Wondering if anyone else has this observation... - wise1

Posted: Dec 29, 2009

Lately I have been setting a timer for an hour and have actually done this for a long time, just to see what I do in an hour... seems of late is getting harder to make more than 18.00 to 20.00 an hour... and I have 28 yrs experience... seems to me something has been set that makes it impossible to do any better, no matter the dictators, the difficulty of the dictation, etc, etc. etc...

Anyone else seem to think something is up?  Not mentioning company...

I do that periodically and - depending on what doctor I am trans-ing

[ In Reply To ..]
I can make up to $50 an hour with my whiz kid, or as little as $8 an hour on my one guy with a speech impediment who talks too fast and literally trips over his own tongue.

I am strictly IC for private practice, non-MTSO clients, and pay taxes and expenses myself. I really don't know how much it averages out to, factoring in that stuff.

"Not mentioning company" - makes me think you may indeed be referring to a specific company so maybe my situation is not of interest. But there you have it anyway.

I have done this for years and years - Thirty years and counting

[ In Reply To ..]
I do not have a timer but have a clock setting on my desk. I have timed myself on an hourly basis probably for the last probably 15 years, just comes second nature to me.

Me, too. I compared accounts, dictators, ESLs - and changes in MTSO software. sm

Although all play a part to some extent, lately the changes in the employer's transcription software have been slowing me down more and more. Takes longer to log on, downloads are slower, pulling up info (hospital MT lists, etc) is slower.

More of the good dictators are going offshore or to VR, leaving us with the crap. I'm willing to type the crap, mind you, but I think their compensation for typing harder work, which takes longer to do, and more time looking things up because they were unclear to begin with, just isn't realistic at all.

Then you gotta figure in all the nitpicking everyone's QA seems to be doing these days. They get all apoplectic over a hyphen or a comma, or a capitalization, that doesn't change the quality of the report one iota. And yet the company is sending 50% of its work to India. If it's really that crucial that every period and comma that THEY believe should be there, is there, and if missed TAT and blanks are so upsetting to them, then why don't they get a little more proactive about (a) Requiring a little more care at the client's end, which would save EVERYBODY time and money, and (b) insist that the client upgrade their voice-recording equipment?

The idiocy of this entire field never ceases to amaze me.

Not all places have QAs like where you work - Thirty years and counting

[ In Reply To ..]
I was working at a place and the QA thought they had to either email or IM you continually on every little thing. I left 1 day when the higher ups got their IMs going in the wrong direction with their talk being against me. I now work for a company I hardly ever hear a peep out of, very seldom an email and I do my work and that is it. No one has to breathe down your neck, or shouldn’t have to, in order for you to do your work. As far as looking things up, if I have a cc to a Dr. Grant and I have no first name, I can choose a nondoctor and just copy to the doctor at the top. It is up to the hospital to find out which doctor this goes to. I do not spend time looking this and that up. I have had maybe 2 patients this year that were not in the system and then I pend those to the company and they take care of it. This field can be a piece of cake if they would just leave us alone.

it is getting more difficult to make money - 35 years MTing

[ In Reply To ..]
but in my case, and with various companies, hospitals and offices over time, I believe that now VR is taking the easier dictators so there's no balance between diffi and smooth dictators, and we have many many more rules and account specifics to be mindful of, having to often jump from acct to acct and dealing with inconsistent work flow, which kills my momentum.

Just An Outside Observation
Oct 16, 2011

I have seen a couple of posts recently about people getting fired. While I am just baffled about them getting fired in the first place, it makes me really wonder when they say "but I put in extra hours, worked extra hard, had perfect work but I was fired. I don't get it? If you are as great as you say you are or as hardworking and accurate as you would like others to believe, how do you still manage to get fired? ...

Observation
Jan 05, 2013

I think the docs are catching on or something.  All day today, I have gotten nothing but stat dictations by docs I haven't done in WEEKS and these are docs who usually do not do stat dictations unless absolutely necessary.  I've also noticed that a lot of them are actually spelling out really simple medical terms or medicines which they have never done before.  I wonder!   ...

Just An Observation

and maybe it doesn't make sense, but if you bring a patient's ADT info in through ADT and it says whether the pt is M or F, you'd think the ASR could be programmed to read that particular gender and then use it throughout the report, whether the dictator said he/she or him/her.  I don't know...it was just something that crossed my mind while correcting the umpteenth ASR report with gender inconsistencies, when the dictator clearly stated the correct gender in the first p ...

My Observation About This Field...
Apr 26, 2011

I have been a working MT (IC status) for 5 years now.  I am finally making pretty good money, but I have always worked around kids and had to take the first few years slowly.  I file jointly with my husband and even had him get more deductions taken out of his checks.  This year, after deductions, I was able to get an 1800.00 refund.  I consider this good considering I didn't pay anything all year (quarterly).  Here is my observation...it seems the the MT field is a ...

Future Of Transcription - An Observation
Jan 29, 2012

It is my opinion that transcription, whether it be standard or voice, will be replaced altogether in the very near future.  There may be some little independent offices or hospitals that continue, but not for long.  I say this for 2 reasons.  One is that the hospital I worked for locally started withe EHR about 5 years ago and the introduction of VR about 3 years ago with the push for the doctors to do their own "point & click" type of transcription.  The software made a ...

Friday Observation - Makes You Say Hmmmm
May 11, 2012

Maybe it's just me, maybe it's because it's Friday.  However, I am lucky enough to be filling in blanks on some standard reports with just left vs right.  My shortcuts are L for left and R for right.   Have you ever noticed that L is on your right hand and R is on your left?  For some strange reason, I'm having trouble getting that today!!  Maybe some wine after my shift will help me feel better. ...

Wondering About Pay
Dec 14, 2009

I work as an MT in a very rural area, so the pay is VERY good for me.  We are a one income household since my husband got laid off and I easily pay the mortgage, car payments, all of the bills, etc.  I was wondering, if a person lives in a much more expensive area, like California where a person's mortgage would easily be four times mine, do they get more money per line to compensate for that, or is it the same? ...

gotten their pay docked 3 cents a line for critical errors, over 5% QA submission, etc.  I haven't heard anyone actually say that happened to them.  Is it just a threat ?  I know they would LIKE to dock our pay.    The reason I ask is that I've been having a bad past few weeks.....extra difficult/bad sound quality reports plus stress along with that has caused me to have to sent more than 5% to QA plus I make two what they call critical errors (I saw them as ...

I Was Wondering About Something.
Jan 25, 2012

As an in-house MT we were required to wear business casual clothing.  Another job required scrubs.  Now that I work from home, I wear pJs, sweats, jeans, shorts, whatever.   I noticed that when I am "dressed" (not in pj's or sweats) that I seem to be more productive and I was wondering if others have noticed the same thing.  Sometimes I wonder if the way we dress to transcribe affects our productivity as a professional employee.  You know when you dress up to go ou ...

Who are they going to blame once they switch over to the EMR and there are a million mistakes on the chart?  They won't have the MTs to blame any more, so I wonder, who will it be???  Maybe the "scribe" or the med student who has to follow the docs around because they will be too lazy to type a few things into the computer?  Just wondering----. ...

Wondering About Something, With So Many Of Us
May 28, 2013

I wonder that most of us seem to be in the mid-40s and even later 50s or 60s that are sick of the MT garbage and want to get out by going back to school. Has anyone considered the fact of how old you/we will be when we graduate a program? Even a 1-year program likely will take 2 years to go through if somone has to work full-time to support themselves, even with loans to pay for school. What about the age discrimination I hear so much of and definitely see it in the real world? Does ...

Wondering
Mar 05, 2015

Okay, I have to wonder if it costs so much to train an MT for a company that they would not work with their MTs to keep them happy in the work types and specialties they do. Most times instead if you are not happy with your accounts, they just fire you. Doesn't anyone work with anyone so it benefits the MT and the company both? I find it so maddening that someone just hired can do this without even discussing it with the MT at all. Just fire them because they wanted to try another sp ...
