Interesting "degree" program ... - see msg

Posted: Jan 21, 2015

The link below is to a "medical scribe" associates degree program.  The course content looks almost like their other programs, like HIT and medical office.  It takes two years.  Also, look at the COST.

That is for a job that requires standing on your feet chasing doctors around dragging a computer, is high-demand and high-stress, and which is paying about minimum wage.

Undecided

Dragging a computer - Analytical

[ In Reply To ..]
You don't "drag around a computer" (you would need an awfully long cord), you use a handheld device similar to a tablet PC. Every facility is different, but where I work the interns and medical students act as scribes and the MAs and CNAs perform the scribe duties. It actually is a valuable skill to have if you can incorporate it into other job duties.

Not everyone has handhelds - Wifi

[ In Reply To ..]
Sorry, but not everyone uses handhelds. Ours are cart-mounted, like an IV stand only stable and more durable. The keyboard and monitor are at an appropriate height. They are wifi, so no cords are necessary.

Facility size? - Analytical

[ In Reply To ..]
I guess it would depend on the size of the facility. I work in ambulatory care for a large facility. All of our exam rooms are equipped with PCs for the provider to use or they bring their handheld device into the room. I've never actually been to an appointment where a scribe was used although our hospital docs use them when they make rounds. I just can't imagine anyone moving a computer from room to room in this technological age.
Facility Size? Enormous - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
My facility is an enormous tertiary-care integrated healthcare system. Yes, it's a teaching facility. We provide more than just ambulatory care.

We have desktop computers everywhere, including clinic rooms, ED rooms, etc., basically everywhere someone could want one except patient rooms. For wards, most providers simply use a nearby computer, or they tote a mobile one along with them. They're very nice computers on a stand-up device with wheels, full size keyboard, big monitor. I'm surprised that you would think that was outdated technology.

We don't make anyone poke around on a tablet, and we think they're harder to carry and juggle. We tried some and the providers didn't prefer them.

Our main reason for avoiding handhelds is network security. We do not allow bring-your-own devices.

We have no scribes and no MT service. Our physicians use a combination of templates and front-end SR.

The thread is about scribes and what - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
they use, not what the physicians use.

Asked my PCP about the pay for his - scribe

[ In Reply To ..]
It was below $8.00 an hour.

Terrible pay - BeenThereMT

[ In Reply To ..]
That's certainly not a living wage.

8-20 dollars/hour - AnonEmus

this is an interesting article. check out about MTs - where do they get their statistics, or does this include overseas MTs... if there are only 20,000 USA MTs (MTStars claim at their site anyway) where are the other 60+ thousand? Scribes are most always pre med and very young...

"The American College of Medical Scribe Specialists predicts that the number of scribes will increase from the 20,000 today to 100,000 by 2020. (The Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn’t track medical scribes specifically. It projects the population of what it calls “medical transcriptionists” to grow from 84,000 in 2012 to 90,500 in 2022.) The ACMSS is working to develop national standards for what’s now an unlicensed profession, says Kristin Hagen, the group’s executive director."

So Should I Just Forego My MT 2 Year Degree And Go On To My Bachelors Degree In Something Else Compl
Mar 08, 2010

After hearing all the hum drum about the future of new medical transcriptionists on this website, I'm starting to feel like a real numskull for even choosing my 2 year degree in medical transcription. It just seems like there's no hope for new medical transcriptionists these days. Should I just get any regular job and just go for my bachelors degree in something completely different? Since I've been posting on hear for the last week and so far the answers to my questions have bee ...

3rd Degree?
Apr 06, 2010

I've been all over the Internet and my texts and past assignments and I cannot find a definitive answer to this.  I'm trying to decide whether it should be "third degree compression fracture" or "3rd degree compression fracture" as everything I've seen online says to spell it out as it pertains to burns.  I'm assuming it would be the same for fractures, but I can't find anything that describes a compression fracture as a degree.  Does anyone know this one ...

I Don't Know What To Get A Degree In
Apr 19, 2014

I'm going back to school. I know that I want a bachelor's degree. The trouble is, I don't know what I want to study. My personality is introverted and shy. I can deal with co-workers, but dealing with the general public and customers is not my strong point. So careers where I'd have to be out front or a "leader" wouldn't be a good option for me. I can't/don't want to be a nurse or teacher. I had thought about getting a degree in Computer Science, but I am not g ...

If You Are An RMT, Is Having A Degree Still Important?
May 16, 2011

College Degree
Feb 17, 2015

I see many job ads for coders that specify a college degree is required.  I am in coding school currently but only have a GED.  What do you think chances are I can get a job with no college degree?  I currently work as a remote MT and have almost 20 years of continuous experience in that field and was hoping that would help me get a job.  I am not at all, however, interested in getting a college degree. ...

So about 6 months ago I started the MT program at Kaplan University and have been really enjoying it so far. I was reading in this forum earlier, however, and read about a school called Andrews. Associates Degree Medical Coding
May 07, 2010

Im so confused, I keep reading on different forums on line how hard it can be to break into medical coding. Does having an AA degree help?  Is that a plus?  I see some on line colleges that are accredited offer AA degrees, AABS degrees, etc.....whats the difference? Is it better for a newbie to go straight to AHIMA and take their cluster of courses or take an on line billing class through one of the on-line universities, then go test at AHIMA and AAPC?  ...

Career Option If You Have A Bachelors Degree
Mar 12, 2012

Interesting post on the coding board about this, so I thought I would mention it here. If you have a bachelors degree in any subject, you can qualify to take the RHIA exam by completing a postbaccalaureate certificate program in health information administration that is accredited by AHIMA.  That opens up a lot of job opportunities.  You should have little trouble with a program like that because of your healthcare background. There are only a few of those programs and some are extre ...

RHIT DEGREE VS CODING CERTIFICATION

Very Interesting.....
Apr 16, 2012

I think it is very interesting how a company will make you jump through hoops to "prove" you are an independent contractor but still want you to use an employee based punch in/out system. You don't get it both ways, if I am an independent contractor, then I don't have to use your employee based punch system, especially when you want to charge for it but to keep track of my own hours is free. ...

It Will Be Interesting To See What Happens When
Jan 28, 2014

Been reading the business perspective of what will happen when (not if - when) minimum wage is increased, and 99% of companies who employ low income workers say that will be the day they lay off most of their employees, or have to close their doors altogether.  Not that I expect MModal to ever "close their doors", but that does leave open the other alternative for a huge layoff as the need to "supplement" employees who aren't earning minimum wage, or who don't meet their ridiculou ...

Something That I Found Very Interesting
Nov 21, 2009

Just for the heck of it, I went to the resume section of this board, and noticed there were quite a few MTs with "entry-level or less than 5 year's experience" wanting to be compensated 10-15 cpl  -- I really seriously doubt that is going to happen, especially for a "newer" MT.  I would suggest that if you are really serious about finding a job in MT, then revise your expected compensation rate to something a bit more realistic. ...
