Inhouse job in a hospital! Doing QA! HOURLY WAGE!!! I cannot believe my good fortune.

Curious - see msg

Did you ask them when they're going to outsource to MM or N? Or when they're going to start production pay?

I guess one can milk it for all they can. I always do recommend looking for a new career, though, while milking MT.

Umm, did you see that she was hired for QA? - sm

Why spoil her happiness? I think that sounds like it is intentionally in-house.

Umm, Yes - see msg

Yes, I saw it was QA. In-house QA is not excluded from any of the nonsense going on in this business. They also often get paid on production. Hospital sometimes ditch the hourly rate and pay on production.

I quit the MT/QA biz 2 years ago, but I did QA for years at an hourly rate, and if I was still being paid hourly, I'd still be in the biz. I would have no reason to leave. But, I did look for other work (non-MT related) in the meantime because I knew where it was all going.

I'm just advising the OP to keep her eyes open.
SO WHY ARE YOU HERE? - anonymous

If you quit MT/QA 2 years ago why are you still coming here to put people down????
Why I Am Here - see msg
[ In Reply To ..]
I am here to help educate and give hope that one can get out of MT. I am not here to put people down. I see my posts as more of educating people. If I see that someone doesn't realize the field is going down the tubes, I encourage them to stay where they are while they can, but to keep their eyes open at a non-MT career.

That is why I'm here. I am also here to give hope that there IS work besides MT out there that doesn't require a degree, credential, or anything else. My responses to notes are not just for the OP or reply-ers, they're for all to read and take in.
Umm, yes - see message - It is not that bad

I am sorry that you have been so badly burned by MT/QA. However, my experience as a QA specialist on site is quite a bit difference. When my facility outsourced, I was asked to stay and was placed in the position that I currently hold, performing QC on the outsourced work. I answer questions for the MTs and provide feedback and as I mentioned I also act as an educator. I am paid hourly and paid well. My facility has the goal of having all the providers on Dragon by 2017 but having seen how well that process has worked so far, I'm not very optimistic. If it does happen and my job gets eliminated I can retire and walk away. I have no interest in pursuing anything else at this point in my life. I actually see QA becoming a larger role where I work and I sincerely doubt that I am going to be converted to production pay, our facility is not going to change their payroll policy for one employee.

I think it is great that the OP found something where she is able to use her knowledge. It is a job that I always saw myself doing, and finally got the chance due to unforeseen circumstances.

The world might end tomorrow too, but I'm not losing sleep over it. Bloom where you are planted.
Glad you Can Retire... - see msg

I didn't know about the fact that you can retire if your current job doesn't work out. As my note said, I left MT, but I am also in a situation where if my current secretarial job doesn't work out, I can and will retire.

I do feel the need the encourage all to work towards doing something else, because MT has gone to a very bad place. I will say again, don't just up and quit, but do have a backup plan. There is life after MT!

And my best to all!

actually they outsource now - happy dance

Part of my job will be reviewing the work sent in by the service, and part of it will be reviewing the front end speech recognition reports produced by the docs.

congrats to you. - nana7

Happy Dance - Me too

I also landed in a QA position after an MT layoff. We outsource but I QA the work on site when it is returned. You will have stressful days but I enjoy being in somewhat of an educator role and it is also a learning experience for me sometimes. The onsite jobs are best because (so far) they are hourly. Enjoy your new role and good luck.

My feet are doing a happy dance for you! Congrats! - Linda

Is It That Hard Or Am I Just Lucky?
Nov 15, 2011

I have been looking around the boards for a bit and I see everyone complaining about working for peanuts (or less) for their MTSO.  I currently work at home for a somewhat local hospital in my area.  They sent all of their transcriptionists home about 6 years ago and their coders are home now too.  I know that the other big hospital system in my area has all of their transcriptionsts at home too.  Is it really that hard to find a job like mine or did I just get lucky?  ...
