Well, I know transcription is going away but what I plan to do is - PAMT

Posted: Jan 06, 2013

just continue to take what I can get until there is nothing left.  If it means working here and there I guess that is what I will do.  As far as coding, MModal is advertising everywhere for coding people and I can assure you they are training coders and that work will be heading overseas as well so why bother.  They will keep the rates low and there wont be any money in that either.  I guess the only way to even try to survive in transcription is take what you can get unless it is ridiculous and try to make a living doing it.  I am at an age that for me doing something else is not going to happen.  I expect at some point with people not coming into MT and so many people not able to survive doing this and training for other types of work there will be some few scraps left but then maybe not.  Who knows.  The work going overseas is the big worry but I wonder how EMR will affect that also.

Well, I've got an interview at a hospital... - anon4

to work in food service and am hoping to get hired. I know the money won't be near as good but I'm just plain scared, but this could work out fine for me, as the hospital is close by and I want second shift, which is probably why they finally called me. Then at least there would be benefits. Over the past couple years, I've applied for several jobs there with never an interview - part-time radiology transcriber, office worker, receptionist. I always thought my resume looked fine. Like you, not keen on going back to school at my age.

hospital food service - isolated and bored

You know, you might come out better financially than you expect, plus it seems to me that it might be kind of a fun job, lots of interaction, physically a little demanding perhaps but not mentally exhausting. You would see lots and lots of people and get to know some of them. I'm a little envious.

That's how I'm trying to see it... - anon4

and hoping the interview will go well, kinda sounds like a "cattle call." The recruiter mentioned there would be 3-4 "hiring leaders" there to quiz me. Not much to quiz me on, my last experience anywhere near this type work was in high school. So today I'll be drilling myself on any possible questions they might come up with and hope I might be what they're looking for. Most people don't want to work second shift. And yeah, being around more people part would be a good thing, I do know what you mean about boredom and isolation. Plus maybe I'll drop a few pounds.

I'd sure like to know what this country plans on doing - with all the seniors who need to keep - sm

working, but can't get hired anywhere.

I just talked to a friend the other day - who went into coding.

[ In Reply To ..]
took course through community college, got certified, etc. After much networking, he finally got a job paying a whopping 15 bucks an hour and drives about 20 miles a day during peak traffic times to a remote office where the billing and coding is done for a major hospital. He is a cubicle drone and it sounded horrible. He works for a hospital, so maybe has fabulous benefits, but when I heard 15 an hour I thought I'm just better off riding this mule until it dies or I die.

That is exactly what is going to happen with coding. You are - PAMT

[ In Reply To ..]
going to have everyone heading into coding and every MT school teaching coding and then factor in MModal and India, etc doing it for far less than $15 an hour and forget it. I dont know how long it takes and how much it costs but no way would I get into anything that can be sent overseas in medicine because Modal will be right on top of it.

Coding - Been there done that

[ In Reply To ..]
I can't speak to the issues with M-Modal but you are jumping to conclusions in regard to the availability of job opportunities in the coding world. Your friend may start out working in a cubicle for $15 an hour but once he (I think you said he) gains some experience he can move into other jobs with more responsibility and better pay. Coding is a desk job, sitting at a computer, and it requires a lot of concentration, so being in a cubicle all day makes sense, I'm not sure what you were expecting, but it can be tedious at times. What I found was that it was difficult to get hired as a coder without experience but there seem to be available jobs for qualified people. However, I would suggest doing your own investigating and don't base your opinion on one person's word of mouth. M-Modal does not control the world, you need to get out of the house more often.
They may not control the world but they most assuredly put the kapop to the - PAMT

transcription business without a doubt. I worked for them 17 years ago and they were offshoring then and it just proliferated into what it is now with all others following suit to save their businesses. The same goes for ASR. Why would it be any different with coding.
Why would you assume it is the SAME for coding? - ???
[ In Reply To ..]
Why would you think yourself qualified to make judgements like that and offer them as advice to others when you know absolutely nothing about coding or the career field that surrounds it?

We have explained why coding is not like MT already. I am not doing it again.

The other poster was right . . . you need to get out of the house. You are seeing a very limited part of the world and thinking it is everything.

There is a huge world out there and MM is virtually unheard of in most of it. They do not control everything in HIM.
The suits likely think it's similar to transcription. And - hospitals are becoming some of - (sm)

the cheapest-paying employers out there. Full-time benefitted jobs with them are becoming extremely difficult to find. Coding is done on a computer. As the poster above said, it can be done off-site. And as she also said, M*Modal and other unscrupulous clerical "service" organizations are already getting their grimy hands on coding, just like they did with MT and general transcription. So for all those reasons, I think yes - the opportunity to pay less for coding by getting it moved off-site and eventually offshore means the pay will start dropping there, too. M*Modal wouldn't be interested in it at all if they didn't think they could make a financial killing by taking advantage of coders, just like they're doing with MTs currently. I think the writing is very plainly on the wall.
You thinking it does not make it so. - SM
[ In Reply To ..]
The fact that YOU imagine something does not mean it is reality.

Coding is nothing like MT. You cannot see that because you know nothing about it. In your mind, you THINK you see typing and copying numbers and computers and clerical work, so you assume that you know exactly what coding is. But, you are wrong.

If you think coding is a bad choice for you, you are correct. Coding is not a good choice for negative people or those who jump to conclusions or are illogical. You would hate it.

And you do better than that? - Wondering why you are complaining

[ In Reply To ..]
He is making $31,200 with benefits. The value of the benefits will be between $7,800 and $10,920. For an entry-level job that isn't bad at all. His facility will have higher pay tiers into which he can move. He can start thinking of moving up into compliance, documentation improvement, and auditing, as well as management. His facility may pay for continuing education, including work toward an RHIA. When he gets some experience, he can get a job somewhere else, start consulting on his own, or work part time for a company like Maxim or K-Force.

As for being a cubicle drone, his employer is likely to let him work from home at some point. Meanwhile, he has the benefit of assistance from coworkers.

If you have it that good, why are you hanging around here moaning and griping that you have no work and no money?

It sounds as though you have a very bad case of seeing everything through negativity glasses.

Thanks for that - anon3

[ In Reply To ..]
I am about to embark on a similar career path and am glad to read such encouraging advice. Helping me to see things in a positive light, even if others cannot see past the drone job in a cubicle. Coding is not a dead-end job and don't know why others can't see that. For me anyway, it's the only way I can figure with a future. There is certainly no future in MT anymore. Thanks again.

Why not learn how to code and maybe you would be able to do MT and coding? Maybe you could get a job as an MT QA person. Our jobs have changed but there are still ways to use our skills.

I keep trying to get out, but no luck so far. I had a job - interview at a small clinic, but - sm

got totally spanked on the skills assessment test. The ad was for a medical transcriptionist, but I think what they really needed was a graphic artist or an administrative assistant, and I'm neither of those things -- I'm an MT.

I just tested and am waiting for an interview for a medical secretary - position. It uses MT skills and some others. sm

It is right up our alley. Its a job that will never be outsourced. It pays as well as MT used to. One does use their MT skills (especially in a path dept). We are well-suited to this kind of work.

With New Plan STM Stated 35% Of Our Team Would C Increase With New Comp Plan

This means 65% will see decrease and/or paid minimum wage. They are touting this as the great new comp  (local Burger King is advertising job for $10/hour).  Anyone find out if the QC percentage is just for blanks or include all sent to QA including Audio issues, etc, and will EQA be included.  Also, trying to figure out our pay from week to week is going to be a pain.  I am going to see how this new comp plan works out, but since the conference call, I'm not feeling pos ...

Anyone Here Have UHC HRA Plan?
Oct 01, 2012

I'm just curious as to how it works, as I may have to sign up for it at the end of the year.  How does the HRA account work and how do you get access to the funds when you need them?  I think I understand everything beyond that.  Just curious how the account is set up and how to get access to it.  ...

This Is My Plan-
Aug 28, 2013

I will check for work during my schedule. Work it if possible, if not, just use the no wrk excused absence comment. I am not going to work around the clock to try and make it up. Ridiculous. If you want to, that is okay, but seems crazy to ask people to do this.  Why don't the supervisors/TSMs have a call about this. We get an email, but never anyone to tell us directly about a change. I just cannot believe that they expect employees to try and make up the time. ...

New Pay Plan...cant We....sm
Oct 15, 2014

Cant we all write the guys who are on the e-mail we all got if in fact this turns out to be something bad? Flood their emails and desks? Ya know its too bad we cant get together 500+ MLS and go on strike... I would do it. If a ton of us went on strike and demanded fair wages and changes, with noone typing their reports for 48+ hours I think they'd listen. It kind of sounds like the pay will be the same even if they lower the base..... b/c if they lower the base rate but you get a tad extra ...

New Pay Plan...? Sm
Nov 30, 2014

Sounds like they are taking out the LPH requirements? Or am I the only 1 thinking this? Sounds like they take out the requirement for LPH. Now your lines may drop due to focusing more on QA/blanks/rereading,etc.  Normally that would lower your lines and lower your pay. Now it will lower your lines BUT you will send less to Q and have less mistakes so your pay will ultimately stay the same. This is how I am taking all of this. The only thing I am not getting is if we are going to have a base ...

Even Though I Will Do Well With This New Pay Plan,
Dec 13, 2014

The abuse and the stress have gone beyond the pale. The people who put together this pay plan have no idea what it is like to work in the trenches. We have taken pride in our work and have loved the field of medical transcription, but they have made us hate it. They have caused us to make more mistakes. We are not focused on what we are doing at any given moment; we are focused on our overall scores and thinking about how we're going to make enough money to buy winter boots for our children ...

New Changes In Pay Plan
Feb 09, 2015

Did anybody get the email about the changes they are making.  We have longer time to request a reversal (big deal - they never approve them so really????) and now they can QA us for our 2 weeks rather than our 1 weeks which in my  opininon just gives them more time to pick apart which ones they want to check and find their errors to total up!!!  That is great idea. ...

New PTO Plan

I hope someone can help me.  I know I need to back up my files (especially my work files, SH, etc.)  I see ads on TV about back up options, I have heard of other ways to do this as well, like an external drive.  My dilemma is that I don't know which is the best way to do this.  I have a Dell computer and every so often a box comes up and says backup not done.  I never click on it.  Does this mean I should have make a disk with everyone on it that I wa ...

PTO With Pay Plan Question
Dec 30, 2010

Does anyone know if the PTO we see as of today in teamwork is the correct remaining PTO for the rest of the year?  I was not sure if the pto we used previously in the period ending 12/26 is reflected in the current PTO in teamwork yet.   This is confusing me since we will get a 12/31 paycheck.  I know pto will not accumulate until next year but it looks like to me I did not lose any PTO even since taking a few hours ending the 26th.  any clues out there?  ...

Since 2012, when Nuance "officially" took over the company I was with, they following has been very consistent. 1) Cut pay, then offer some type of carrot (incentive, bonus) to help us "make up" the loss in line rate. QA us to death for any little error, calll it a major error or a critical error to lower our quality score so that we cannot make 'incentive' or 'bonus.' If we do re-read the reports in order to bring quality scores up, our lines go down, and then it is a sum z ...

All This Speculation About The New Pay Plan Is Not Doing
