go up.

Laid off--usually from a union position. Fired--let go for cause. At will - employee--can be let go without

cause. The vast majority of us are hired on an at-will basis and can be let go at any time without explanation. In that case, we normally qualify for unemployment insurance.

As for knowing if you're FIRED. Employers don't have to pay unemployment insurance to people who are fired FOR CAUSE; otherwise people would behave badly in order to get fired. If you didn't know you were fired lready, you'll know when your insurance claim is denied. Companies typically build cases for firing, though, so you probably got notice via e-mails putting you on notice that: work is below standard, you're not working your whole shift, you came back from vacation late without informing the company , displayed a poor attitude, etc., etc., etc. Gathering documentation to justify firing in case you challenge.

People should just drop the term "laid off." These days it almost always applies only to people working under a union contract which requires taking old workers back before hiring new. Lack of work over the summer, laid off but still officially an employee, back to work in September when it picks up again. That sort of thing.

I worked for a company for over 13 years. In the past 5 to 6 years, they lost multiple accounts, cut benefits, changed salaried positions to production work, completely dropped the ball on communication among a few. The reason for my termination? I didn't do enough "difficult dictators" and "by the luck of the draw" had too many "easy" ones. Seriously? I didn't get 100% on QA. Wouldn't I have if I had all easy dictators? How can a person who is NOT a MT determine what a difficult dictator is to me? I think they are looking to cut more from their budget. For the past few years, all new hires are paid a specific low line rate. I was grandfathered in on a pay scale. Firing me just saved them anywhere from $300 to $600 per month. Multiple that by firing several more "old timers". Quite a boatload of money saved.

Maybe they were looking in records when they did not have to or falsifying their records (hours/pay, etc.). Just a thought....

Maybe they were using their health insurance. Employers - often get tipped off about

which employees are running up the health insurance premiums. Or maybe they fall into a group felt likely to in future.

Getting fired isn't about how well you worked. It is about the employer saving money. Our department, 40-strong- just got canned. They plotted our demise starting 2 years ago. It is all about greed with the hospital and personal greed. We all worked hard and we had a great team, but it didn't matter. We got the ax anyway.

Observation

I think the docs are catching on or something.  All day today, I have gotten nothing but stat dictations by docs I haven't done in WEEKS and these are docs who usually do not do stat dictations unless absolutely necessary.  I've also noticed that a lot of them are actually spelling out really simple medical terms or medicines which they have never done before.  I wonder!   ...

Just An Observation

and maybe it doesn't make sense, but if you bring a patient's ADT info in through ADT and it says whether the pt is M or F, you'd think the ASR could be programmed to read that particular gender and then use it throughout the report, whether the dictator said he/she or him/her.  I don't know...it was just something that crossed my mind while correcting the umpteenth ASR report with gender inconsistencies, when the dictator clearly stated the correct gender in the first p ...

Wondering If Anyone Else Has This Observation...
Dec 29, 2009

Lately I have been setting a timer for an hour and have actually done this for a long time, just to see what I do in an hour... seems of late is getting harder to make more than 18.00 to 20.00 an hour... and I have 28 yrs experience... seems to me something has been set that makes it impossible to do any better, no matter the dictators, the difficulty of the dictation, etc, etc. etc... Anyone else seem to think something is up?  Not mentioning company... ...

My Observation About This Field...
Apr 26, 2011

I have been a working MT (IC status) for 5 years now.  I am finally making pretty good money, but I have always worked around kids and had to take the first few years slowly.  I file jointly with my husband and even had him get more deductions taken out of his checks.  This year, after deductions, I was able to get an 1800.00 refund.  I consider this good considering I didn't pay anything all year (quarterly).  Here is my observation...it seems the the MT field is a ...

Future Of Transcription - An Observation
Jan 29, 2012

It is my opinion that transcription, whether it be standard or voice, will be replaced altogether in the very near future.  There may be some little independent offices or hospitals that continue, but not for long.  I say this for 2 reasons.  One is that the hospital I worked for locally started withe EHR about 5 years ago and the introduction of VR about 3 years ago with the push for the doctors to do their own "point & click" type of transcription.  The software made a ...

Friday Observation - Makes You Say Hmmmm
May 11, 2012

Maybe it's just me, maybe it's because it's Friday.  However, I am lucky enough to be filling in blanks on some standard reports with just left vs right.  My shortcuts are L for left and R for right.   Have you ever noticed that L is on your right hand and R is on your left?  For some strange reason, I'm having trouble getting that today!!  Maybe some wine after my shift will help me feel better. ...
