Orthopedics job - Railey

Posted: Mar 18, 2011

I've been offered part-time transcription at home, working for one orthopedic surgeon.  I've got over 12 years experience in many specialties, but have never done orthopedics.  The interview is next week.

Any advice on how best I could prepare to work in this specialty for the first time?  It sounds like a great opportunity, but at the beginning a lot of the terminology would be very difficult for me.  I won't have a QA person monitoring my work, so I'm a little nervous about being on my own with this.

I'd feel much more confident going into the interview knowing that I could actually do this job.

The most basic reference book would be the - sm

Stedman's Orthopaedic & Rehab Words book. I love anything Stedman's and have just about all of their books, one edition or the other. Another thing would be to see if they would provide you samples of the doctor's dictation, or maybe if someone in teh office would be willing to help you with problems in the beginning. Knowing your anatomy would be extremely helpful also. The Stedman's book does have appendices at the back of the anatomy, muscles, ligaments, tendons, etc. That would be my suggestion.

I no longer use the Stedman's books but have found the Stedman's CDs are much faster to use than books. You don't even have to take your fingers off the keyboard to use them and it is much faster than a book. They are totally awesome!

I have found Stedman's word books to be very helpful. I would definitely get some kind of reference book for the specialty if I were you whether it be Stedmans or some other brand.

I would make sure the new employer is okay with the fact that there will be a learning curve for you and how they want you to handle any questions. Better to find out now before you start working for them if they really want someone who can just hit the ground and run with their work or open to a learning curve.

You can ask the new employer to provide samples of each docs work to better serve them. I don't think this is an unusual request. I think I would not want to work for someone who would not be willing to do this but that is your choice.

Since the doc is a surgeon you might find the work to be a limited number of procedures and/or very repetitive which will help.

It is just one specialty you will be learning and if you apply yourself you will probably able to master it. Just be glad it is not hospital medical records job where you could be getting all different docs and all different specialties and types of reports! You just need to be patient with yourself and be willing to take the extra time to look things up. May be tedious, I know, but worth it in the long run to have a job and you will have another specialty to add to your resume. You can probably do this you just need to be patient and willing to put in the time. It will get easier in time. Believe me, I have been there and wanted to give up but persevered and it all worked out!

There might be brand names of products mentioned in the dictation and I have found the reference books helpful and also sometimes if new equipment not yet in book you can type what it sounds like on the internet and find the probable answer with that company's website.

Do you have any transcriptionist friends who work in that specialty who would be willing to provide some sample reports for you?

You might even be able to find sample reports on the internet but you must be careful because you really don't know the quality of that work. I once took a job a years ago with a doc who does acupuncture and there were not any reference books available that I could find. I found a great deal of info/terminology on the internet. In addition to a few sample reports I was able to do the work.

Good luck and keep us posted!

I would also get a Stedman's Surgery word book since the doc is a surgeon.

I have worked as an MT for a general surgeon here in my hometown; having had no prior experience with surgical terms etc. i just type what I can and leave what I do not understand as a blank. When I interviewed for the job, because I did not know a lot of surgical words etc he agreed to spell them out for me so I can understand them better.

Been doing ortho for 15+ years - orthogirl

When I started I had the Stedeman's ortho and rehab word book. I have also found the radiology words and lab words helpful. Unless you will be typing the actually op reports, I would not bother with the surgery word book. I type for an ortho office and always have. Their office notes are more the clinical exams and the operations they do are usually dictated at the hospital. Some doctors will dictate a short op note for the office chart that usually consistists of the name of the procedure they did and what postop protocol they want for that patient. You will find that if you are typing for one ortho surgeon, that doc will probably specialize in a certain body part, like the doc I do is a knee and hip surgeon. He does some other exams, but the majority of them are knees and hips. Also, between the two offices I have typed for over the past 15 or more years, these doctors are very repetative, so asking for some sample reports is extremely helpful. Also, use the Internet for your drug rferences. The most helpful sites I have found are rxlist.com or just using google and typing in the way the word sounds. Good luck to you, but with 12 years of transcription experience, I am sure you will do just fine.
