I'm getting out of the MT biz for good! - sayonara

Posted: Jan 20, 2012

After struggling financially and being increasingly unhappy with my job for three years (yes, only three years) I am officially DONE with MT work. I have other skills that would be more fullfilling to pursue and i'm going to do it. Honestly, i'd settle for a job at a grocery store at this point. At least i'd have a steady paycheck. I don't know if it's just me, but the monotony of this job makes me crazy. Just doing the same thing all day, every day, no socialization, QAs breathing down my neck and making incorrect "corrections" on my work that I get griped at for, and never hearing a "good job" every now and then. I can honestly say I hate this job. It was a waste of time and money to get into this field and i'm ready to cut my losses. Yell

It is monotonous and somewhat boring at times, especially if you are locked into just one kind of specialty or have only a handful of dictators. I have been in the business for 20 years now and find that is not so monotonous anymore. I wish you luck in your chosen field. :O)

I've been doing this for 20 years now and feel the same way, - sm

My pay has gone down also. Two years ago, I made over 50,000. The year before last was in the 40s. This year, I'm not even going to hit the 40 mark. I totally understand. On those days that nothing is easily understood and I'm sitting here in my chair wishing I could just get out and do something else, I aways say, I'd rather be digging a ditch this typing this mess. I so know what you're talking about.

I'm with you on this one. I worked for 24 years in an orthopedic office as an employee and then laid off. There were problems there as there as everywhere but I made good money and was allowed to work at home out of all the office politics. After I was laid off, I then went to work for a company and didn't make anywhere near what I made in the office. In fact I figured I would have to work 18 hours a day to make what I did there and I went on to try to meet the 1000 line requirement and messed up my left wrist in four months. It now hurts when I play my guitar which makes me very angry to say the least. I worked for THAT company for three years and quit last October when I found a local job which has not panned out to be much. Anyway, all through the three years with THAT company I broke three ergo keyboards, very expensive, and threw books at the wall out of frustration. Needless to say, I hated THAT company. Never was told I did a good job and had QA on my back. Now I may have a chance to get into the local hospital here and hope I can but until then, I applied at our local UPS store which sounds 100% better than working for any of THOSE companies. So to you,I have to say been there done that and unless I can get into a MT position that I feel somewhat comfortable doing, I'm out of it too. Good Luck!!!

I agree with you completely sm - iamnew

I absolutely hate this profession as well, but for several reasons which I can't get into, or this will be moved into the Gab Board, I can't quit right now.

I just got back into MT, but right now I am using it as a bridge while I get my life together, so I can change professions. Hopefully I will only need to be doing it for about 6 or so more months.

Good luck on your future endeavors!

I like what the above poster typed, that this is a "bridge." It really is one of the neat aspects of our line of work. It can be done on a temporary basis if need be. Tomorrow does not have to be yesterday and one can still make some money and not have to readjust their whole life.

I need one of those bridges now. I took what I thought would be a good opportunity and now there is no work because the doctors keep going on vacation so I am looking for a bridge. Applied to the local UPS store yesterday, maybe that is it. :)
If I get you a bridge, will you get me a lifeboat? nm - iamnew

2014 - Not A Good Year For This MT — But I Found A Good Fit (finally)
Jan 12, 2015

Rarely do I start discussion on mtstars - however, 2014 was a particularly challenging year for myself - an experienced MT/Editor (15+ years). However, I realize that many other MTs may be in the same position, i.e., having many years devoted to working at the Big MTSOs including “the M,” and “the N” and (now to be included) “the T” following close behind in total numbers of MT/Editors on staff. (Hint: Sure most of you know the M, the N and the T - and the names have been int ...

Good Friday; Good Bye Spheris
Apr 02, 2010

Well Good Friday to me.  I left Spheris.  It is indeed the best Friday for me in a very long time.  I've had it with their lousy platform, Mafia QA (they try their best to kill your spirit), mandatory this, mandatory that, do this, don't do that, change this, don't change that; no, don't change this, don't change that, and on and on and on, and now their bankruptcy.  No PTO for the next 4 months to keep the clients satisfied during ...

Good Bye MT
Nov 02, 2009

I so look forward to these last 5 years going by fast:  Going back to college to get a  degree and walking away from MT never looking back.  If it wasnt for paying for my schooling, I'd be out of this by now.  If things get too bad I'd consider cutting lunch meat, stocking shelves at the neighborhood grocery store, whatever.  The only up side to my 10+ years of doing MT work has been able to stay home for my kids and making pocket change.&nb ...

Who Is MQ ASR Good For?
Jul 01, 2010

Makes no difference that I know of to the dictator.  Doesn't save him or her any money. Probably a negative for the patient, as I sincerely believe there is a bigger chance of their medical record being less than accurate. Sure is not a plus for us MT/ME's, except those extremely few who seem to have the right account, I would venture a guess of about 5% of us.  The only positive I see is to the client.  They are getting lied to, that if they go with ASR, it is such a g ...

I Can't Be THAT Good!
Oct 13, 2010

Y'all are freaking me out!  All this talk about PM and being watched when uploading or downloading a job, etc. etc. etc.  I am only a lowly second-tier MT.  I have been corrected a lot and it's all valid -- or an opinion based correction.  All my corrections have fallen in the minor minor category, but the way y'all talk you'd think I'd be let go by now.  OMG people!  Our QA person just transferred to some other department, and I suspect all ...

Trying To Be A Good MME
Jun 11, 2011

I have been an MT for 8 years before moving up to the MME position recently.  I told myself that I would never nitpick as I experienced in the past.  I still hold true to that.  We are to only fill in the blanks unless we note an obvious error, then its full QA, except we get paid the fill-in-the-blank line rate rather than 100% QA line rate (3 cpl rather than 4).  However, if we fill in the blank and NOT catch an error that is caught on the MTs audit, we get clobbered ( ...

All The Good Ones Are Gone Now.
Jan 08, 2013

I had been feeling so fortunate, getting mostly good dictators in recent months, but now, in the past couple of weeks, all I'm getting are dictators with thick accents with bad sound quality and static or female dicators with high-pitched, monotone voices that are like fingernails on a chalk board. I keep thinking it's a temporary phase, but there seems to be not much let up. It's so discouraging. I hope to see the day when all this overseas outsourcing comes to a halt with new ...

Oct 18, 2013

May 16, 2014

There have been so many times that I come to this board and see MTs venting about MTSOs that are hard to work for, don't pay enough, don't give enough work, don't pay on time, nit-picky QA, etc., etc., etc.  I have been an MT for more than 15 years and recently acquired pretty big account.  I have a few MTs that I have contracted and in the process of training.  When I hired I STRESSED that I needed someone flexible, someone that HAS EXTENSIVE OP note experience, an ...

Good Ol' Days
Oct 29, 2009

Remember the good old days, when we worked either in a transcription pool, the medical records department or at a doctor's office?  I was trying to figure out what a doctor was saying in a report and dreading leaving a QA marker for fear of "points"... I remember going to hunt down the doctors in the old days, sitting down to have conversations with them. They would help us fill in the blanks and mostly apologize for not speaking clearly (at least they did at the hospital where I ...
