If you are a happy MT... - B

Posted: May 31, 2013

Could you just give us a brief line or two related to your happiness...why you are still happy in MT despite industry changes...Thanks...in advance!

What is your agenda? - and

what are you going to do with the information?

I though MT week was last week.

Even if someone is happy, I truly believe it's temporary. - NotSelf-Deluded

Sure, there are still pockets where work is great, but the end is near. Accepting it is the hard part.

Happiness - My observation

[ In Reply To ..]
If your happiness depends totally on what you do for a living, then it is time to get some hobbies or go have some fun. The OP wants to know because she can't believe there are actually happy people in this world and can't understand why everyone is not as miserable as she is. Happiness does not have to be tied into one's occupation.

I'm a very happy MT :) - ZvilleMT

I've worked at the same great company for almost 10 years, have a great account with two doctors (one of whom is not a very good dictator, but I've gotten the hang of his accent), have a great boss that works with me regarding problems, questions, extra work, time off, etc., I'm always paid on time, and this job has allowed me to stay at home with my kids, which for me is the most important thing and the whole reason I started doing this in the first place :)

Don't get me wrong - there are days I dread going to the computer, but I had several jobs before this one (teacher, receptionist, admin asst.) and there were days I dreaded going to those jobs too, so this one's really no different.

You transcribe for only 2 doctors? - I can see why you are happy

[ In Reply To ..]
as long as you get enough work to make decent money.

With rotations and new interns and medical students every term on multiple accounts, I have hundreds (maybe thousands?) of doctors. I have shortcuts up the wazoo, but since the dictators all seem to say things differently, my line count has leveled out at around 250 lph.

I'm glad for you that your job situation makes you happy. I hope it continues.

I work for a psych clinic... - ZvilleMT

[ In Reply To ..]
and the turn-around is pretty high - usually a doc only stays there a couple of years, but each MT on that account gets assigned a doc - I have two because I requested extra work. My line count averages about 1300 lines a day, give or take, between the two docs, so the money's pretty good.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed this account doesn't go to VR - that would be disastrous (especially for my really bad dictator) LOL!

To ZvilleMT,

What company do you work for? Do they have any openings? I have been in psych for 21 years and love it!! Wanting to work for someone else than who I am working for and saw your comment. Hoping your place is hiring!!! Tha

Happy - and why

[ In Reply To ..]
married and husband pays bills making MT play money, enjoy being barefoot and pregnant.

That used to be my situation sort of - until my husband got laid off

[ In Reply To ..]
and, for about the last 3 years, has not been able to earn anywhere near what he used to earn.

I hope that your situation remains stable.

Uh huh - exactly why

[ In Reply To ..]
all those who are gloriously happy with all that is wrong in this industry should pause and think, especially the married ones who enjoy being barefoot and pregnant with husbands who pay the bills and are therefore okay with MT play money.
Happy ? - Sally Sue

Don't get me wrong. I have two grown kids and grandchildren that I love with all my heart and soul. I feel that part of the problem is the moms who wanted to stay home with their kids or for whatever reason (and I know being with your kids is important, so don't attack me), but you were willing to go to school and learn a job, that at one time required a lot of knowledge and skill, and then were willing to be paid pennies to do that job in order to stay home. This job at one time paid over 30.00 an hour with retirement plans and full benefits paid by the employer if you were an experienced MT,(and hospitals did let some of their MTs work at home).

So, the people wanting to be able to have "play money", along with the more recent technology with voice recognition, EMR point and click systems, and young tecky-doctors who don't like to dictate, but would rather type it in the EMR themselves, -- now a job that took a lot of skill has become devalued and we are no longer paid enough to support ourselves.

I don't believe it was just because of outsourcing to other countries, because they need US MTs. Employers will hire who is the cheapest labor they can get and some people are willing to do that.

Too bad there isn't a union for just MTs, but probably too late for that. Just one of my opnions....

How can any woman be happy in such a dependent - situation? Barefoot & preggers? UGH!

[ In Reply To ..]

she was being sarcastic - and demeaning

[ In Reply To ..]
insinuating that anyone who does MT from home is in that type of situation, and that is the only reason they want to work from home. not factual at all.

would you settle for not unhappy? - Old School

[ In Reply To ..]
I am right now still making 10/6, have enough work on a single group of accounts, and have a good boss. I'm not terribly unhappy, but I only make about 60% of what I made back in the heyday, and I realize my situation could change at any time.

Happy - relative term

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm satisfied with my job. I'm paid on the higher end of what's out there. The work is just challenging enough to be interesting but not so challenging that I have to spend time listening again and again or looking things up.

I get up in the morning, start my day. Walk my dogs a few times a day. Enjoy the scenery while I work. Clock out at the end of the day.

Direct deposit always on time and always correct.

Yep, I guess you could apply the term happy if you're so inclined.

I'm still happy for the moment - Because my department is UNION

[ In Reply To ..]
So we're still making a good living.

Unfortunately, we have just been notified they're going to outsource the department. They reassured us that they would negotiate with the company they choose to hire us but, gee, they didn't mention that it would almost certainly be at minimum wage.

But for a very, very short period of time longer, I'm happy.

So sorry.... brace yourself - MTSlave

[ In Reply To ..]
Your going to have a rude awakening unfortunately : ( Hopefully it isn't "N"

No amount of "negotiation" with the outsourcing MTSO - will get you a liveable wage, or even - SM

[ In Reply To ..]
guarantee you a job. If you read these boards, most MTs from departments or smaller companies that were "sold downriver" ended up either getting dumped by the buying or outsourcing company, or having their accustomed pay slashed so badly as to be virtually unrecognizable as any kind of professional compensation for work done. Most of them are either fired, or leave.

If your department is union, you can bet your bottom dollar that the MTSO will do everything possible to get rid of you. I would start looking now, for something OUT of MT, while you still have some time, and can afford the gas your car will need to drive to job interviews.

Yeah, I know - Union MT (for a minute longer)

[ In Reply To ..]
I've been following the boards here, especially the Big Two, because I've seen this writing on the wall for months (if not years) now.

The "But you have to THINK POSITIVE!" contingent in my department, yes, are going to be in for a very, very hard landing, because whenever any of us realists try to tell them what to expect they pretty much put their fingers in their ears and say, "LALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!"

I've been working for a while now on figuring out what to do when this happens. At least we'll be eligible for unemployment, so for those of us who have saved up money to pay tuition, that's up to a year of retraining while getting unemployment.

The question, of course, being in what. The job market is horrific. Not just MT, but I think healthcare in general, has become a truly brutal field in which to work.

the union couldn't save your jobs? - scoutMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't get that...aren't they supposed to negotiate with the administration? no one has any power anymore, what is going on. do we have to have a revolution, is that the only way to ever have justice? very discouraging...your union should have fought very hard to keep your jobs.

Union jobs - Anonymous

[ In Reply To ..]
Unfortunately, when it comes to technological issues, the union cannot negotiate with administration to save jobs. I know quite a few MTs who were union members who lost their jobs when Epic and the EHR platforms arrived on the scene. It's all part of a bigger picture and it affects the entire facility. The union has no power to save jobs that are being eliminated. Another example would be the automotive industry, where so much of that has become mechanized and done robotically. Textiles would be another one. Those people were union workers and their jobs went overseas. Unions were great at negotiating wages and benefits, but even they can only accomplish certain things.

I'm happy, but........... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
It's hard to STAY happy. I do lots of job jumping, jumping ship before it sinks, in order to continue to make a good living. So, I wouldn't say it is divine happiness, more like day to day happiness I suppose.

Happier than I was - MT10Y

[ In Reply To ..]
I left MQ for a small MTSO in 2007. I then left that company in November where I had crappy accounts with crappy dictators and made crappy money on VR. I'm now at a local family practice group with about 10 other MTs. Still get to work from home but paid hourly and making more now part time than I was sitting at my desk for 40 hours a week. Used to cry nearly every day at my old job out of pure frustration because I couldn't believe I had busted my butt at school to learn what I thought would be a very marketable skill only to feel completely unappreciated. So, yes I'm happy now. Finally.

Happy but insecure about MT future - Leaving MT

[ In Reply To ..]
Right now at this very moment, I have a great MT job with an MTSO and I am happy for the moment. I work for a small MTSO, though, and we only have 2 accounts. One account is huge and is not only the acute care facility but several outpatient clinics affiliated with that facility as well. That account provides most of our work. The other account is overflow only and sends us work sporadically. Our clients are very happy with our work, but I know all it would take is a change in personnel in the HIM department for our contract to not get renewed. For that reason, I am transitioning out of MT. I have become too spoiled by my MTSO to put up with the low pay and nonsense at other MTSOs, and at my age (late 40s) I don't see MT as being a viable option to last me until I am ready to retire.

HAPPY MT - roybrit

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm happy in my job, but I have had the same job for 20 years. It is an in-house position, 8 hours/day, 5 days/week, weekends off and a very good salary with ETO, holiday pay and sick time. I work in the pathology department of a major metropolitan hospital. I have been an MT since 1979 and have never been unemployed. I have never, however worked from home. I realize this job will probably not be here 5 years for now but I'm fine wiht that, it has served me well

Happy Transcriptions Is Still Happy

Who in their right mind names a company "Happy Transcriptions?" In this day and age, all I see is "sad" MTs and, in my opinion, if "Happy Transcriptions" is still happy, they can only be messing even more with us poor "sad" MTs. All I can say is I am so "happy" I am so close to being on my way out of MT! ...

Happy At TTS
May 03, 2010

I've been at TTS for almost 3 years and I have nothing but positive things to say about TTS.  I never have to guess what TTS expects from me, and I do my best to deliver that on a consistent basis.  Communication flows freely and efficiently.  My team leader and 2 shift leads are EXCELLENT managers in my opinion.  Everything I invest in my job comes back to me and then some.  I can recommend TTS to anybody unapologetically. ...

Is Anyone Happy Being An MT
Oct 30, 2010

I am surprised at just how many or your are miserable with what you do.  I am a new MT ans I am also having trouble finding work.  It's not easy.  I can see that having editing to fall back on would be good.  I have read the posts about don't do this just to work from home.  I have small children and my only choice would be daycare if I went to work somewhere, which would eat up half my pay check.  Sometimes it's not just money, sometimes it's fo ...

Is Anyone Actually Happy With VR?
Jul 08, 2011

I've read tons and tons of negative complaints about VR, but are there people out there who actually like it? I'm starting training on a new job this weekend and 90% of it is VR, but all clinic notes, no ops or discharge summaries. It seems like it might easy and a nice change from straight typing for me. Any thoughts? ...

Any Happy MTs Out There???
Nov 28, 2011

Hi, everyone.   I was just wondering if there are any MTs out there that are happy with their jobs and are able to make some good money in this profession.  I have read lots and lots of posts, and it seems like a huge percentage of the posts are about how bad people's jobs are and how little money they are making.  I understand people need to vent, but there have to be some MTs that are happy and making money.  I recently graduated from one of the top MT schools and ...

I am a seasoned (25+ years) transcriptionist who has recently found this site and like it thus far.  I have been looking for supplemental income.  However, there seems to be a lot of negativity regarding at-home transcription jobs.  Is anyone happy at home and with their employer?  If so, what companies are good companies?  I recently tested for M-Modal, but am a little apprehensive after seeing some of these comments.   ...

Happy With Job
Nov 06, 2012

I understand how frustrated many people are with the way things are going with MT jobs.  I am not posting this to make anyone feel worse, but to let people know that there are some good jobs in MT.  I work for a private local medical office. I had been worried, too, as our office offered voice recognition to docs and some use it.  A lot got frustrated, mostly the ones who want their notes to be correct, and went back to using our services.  I had even been looking at online M ...

Looking for some MTs/QCs that are happy where they work. Just wanting to hear some happy stories.  When I was first acquired by Nuance from my previous employer, I wasn't happy but I have to say that over the past 2 years it has turned out to be pleasant.  At first, I was very resistant and got all upset over Fiesa and marks being made.  I had to realize it wasn't personal and I also had to realize that the mistakes were mine.  Anyway, just wanted to read some positive stories on here.  Every time I visit the Nuance ...

Anybody Happy?
Oct 20, 2013

I am wondering if there is a single person on this forum who is an MT who is happy with their job (including the miniscule pay that would be appropriate compensation if it were around 1975 rather than 2013 or lived in another country in which one can buy a lot more with 50 cents). I think the job in terms of its duties is fine. It's just the pay that I begrudge. You can "earn" just as much being on disability SSI, which I was on before getting in this. But I'd still rather be finan ...

Looking For Happy MTs!
Nov 17, 2013

However, I am a recent graduate of Everett CC and am starting a new job on Monday. I would like to hear from anyone who is happy and productive in their MT career and not looking for a new one. So far, every pay check has been on time and accurate. Two months out and I am making more than I ever made at MM and I expect it to increase as my skills get even b ...

Happy MTs?
Jan 07, 2014

I see a lot of MTs on this board who are not very happy about their current situation/job. Are there any MTs that are happy with their job? I have been with the same company for over 6 years and have a steady paycheck, plenty of work, PTO time, and paid holidays. It is not what it used to be, but I can't complain. I left MT to work from Hertz at home in April where they hired 64 employees. The week after labor day, without any warning, they called all of us in and laid us off.  They took the insurance the same day and gave us our sign on bonus that we had earned and a severance check, provided we signed a covenant not to sue...so it is not only Transcription companies that have no regard for their employees, it is most companies...So I ask myself...Is anybody truly happy with their  jobs??? ...
