Has anyone had experience doing any other transcription besides medical - thinking about getting out

Posted: Sep 10, 2011

I have become pretty miserable/bored lately.  I know its the job itself and I know what the future holds for it, but I can't go back to school right now to try to further my education for something else because I homeschool my kids and that is my first priority.  MT is just part time.  I've been MT'ing for close to 15 years and have never done any other transcribing.  I was just wondering if I wanted to venture out of medical and do general transcription would that give me a boost again?  I used to love this job, but with the pay cuts and its uncertain future, I just am finding I am unhappy and don't even want to work.  If it is something to look into, what kind of research would I do to try to find a job like that and how would I know it was reputable?  Does general transcription pay good?  Just kind of testing the waters here and any info is appreciated.

I've done some corporate transcription - Zville MT

I worked for a company called Ubiqus and did what they called corporate transcription, which means you transcribe board meetings, seminars, presentations, and things like that. They also did medical seminars and presentations for drug research. They pay by the word, which can be really good depending on how many jobs you accept per pay period. How many jobs you get typically depends on how good of a job you do and doing it in a timely manner. I used an IM with my contact there and he would contact me almost daily with work.

The corporate work was easy (it also paid less than the medical, but not by too much.) The medical work was hard and I spent a lot of time looking things up, especially the research ones - they go into a lot of detail about how the drugs work and that kind of thing.

It wasn't my cup of tea and I got tired doing it after a while, but if you're looking for a change of pace, this would be a good place to start - it's definitly different ;) Hope this helps and good luck to you :)

I used to work through Ubiqus too. - me

I miss it sometimes. I really enjoyed the complex medical research required, but from a bottom-line aspect it was a losing proposition. I think about going back to them every now and then.

If anyone's interested in applying, I know Fall used to be a busy season for the medical side.

I am not sure if anyone would be interested, but I left the field of medical transcription and learned Braille transcription. There was (maybe still is) a grant available through NLS (the braille site, not the lifeguard site!!) to learn braille for FREE! They will send or e-mail the materials to you and you study at your own pace. You can then be certified through the Library of Congress. I work for a school district and transcribe lessons/worksheets for a sight-impaired student. The hours are great, the pay is great and summers and holidays off!!!! I was more than happy to say, "Bye, bye medical transcription." You can download "Perky Duck" through the Duxbury website to get your computer set up to accept the braille dots! Good luck.

that sounds like fun... - thinking about getting out

I will definitely check into that one. How great would that be to be able to have the same schedule as my kids?????

Could you please email me some more info regarding this...is Braille still widely used? Is it hard to obtain a position once trained, etc. Where would one apply for position?? ksmith30@new.rr.com

any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

My hat is off to you. However, how difficult is Braille to learn, especially for older transcriptionists? I have always been fascinated with the idea of Braille and had a dear friend who read Braille. I never asked her to show me though, and she is deceased now. Can it all be done on computer, or do you have to have equipment? Thanks for the information and your time. I am an oldie and may not punctuate the same as today and might need a class in English?

I sent you an email... - thinging about getting out

Lucy, I sent you an email off post, but didn't know if you would get it. Sounds like others are just as interested. Can you please post some more information. Thanks so much.

I had never heard of them before, and there do not seem to be many posts in the archives about them, but then again, maybe that is a good thing.  Generally, you hear about the bad companies (which I realize is subjective), but not always about the good ones.  Any information is appreciated.  Thanks. ...

Anybody Have Experience With National Medical Transcription Company?
Oct 07, 2010

I received a job interview for an IC position with a company called National Medical Transcription with headquarters in New York.  Has anybody worked with this company? My main concern was that the company does not offer direct deposit but rather issues a check via mail.  Next concern is a "transparent" means of tallying up productivity for 65 character lines and spaces included. I would appreciate any feedback from present or past contractors. Thank you. ...

My Positive Experience With Another Medical Must
Aug 16, 2014

I'm leaving my weekend part-time position with Another Medical Must only because I'm going to be working as a pet sitter/dog walker on weekends starting next weekend.  The owner of Another Medical Must has posted the vacancy here on MT Stars, and I would just like to say that she is wonderful to work for.  I've been slowly phasing out of MT work the past couple of years since I now work full time at our university and only need to supplement my full time income with a fe ...

Can You Relate? My Experience As A Medical Transcriptionist
Oct 19, 2011

I've been an MT for 12 years.  I started out with MedQuist as a subcontractor.  Life was great!  Then came employee status and being performance managed, VS, crappy software, overworked supervisors and nit picking about being literally 10 minutes late for work or getting heavy points taken off my quality score for typing "were" instead of "was."  I went to Focus, which was then taken over by Nuance, and the same experience as above started happening.  So I went ...

Medical Transcription At Home To Become A Medical Scribe?
Jan 20, 2015

Has anybody left medical transcription at home to become a medical scribe?  I have an opportunity to do so but there aren't any scribes currently in my area and I don't know anyone who has worked as a scribe before.  The scribe position starting pay is almost double what I make as an MT per hour so it is very tempting, I just don't know much about it. ...

No Transcription Experience
May 25, 2010

After a few days of arguing back and forth with my CCM about feedback issues, audit keeping me from earning full pay, inconsistencies, I finally had a conference call with CCM and QA sup as well.  I was angry, admittedly, wanted and was demaning to be taken off 100% for silly "critical feedbacks" (doctor clearly says "if" and you typed "is" CRITICAL FEEDBACK???.)   Asked how in the world us MTs can be faulted for cruddy ASR and/or dictator problems! (no answer)  Asked if eith ...

Anyone Have Experience With Turn Around Time Transcription Co? Or Medrite XL Platform?
Jun 12, 2013

Hi, I recently spoke to someone from Turn Around Time Transcription.  I had found their ad on mtjobs.com.  Does anyone have any knowledge of this company?  They use the Medrite XL platform and the owner told me all the transcriptionists said it was an easy platform to work on, but then I looked it up and MTs were complaining about the line counts being so low.  Any info on either the company or the platform?  Thanks, Kathy ...
