"Mandatory" overtime - SassyPants

I am sick of "mandatory" overtime! I know I should not complain b/c alot of you MTs out there are out of work and would gladly trade, so I hear ya there, but we are not notified of this OT until midday or at the end of the day, especially on Fridays, and we are not asked to work OT. We are told it is "mandatory." Okay, I understand back log and TAT and all that, but even though we are employee status with a set schedule and I work 6 days a week as it is, maybe I have plans and would've worked that extra 1 hour OT early before my shift instead of not knowing about OT until I already started for the day and now am stuck 1 hour after my shift. I have a life and plans and it's not my fault if TAT is screwed up b/c nobody showed up over the weekend. I work 12-6 every Saturday and see only 1, maybe 2, people on working Saturdays. So either no one shows up, everybody has off (like all the higher-ups do because they never work weekends) or they are just "invisible" on instant messenger. I'm sick of it. We have OT almost daily and then 1-2 days of NJA. I do not want to work OT all the time, but yet, I'm afraid I will get fired if I don't stay at least 1 hour extra a day for "mandatory" OT. It's insane! Prime example is last Thursday, I was so slow, then Friday 10 minutes before my shift started there were 3 jobs in the queue, then the dreaded "mandatory OT today for all MTs" with over 90 jobs. How does that happen?

BTW, Amphion is hiring and it's rare that you will have NJA, so anyone who loves OT, come on over, you can have mine :-)

but we're told every Saturday what's expected. Most of my coworkers apparently do 9 hours a day. No way. I do my OT on my Monday off, just easier for me, hate the thought of sitting another hour a day. Yes, I resent it but yes, I like the money and have gotten used to it. I'm hoping someday this will change. Last year, I only had two weeks when we had no mandatory OT on my account. Good thing I have no hubby or kids and not much of a social life. Could be worse.

I think perhaps there is a lot about the "higher ups" you mention that you don't know. Are you on call 24/7??? They are. Do you have to listen to client complaints? They do. Perhaps watch what time emails from those individuals come out and you'll see that they are working odd times, nights and weekends. You are extremely fortunate to have lots of work. One thing you will learn in the transcription industry, it's feast or famine and a fine balance. Perhaps this isn't the best line of work for you??

Could the suits be so devious as to require mandatory overtime so it temporarily boosts income so they look like they are paying a living wage? Or is there just a supply/demand problem? I work second shift, so, due to the time change from PST to CST, after 10 pm my time, the last hour of my shift shows up as the next day. I worked 1.5 hours this morning and then my regular 2:30-11 pm shift, so I figure I should be paid for 1.5 hours overtime, but my calculated time (I recently discovered this on the current time card page) shows me as only getting credit for 0.5 hours overtime with 8 RT (Regular time) + 0.5 OT hours showing up on Sunday and then 1 hour showing up on Monday as ...

I know when I call in to have work assigned (OT accounts) they always ask what kind I want. I usually just tell them "Whatever" and they confirm I do all work types, say thank you and away we go. Not only cut in pay, it seems like the OT is no longer time and a half. I can't believe the amount of money I have lost. Anyone know how they figure overtime??
