Throwing my hands up...well almost - Ugh

Posted: Aug 11, 2011

I have been job hunting since May of this year.  I don't have acute care experience, lots of Radiology and clinic experience.  (11 years).  I have passed tests, I have sent out resumes, I have tried job boards, etc.  I either a) Never hear anything; 2)  Been told, hey you passed with flying colors but we already picked our applicants; 3) Been told they needed me, then did a 180 and said no they didn't but will hold my resume; and 4) Been told my system is too updated to use their platform (I bought a new laptop feeling good about it until I found out no one is using Windows 7 and Word 2010 (or can use Virtual XP)...has to be XP and Word 2003.  My job goes to EMR in 5 weeks.  I started looking as soon as I found that out in May.  I am debating going back to one of the big MTSOs I worked at before even with lack of work just to have a job (although I was trying to stay away from ones that off-shored) just to have SOME work.

Anyone else having a hell of a time?  I feel like I have this huge X on me because I was lucky to get a new laptop and unlucky to have experience in the wrong areas I guess.  :(

Thanks for listening.  My current job has docs on vacation so my work is slow here too.

I'm in the same boat with the exception that I DON'T have a computer that is compatible (too old). I don't have the money to buy another one, new or used, so am stuck with applying only where the equipment is provided. Over 30 years acute care, radiology, pathology, psychology, clinic experience, passed all tests with flying colors, and am a CMT. One MTSO had 4 openings for different shifts, but they weren't available once I completed the testing. They, too, are holding my application. That was in June; nothing else from them so far. Another very large MTSO (who recently acquired my old employer) had 6 jobs for different shifts/days of week, but they, too, were gone by the time my testing was completed. The other MTSOs haven't bothered to respond at all. I'm beginning to wonder if these job opening notices are so that "they" can beef up their applicant pools for the future only. One MTSO even had a big ad about recently acquiring a huge account in Arizona, but nothing has materialized from them so far. Go figure. Good luck to you and me. I'm off to the food bank this afternoon. Don't know what will happen when the first rolls around and I can't pay the rent.

I too feel this way. I work for Etransplus.com now, and I bought a brand new laptop for this job. It IS compatible with Windows 7 so maybe try there? At least you will have a job (though I have to say am making way less than I was for 13 years at my last hospital job!)...in this terrible economy I guess I must feel somewhat fortunate to have anything at all. Good luck!

Thank you - I really appreciate it

You are right. Thanks for the help. :)

You're welcome. Wish you the best. It has been extremely devastating to be in this situation for me as well and so many other MTs. Good luck!

You might try Amphion. I know they were hiring last I checked, and they are compatible with Windows 7, and they may be willing to give you a shot if you pass the test. Without acute care experience, you may have to accept a lower line rate, as you would not be considered a level III MT, which is the highest tier, without the basic-4, acute care experience, but it might be worth trying. you can feel free to contact me off list if you would like, and I could tell you who to contact.

I sent you an email - I will try that too...

Thank you also!!! I am not opposed to learning acute care...a lower line rate isn't the best but its experience.

I had just bought a new laptop, too. The companythat offered me a position had several platforms, but only a small percentage was compatible with Windows 7. ALL of their accounts were compatible with XP.

I went to www.TigerDirect.com and looked at their refurbished computers/towers. I found an excellent computer (just the tower) for less than $200. It has worked perfectly.

I know with today's economy $200 might as well be $2000 to some. If by chance you can afford to do this, it will open up MANY DOORS for you. Good Luck!

I jut did a 90-day paid internship with Superior Global. They are now offering me a job and are planning on doing another round of paid internships.

It's something at least.
Paid internship - Where did you see this at?

Can you send me an email about this? How do you get started? The only thing I saw on a job site was a regular job where you had to have one year acute care (which I do not have). Thanks.

Boy, I could have written this beginning post except that I hadn't bought a laptop! After 9 1/2 years, my clinic company laid off its entire department, and I've been looking ever since. Have had the same experiences with companies agreeing to meet or set-up an interview and then totally do an about-face. My acute care experience is 12 years old so, like you, no one will give me the time of day. I've been in the business for 25 years, too, and I've done just about everything, save send a copy of me tap-dancing atop my keyboard with my toes transcribing 300 lines an hour to try and obtain a job.

Amphion's testing is rigorous, and I had to use the F keys for the test, which slowed me down considerably. They sent me a very nice rejection e-mail, but I wrote back and explained that my foot pedal was off for repairs and that it was a shame that I was probably penalized for technical reasons since we all know that once hired, those kinds of problems wouldn't be an issue. I guess one of the other posters knows someone there which, of course, is priceless.

I was really convinced that I would be contacted about the last job I applied for. It was exactly the specialty I had been doing for the past 9 1/2 years, M-F, and an above-average line rate, but not a word.. not even a rejection!

It is really discouraging.

Just wanted you to know that you certainly are not alone! :)

Wish I'd read a little further down before I posted "Guess I'll stick with corporate." Sorry. I know exactly how you feel. I had 7 years of clinic work when one of the doctors died and the practice split up. There aren't that many MTs where I live to begin with and a lot of them must be 100 years old by now. They just don't quit their jobs. I've been trying to find work with a company for at least two years and have run into the exact same problems you have. I'm beginning to wonder if these jobs even exist. I've worked full time in the nursing department at a state university for the past (almost) three years but never stopped looking for MT work. It's just always a run-around of some kind.

I refuse to test any more!!  I am sick of being directed to the mttest site only to have 4 or more reports waiting to be done that are 5-8 minutes long each!!  Seriously, if they want to see my skills, just let me try and work for them for a while.   I just refuse to test any more.  It is ridiculous considering what they want to pay anyway.  Sigh.  Done venting! ...

It is so frustrating to be working when only a few others are working and having the job#'s progressively increase, but then have a really horrible dictator's file come in that was hundreds of jobs before the rest in your box!  In other words, being thrown back. Hands-On
Feb 07, 2011

I have worked for Hands-On for a few years now and I think it is a well run company. I recently had surgery for breast cancer, and the owner and manager were very compassionate and concerned for my well being. They are always available to help if I have a question. It is one of the best jobs I have had. You have to work hard, but after all it is a job and if you follow the "rules and regulations" regarding quality of work and turn around time you will get along just fine. You also transcrib ...

Paresthesia In Both Hands
Oct 21, 2009

Date: 10.21.09 I am 44 and a medical transcriptionist. I started working as an MT at age 35 and since then has been doing this job. For the last one year I have been experiencing numbness and paresthesias in both hands and lots of trouble with neck stiffness and fasciculations in both shoulders. I type for 8-1/2 hours from Tuesday to Saturday. I have concluded from this that onset of carpal tunnel starts when a person(male or female) is 40 or above 40 years of age.   ...

I found some old posts in the Archives but was wondering if anyone had any recent experience with this company. Their website is a one-pager with not a whole lot of information but looks legit enough. Any information or input on either question is appreciated. Thanks! ...

Fat Loss In Hands
May 18, 2013

Hello, this may be an unusual question, but I have been transcribing for about 3 months now, after completing 12 months at Career Step. I've been noticing over the last week that my hands are looking almost like skeleton hands. It's like the fat is disappearing and the bones are becoming more prominent. Also, the veins in my hands are becoming very, very vascular. They are about the diameter of a drinking straw. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this common with excessive typing? I ...
