Any Happy MTs Out There??? - tobeanmt

Posted: Nov 28, 2011

Hi, everyone.   I was just wondering if there are any MTs out there that are happy with their jobs and are able to make some good money in this profession.  I have read lots and lots of posts, and it seems like a huge percentage of the posts are about how bad people's jobs are and how little money they are making.  I understand people need to vent, but there have to be some MTs that are happy and making money.  I recently graduated from one of the top MT schools and am wondering if I spent a lot of time and money on a course that is not going to improve my current situation of working in a call center.  I want to get a job that I don't have to deal with the public and MT would be a great fit.  Anybody's comments are welcome.  I would like to be assured that there are people who are happy and making money at the same time.  Thanks in advance.

I'm happy, I make good money, and I have good benefits - but I'm also realistic in that I know I'm pretty lucky to have the job I do working for a hospital directly rather than a service. For me, I will never work for a national service again, and most likely the small ones are going to just keep disappearing/dying on the vine, so while I love my job and am doing well in the position I have, I'm also looking at what will be next for me if I lose this job to a service and/or voice/speech and/or Dr. entry/point-click - which is always a possibility. As I said, I won't go back to working for a large national service. I'm probably jaded because I was with MedQuist before, but I personally don't think any of the "big" MTSOs are any better for an MT (pay is terrible, editing/VR pay is even worse, and jobs are hemorrhaging to overseas MTs at a rate that is killing US MTs), so while I'm currently happy and doing well as an MT, I'm keeping my eyes/ears/mind open to future possibilities in other fields.

Sorry, I don't know if my response helps/encourages or discourages you -- best of luck to you though! I hope you can find an MT job that fits your needs. They do exist - they are just becoming more rare and harder to obtain.

been at it since 1993, pretty happy with it. now at age 71 am working 3 days a week, like what i do and going to hang in there until the job plays out or i do. hopefully you will find a job that is a good fit for you!

You and I are the same vintage. I really liked MT (did it for 40 years) and, after some time off for travel, etc. and maybe buy a different house (we will see), may even take on a couple of hours a day just because I enjoy it. I had to kiss a lot of toads, including MedQuist (yuck!) before finding a nice, mid-sized company. They ARE out there. I hope people here will not become discouraged. I always say MT is kind of like dating--eventually you find the right match! (Not that I have dated in decades, mind you.)

Hospital setting - Justme

Just curious One Happy MT, how your work is assigned in the hospital setting? Is it on a First/In/First Out basis? What system do your use? AND do you have VR at your hospital yet?

Thanks for any info!

I haev been an MT since 1979 and have worked exclusively in Pathology. I have never worked for an agency or independent contractor and I love it. I have a good reliable salary, great benefits and more than a constant supply of work. It would be my preference to work from home, but looks like that will never happen in my current position (I have been here since 1993). I would not however advise anyone to go into this field at this time. It is definitely a dying profession and I doubt there are 20 years left in this position as it is currently. I work for the largest medical system in our area and most people would give anything for a position here, so I know I am definitely blessed.

I LOVE BEING AN MT - AND I LOVE MY JOB

[ In Reply To ..]
I make decent money, and could make more if I were motivated. Unfortunately, I am content to do just the minimum, because that pays the bills. If anything big comes up, I buckle down and make the money I need. And I work for the Q. So not only will people post negatively about my being "happy", they will also post negatively about me working for the "Q" and being "happy". But its the truth! And before anyone says it, I am not a suit. Just a happy MT, with good accounts, who very rarely runs out of work (actually prays I do sometimes) and makes a decent living. And very grateful to be able to work from home, because I hate office politics and cliques.

Stay happy as long as you can. If you have "good" accounts, they will be gone before long. They only accounts that will stay in the US are the absolutely awful ones (like mine).

Happy and financially secure MT here - AnaPhylaxis

[ In Reply To ..]
I have a full-time position and a part-time QA position, both of which I totally enjoy, and bring in a very decent amount of money to pay all the bills AND actually be able to have a normal social life as well.

Bear in mind though, it took me a couple of years to end up in the perfect scenario for my needs. There are decent MTSOs out there, but they're usually smaller and take lots of patience to find.

Good luck to you!

Could not have said this better myself - Happy MT Robin

[ In Reply To ..]
Except for the part time job. I have one FT MT job and one part time non MT job at a counseling service.

Like AnaPhylaxis, though, it took me a while to find the perfect fit.

Thanks HappyMTRobin - AnaPhylaxis

I'd LOVE to find another source of my part-time IC income such as counseling. May I ask what type of counseling it is you do and how you broke into it? Does this mean you've parted ways with the hotel you were working at part-time?

I'm such a makeup/jewelry/accessory addict that I've even seriously considered applying at my local Macy's just to earn a little extra cash...and get that lovely employee discount they offer, LOL!
AnaPhylaxis - Happy MT Robin
[ In Reply To ..]
Wow, you have a good memory to remember that I worked at a hotel. Yes, I did part ways with them - I'm closing in on 50 and that's just way too old to be doing a graveyard shift at this point in my life, especially for not a great deal of money.

I don't actually do any counseling - I work in the billing office dealing with the insurance claims...Good times!!! It's a Christian counseling service that is housed in a church and actually started out 20 years ago or so as the major ministry of this church. I started there on a very part time basis helping out with a psychiatrist who came in to do med consults when I worked at the church in the business office. When I left the church job, they couldn't find anyone to work the one night a week with the MD so I kept doing just that for a number of years and then gradually moved into two days a week in the billing office.

It gets me out of the house two days a week because otherwise I'd stay in all day and either work or read or do something else completely sedentary and antisocial. The work itself is pretty mind numbing and often frustrating, but the people I work with are some of the best people I have ever met and the director of the agency is a licensed clinical psychologist and an ordained minister and one of the funniest and kindest human beings I have ever had the privilege and pleasure of knowing.

It's a non-profit, so none of us will ever get rich monetarily working there, but the spiritual and mental benefits far outweigh anything else.

Go for the job at Macy's. Even if the money isn't great, if it's something that you enjoy and you end up with people that you like being around it will be absolutely worth it.

I landed a job that most would consider in house, but still work from home. I have great pay, benefits and a retirement package. I'm happy and would be happy doing this until retirement, but I'm afraid it won't be there that long.

I have been doing this for 20 years now, and I make great money--about $30.00 an hour. And I work for a good, medium sized (under 500 MTs) MTSO. So yes, they are out there. You gotta kiss some frogs and pay yer dues, but they are out there. Chin up!

Didn't you know you're not allowed to say you are doing well? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Obviously you're too stupid to know that you aren't really doing well or too naive not to know that even though you've been doing well for 20 years, you too will be failing next week or next month.

It is politically incorrect to say that you continue to do well. You gotta read the rule book! No happy people allowed.

"Not allowed!" - Horsey gal

[ In Reply To ..]
Political correctness is intellectual terrorism.

That's not true. - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
As a peruser of this board for a few years, I have witnessed several "happy MT" posts and have never seen the kind of response you described. Usually other posters are happy for them and start asking them questions about their work situation so they can be "happy" too.

What I HAVE seen, however, are some smug, arrogant MTs who are doing well with condescending, critical attitudes toward those who are not. They state outright that anyone who isn't doing as well as they are must be lazy, stupid, and overall just a lousy MT. That is ludicrous because it's patently false and completely ignores the realities of our profession's milieu as it circles the drain.

Yes, I love my accounts! Happy, happy. I am an IC. I just landed 2 new clients this week on top of my other clients. Recovering from loss of large account that went EMR a while back and doing great. Hard work and perseverance pay off. Hang in there.

I would be a lot happier if - I could get laid

Happy At TTS

Is Anyone Happy Being An MT
Oct 30, 2010

I am surprised at just how many or your are miserable with what you do.  I am a new MT ans I am also having trouble finding work.  It's not easy.  I can see that having editing to fall back on would be good.  I have read the posts about don't do this just to work from home.  I have small children and my only choice would be daycare if I went to work somewhere, which would eat up half my pay check.  Sometimes it's not just money, sometimes it's fo ...

Happy With Job

I understand how frustrated many people are with the way things are going with MT jobs.  I am not posting this to make anyone feel worse, but to let people know that there are some good jobs in MT.  I work for a private local medical office. I am wondering if there is a single person on this forum who is an MT who is happy with their job (including the miniscule pay that would be appropriate compensation if it were around 1975 rather than 2013 or lived in another country in which one can buy a lot more with 50 cents).
