i am considering a career as a medical transcriptionist and would like to contact someone in the fiield. Is this a good field.  Are jobs available.   What can I epect to earn?

About this field - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Unfortunately it is no longer a viable field. The cost of a good education would be much more than you would earn to make it worthwhile. Jobs are very scarce, especially for newbies. There are medical transcriptionists out there with 20 to 30+ years of experience looking for work, employers very rarely hire someone with little or no actual work experience when they can hire someone with 20 or more years in the field. Your earnings would be around minimum wage, so do not listen to the schools when they list higher earning potential, that information is old. Technology is fast replacing medical transcriptionists, and off shoring has taken most of what is left. Snow Bunny is correct, it may not be what you were hoping to hear, but it is true nonetheless.

We are not supposed to correct grammar/punctuation on this board, that said, it is a very large part of what we do in this job. It is always there with us, we find errors in advertisements, emails, signs, it is ingrained in us. I realize boards such as this, as well as emails are to be considered casual when it comes to sentence structure, punctuation, etcetera. What many fail to realize, especially on a board like this, is that there are potential employers out there reading these posts. No matter what media you are using, it is always a good idea to represent yourself with good basic skills, especially when it is such an important part of this business.

I would recommend you select a different career, something with a long-term future. I wish you the best of luck.

Medical transcription was once a good field to get into and MTs were clamored over for their skills. Now, that is not true. This field is fast dying. You used to be able to make a good living in this field, now you are lucky to make minimum wage. The education you need to have would cost you more than you would earn...in other words, its not worth the investment. I have been doing this for 8 years now and I went to school for it, but now I am BACK in school learning another career in the IT business. I question the medical field anymore since it seems like the only people that win there are the doctors.

My advice to you is to consider another field. There is a lot to consider when choosing a career and I wish you a lot of luck, but save yourself the aggravation and disappointment. Good luck to you in your endeavors.

The most important thing to learn before you - become an MT is how to live on poverty wages.

[ In Reply To ..]
You will also want to concurrently learn a different skill, because MT will likely only exist another couple years, max. It's a dead-end, abusive, low-paying field that was in its glory in the 1980s, but that now I wouldn't recommend to even my worst enemy.

Yes, I agree. The last 3 years or so have been a definite struggle for me, losing a good paying job to VR, then getting a job with another company only for much of its work going to VR or EMR. My pay is probably half of what it used to be and I am just totally wore out from the struggle. Still here, but not happy and trying to figure out what to do. And the treatment is just not good at all anymore, just the day to day treatment, pickiness of QA. You're just considered to be like a machine and they have no feelings for you.

Like the others, I am experienced transcriptionist, and I also say, "Don't do it." Technology has put me out of 3 separate transcription jobs, and Nuance just came in and took over a 4th, so I am leaving the transcription industry after 15 years. If you want to work in the medical field, there are so many other options available, and I would advise you to consider those.

Don't go into MT if you want a career. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
This is not a long-term career. I just lost my job without notice to EMR. I was out of work for 4 days wondering where the work went and then got an email that my account no longer needed MTs. The job hunt is difficult as the jobs available now all pay 1-2 cpl less than what I was making, which had already been a pay cut from a prior job. Our pay just keeps going down on the few jobs still available while the companies are demanding more such as stricter schedules, increased line requirements, etc. If you want a career, I would look elsewhere.

So did they lay you off - or were you IC?

[ In Reply To ..]
Sounds pretty bad to not even let you know and then send you an email 4 days later. I hope they at least had the decency (if you were an employee) to lay you off so you could claim UI.

No, was an IC. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I was an IC. Even so, they could have had the decency to give us notice. The account manager knew this was coming down the pipeline at least a month before, maybe sooner, and didn't bother to even give us a heads up. Even when the work dried up, for the first few days we were told the docs just went on vacation and it would pick back up soon. Have been told they have more accounts coming soon, but I have been hearing that since I started with them nearly 10 years ago. I can't afford to wait around hoping they pick up a new account that will support all the MTs that are now without a job.

Thank you all for being honest with me   I deeply appreciate your advice and am taking  it. I see that MT is not for me.  I will , however work on my grammer and punctuation.

Good for you for heeding our warnings!! I had a - sm

person who was constantly asking me about becoming an MT. I believe she purposely misunderstood when I told her I had made $30 the WEEK before. She said it was more than she made. I said if she had a job even just part time I doubted it. She continually chose to ignore my warnings so I just stopped chatting with her. If she wants to hang herself, it will not be with any help from me.

Don't you wonder why when you were in school you were told about how many jobs there were out there, how your income was endless and depended on how much work you wanted to do? I do have a job, not one that I can live off of, I earn about $200 every other week, but still, at least I have a job. I look at the job board and see how many people have viewed each job and wonder...at least it is just not me, where is the work? I wish that when I was researching school and such that they woul ...

Been out there a long time.  People are either cut-throat, manipulative and shmooze, or your best friend to your face, yet clickish and cruel.   (and I SO missed high school) Since when is all of that necessary?  Want something?  ASK ME DIRECT and if I cannot help you - STOP THERE.   Something I said in confidence rub you wrong?  TALK TO ME ABOUT IT.  ESPECIALLY WHEN I SENSE IT AND FLAT OUT ASK.  I'm so tired of the games p ...

To Those Leaving The MT Field
Mar 01, 2010

How long do you think MT'ing will be around?   I'm going back to school to become a social worker, something i've always wanted to do, and need the income while i'm in school.  In fact, today was my first day.  Its an online course and it will take some adjusting, but I feel its time.  I'm following a dream, MT'ing was supposed to be temporary but it is such a cushy job, who would want to leave it?   I think the problem is, there ...

Learning A New Field
Mar 03, 2010

What would be the best way to get into another field? I have been doing neurology now for about 6 years and I am very interested in getting into something else, and really this is the only field I know because I havent had practice with anything else.  Im just getting kind of bored with the neurology lingo.  If I were to apply for a job that is hiring in a different field, would they consider me a "newby"? Has anyone ever been hired for a field they have no ex ...

How Many Of You Really Left The Field
Mar 03, 2010

I'm just curious is all.  I've been reading for months a lot of posts of people who are unhappy, their going to leave, telll their bosses off, they deserve more, etc, etc.  It's literally been going on months.  I have a job I like, it pays lower than all the people here say they get paid, but I like it.  There are times we run out of work, but I make due (and I'm a one income family, so is distressing sometimes), but  I like my doctors and my supervis ...

What Attracted You To The MT Field?
Mar 07, 2010

I didn't know what I wanted to do.  I was very independent and a home body.  I'm also very disciplined and prefer to work alone.  When I made more than my friends with degrees, I stayed...I feel like a criminal for how much I got paid for how little I do.  Easy money, ability to stay home, no managers lurking over shoulder.  We are the last man on the totem pole here in the medical "profession" and we are getting cut out.  It was too good to last forever. ...

Mar 26, 2010

You know the MT field is bad when even the fly-by-night "work-at-home" make $20 an hour companies don't even advertise for MT anymore.  My husband has been job hunting and we've been checking the online job search engines daily.  I haven't seen one single ad like we used to see on the matchbook covers.  Now they have a different scheme.  It's all work at home in call centers and make $20 an hour.      ...

I Just Have To Say This About This Field Of Work
Oct 15, 2010

I am going to be anonny as I do not want people to know who I am and call me lazy or whatever they decide to call me.  I lost a job not long ago, found another one for peanuts, but am going to turn them down as I can get more unemployment.  Plus with unemployment, I know how much I can count on each week.  It is steady.  I know it will not last forever, but....  I am just tired of the stress and worry of is there going to be any work.  At least now I know how much I ...

What Happened To Our Field?
Mar 23, 2011

Why can't it just go back to the way it was? Those of us who have been transcribing for 20+ years are kind of hurting now, or anyway I am. I used to have a service, had no middle men, no corporate people to support. This was back in the 80's, and the only limitations I had were demographics. If I took work too far away, I had to have more and more delivery people, but at that time, there were only a hand full of transcriptionists.  Those were the days of "a line is a line", "pica ...

My Observation About This Field...
Apr 26, 2011

I have been a working MT (IC status) for 5 years now.  I am finally making pretty good money, but I have always worked around kids and had to take the first few years slowly.  I file jointly with my husband and even had him get more deductions taken out of his checks.  This year, after deductions, I was able to get an 1800.00 refund.  I consider this good considering I didn't pay anything all year (quarterly).  Here is my observation...it seems the the MT field is a ...

I hope you'll watch this video about photojournalists.  It's very interesting all on its own, but particularly how the major news agencies are refusing to pay for professional quality and using free amateur photos instead. In particular, I would like you to observe what the expert Ed Greenberg says about how photojournalists are viewed by the news agencies - as "passive and childlike".  People who are too timid to protest the way they are being treated.  People ...

When Looking For A Non-MT Job In Medical Field
Dec 29, 2012

Do you use the title of MLS instead of MT? Is that the more appropriate title we have now according to AHDI? Do recruiters or office personnel know what an MLS is or what we do? Maybe I should just stick with MT. What do you put on your resume? Thanks. ...
