If all work eventually goes overseas, how does that affect MTSOs? - wondering

Posted: Jul 15, 2014

It seems it would behoove them to keep the work here unless they will remotely manage.

Who do you think is sending it overseas? - NM

MTSO's - nana

I worked for about a year for a local MTSO and I went into their office sometimes to work. When they outsourced some of the accounts to India they went to India and hired a company to do their work so if there were any issues all they had to do was call the MTSO in India. The company I worked for then edited their work, which was horrible but they said the pay on that account was so bad they couldn't afford to pay us to do that work, so both of the owners would sit and edit the work and neither one of them were transcriptionists so you can imagine some of the errors that went into those reports. Their reports had to be edited 100%, so they sat there all day long editing.

I will not defend these huge MTSOs that exploit transcriptionists, but there are MTSOs that are hurting as much as we are. In order to try to stay in business they would low ball bids and still not get them because someone was willing to do it for less than they could. I really liked these MTSO and hated to quit but there just was not enough work to keep me going. When I left they had 2 full time transcriptionists and the rest were in India.

Some of that work is already coming back from - India, only to go to doctor-run EMR.

Then nobody types it, and the MTSO is out an account.

Or learn how to use EMR programs! sm - Just me

I have learned multiple. As an MT, we have to keep learning to stay ahead!

Why bother? Medical billers make more $ than - IMANMT2

we do. Come to think of it, the receptionist is paid better. :D I know, because I've been looking at different options. Should have gone the legal route. Legal secretaries do well - they also want a bachelors.

I thought about coding but I don't see that many ads for coders. Makes me wonder if it's not starting to saturate. You see ads for HIM specialists where they want someone who can code, bill, AND do transcription, and file, answer the phone, and have 5 years' experience with customer service. Then there is the unit secretary/nurse aide who has the job responsiblity list from you-know-where. I have no idea how they get all of that done in a single shift factoring in all the interuptions that go on at the nurse's station. I take a job list seriously. I figure if the duty is listed it's one you are responsible for, but it could be sort of cross training for what-if scenarios. Don't know.
You do not see many ads for coders - because ...

First, you are looking in the wrong places. Most are filled through professional association, referrals, and other sources, not places generally available to the public. You probably see only the physician office billing jobs and entry jobs, too, not the higher-level and advancement positions.

Second, it isn't becoming "saturated," as you suggest. There is low turnover. Employers are not constantly looking for replacements, as they are in lower-paying fields.

As it happens, a huge number of coding jobs go unfilled because qualified applicants cannot be found.

Many own the companies overseas--sm - anon

I am pretty sure that Nuance owns multiple companies in India. But as above, much of that will be lost to point and click EMR.

I was googling a word the other day and - IMANMT2

this guy's web site popped up. It took a little reading and I discovered he was in India, talking about American companies you could work for. He said something like MT was slow in one town but another that I had never heard of was a better option. They were big company names at least 4 of them. They aren't companies I would work for anyway so I didn't make note of them specifically. I've tried to find his site/blog again but no luck. Needle in a haystack if you google medical transcription india. He had an entry about Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilico-volcanoconiosis being the longest word but that didn't help my search either. If I could remember the name of that town he mentioned. It was not bangalore, hyderabad, or pune...

So, yes, they are outsourcing have been and aren't stopping. Have no plan to. He was eager to hear of VR because (I'm going to paraphrase) one can go straight to the good jobs of editor/QA. :D Which is what I thought the plan for VR was all along. It's the English that stumps them well VR can do that fairly well, and they can check for medical content and fix or not. No one is really going to be looking ... since with VR some errors are okay, from what I've read. Don't do it myself. Feels like a mistake to sell the profession further down the road. MT has been good to me. The very least I can do is not facilitate its demise.

WEBMEDX Line Counting Could Affect ALL MTSOs,a Must Read

http://www.executivehm.com/article/Transcription-in-the-21st-century/ This article (above link)  has quotes from present COO of Wedmedx who is President of MTIA and used to be former Spheris boss.  This article explains how the MTSOs want our lines counted.  It explains how they want to take away all keystrokes that cannot be seen by the naked eye.  Won't this effectively save the hospitals and MTSOs from paying MTs for up to 1/3 of the keystrokes w ...

My Opinion On What Is Eventually Going To Happen Here At MQ For Us ALL.....
Sep 23, 2010

Slowly they will transfer accounts, one by one, to India, starting with the easiest accounts/work types first.  Soon we here in the US will be left with ONLY the bottom of the barrel indecipherable CRAP........which we will have to send to QA hence our pay will be practically reduced to what they pay for Indians to do the work.  A lot of us will finally throw in the towel, not being able to accept minimum wage, which will be fine with them.  They just don't want it all happen ...

Affect Vs Effect ?
Nov 24, 2009

Just finishing up the night shift and want to go to bed and let the Sudafed take me away.  I'm thinking it's affect (the noun), but just want some input to be sure (overtired paranoia setting in).  Of course, this is the last note of the night too.  If I weren't tired, I know I wouldn't be doubting myself.  I have given her a note to that affect. - or - I have given her a note to that effect. I have been an MT for years and years and years (not telling my age haha) but I still to this day have the hardest time with affect versus effect...anyone have any genious tips on which to use when would be greatly appreciated??? For instance:  It is hard to determine what affect/effect the medication will have or how it will affect/effect the patient's outcome. The only one I am really positive about is when it has to do with the patient's affect. Thanks you are all the best ...

How Do I Know If Primary Is Being Sent Overseas

Overseas MT Opportunities?
Jan 05, 2012

<sigh>  With the USA going down the toilet fast (see Military Detention Act), I fleetingly thought about pursuing something overseas.  I used to work with a lady who took a position in Saudi, Arabia. They paid to move her over there (into a dorm-type building with other MTs), where she lived for a year or two.  She was subjected to incredibly sexist treatment by the Arab men BUT loved it there and wound up marrying an American she met while there.  Of course, ...
