Quit or wait to be fired -- need advice - cantakeit

Posted: May 07, 2014

Well, like a lot of you out there I am struggling with VR and editing.  I have worked at the same hospital for many years, I have tried to get into another position, does not look like that will happen.  It is just a matter of time before they let me go.  Do I wait and be fired and collect unemployment and then have to explain to prospective employers (outside of the MT field!!!) that I was fired and why OR do I quit with some dignity still intact??  My husband works, it will be difficult but we will survive.  Any thoughs would be helpful.

especially on this forum - LOL.

Keep working with them and if they fire - here is my advice

you, collect your UE. Then you can look for another job if you want or take the time to learn something new since you are struggling with VR (like a lot of MTs). Let them worry about THEIR dignity since you did the best you could for many years with them.

If you do get fired, you will be asked by UE to explain - your side of it. Do that. SM

and do it well. Keep records of your line counts and quality scores, if that means anything where you are. Write a brief, but honest explanation of your side of the story.

I did that, and I was awarded UE because there was no proof of misdeed on my part. I dont know what my previous employer's story was, but my determination letter definitely said no proof of misdeed or wrongdoing on my part.

I cant stress to any of you enough - KEEP RECORDS, DOCUMENT THINGS, EVEN SCREEN SHOTS OF WHATEVER IS ON YOUR SCREEN - USE A PHONE CAMERA IF YOU HAVE TO - BUT GET PICTURES FOR PROOF.

This could be the difference at some point between getting UE or not.

Dignity, shmignity. - No advice here

I've been fired from all my prior MT jobs. Now I'm eligible for retirement, but I'm still going to make them fire me.

You sound proud of being fired from all your prior MT jobs. When did being fired from a job become something to be proud of??? Wow...

For the OP, I don't think being fired is ever a good thing. Having to explain being fired to future employers could be problematic. If you are hoping to move out of MT it might not be such an issue though.

Why do you think it's just a matter of time before you get fired? Are you on some sort of performance management or is this just a gut feeling? If it's just a gut feeling I would probably keep busting my butt looking for other work. If you are on performance management and things aren't getting better you may want to part ways before getting fired.

getting fired only matters when you are young - but with it if you are ready to retire!

take the UE then your SS, you have worked a lifetime and you deserve it, especially the way this profession has treated us.
That's precisely what I'll likely do, since I - cant find a job since getting laid off.

UE will run out before I'm old enough to get full benefits, but I think I can squeak by for one more year.

who needs to be on performance management.

Not proud to be fired, but I always bounced back. Prospective employers NEVER asked me whether I was fired, currently employed, or quit voluntarily.

I would stick it out until you get fired. That is not fair of them.

It is a performance evaluation thing going on. I cannot meet the line counts with the expected accuracy all the time. I called my HR department and when a perspective employer calls to verify past employment all the HR department can give them is the dates the employee worked. They absolutely cannot say anything about be fired or performance. I am going to stick it out until the then or until I find a new job, which ever comes first.

I Can't Wait Any Longer!!!
Apr 19, 2010

Okay! I've had enough.  I was going to hang in longer but I am now being Aggressive and sending my resume out!  I won't be doing MT work anymore -- that's for sure!  Perhaps working at the local community college if not for the government.  At this point, I don't really care what I do because anything is better than this!  WooHoo!  It's a AHAA movement for me.  It won't be long now.  Best of luck to those who chose to stay wit ...

How Long Do You Wait?
Jul 27, 2011

How long do you wait after you apply and test before you email and/or contact the recruiter?  The way I see it, I have spent at least a couple of hours on their tests and at the very least deserve an email within a few days either way.  Maybe times have changed. Or maybe I should cc the HR dept asking for an update on my application status? ...

A Revelation While We Wait.
Nov 12, 2014

While watching the news earlier I heard that scientists have made an important discovery.  It seems they have discovered a "Stupidity Virus."  I know!  It explains quite a bit doesn't it?  This must have been floating around in the water coolers at corporate for a very long, long, long, long time!  Not to mention certain other water coolers (just off the top of my head, say maybe at client sites).   Now we know where those people come from and what happene ...

Wait On ICD-10 Before Enrolling In School?
Dec 28, 2011

Am a current Mt looking to get into coding, specifically looking at Andrews.  I am not familiar with coding at all, so this may be a dumb question to those familiar with it - but here goes! Would it make more sense to wait until the implementation of ICD-10 to invest in the courses or is this a mute point pretty much?  In other words, would it be easier to "transition" from 9 to 10 or start fresh with 10?  Hope this makes sense and TIA for any input.   ...

How Long To Wait For Work
Jul 17, 2012

When you are logged in and you have NJA, how long is a reasonable amount of time to stay logged in to wait for work to meet your quota?
