I am thinking of working for Forensics, transcribing autopsy reports. Does anyone have any feedback. I have never transcribed autopsy reports, so I am not sure what to expect?

Appreciate your comments. Jo

Sorry I don't have any feedback but I would really like to know how to get into transcribing autopsies, as I love forensic science and would like to do something different than the basic 4. How do you find a company who does this or do you know of any? Good luck :0)

I would imagine it would be the same like transcribing any transcription? You would probably have to contact The Medical Examiner's Office in your city and ask who does their transcription? I am also thinking possibly even volunteering for a time, so that I can get an idea of how the current transcriptionist puts everything together? Just a thought? At this point, I just wanted some feedback to see if it was a long process or something that can be learned quickly? It probably depends on the dictator?

Did you try to find sample reports - Good Luck

Did you try doing a Google search for Sample Autopsy Report?

This one may be of interest to you.

Like everything else, it depends on who you work for.  If you work for a large (New York, Chicago, Los Angeles) Medical Examiner, you will probably end up with murders and suicides, which can get pretty gross because they can go into pretty stark details, and your report ends up in court so you really really have to proof closely.  Also, they dictate while they are doing the autopsy, so there are instrument clanging, saws ripping through bone, and water spraying constantly in the background, not to mention the other people coming and going.  Those places should definitely pay by the hour and not by the line or minute.

If you work for a small town, it will probably be pretty repetitious.  I worked in the Pathology Department at our local VA Hospital and 99% of the men died of alcoholic liver cirrhosis and heart disease – pretty much could type those in my sleep because the wording was pretty canned.  Unfortunately, because of that very fact, a lot of autopsy reports are Speech Recognition, so there are not a lot of jobs available anymore, from what I have heard.  But, definitely, if it is something you are interested in, give it a go.  Your area may have openings whereas another part of the county may not.

Good Luck

When I worked in-house at a local neurology office one of the docs was a state medical examiner as well. I typed his reports periodically and found them really interesting. I did not type the actual autopsy report, but did the reports from when the state medical examiner appeared on the scene of the deceased body. Most of them were suicides and accidental deaths. It was sort of like a short story, with specific details as to suicide notes, condition of body, etc. The terminology is easy once you get used to it. Once the medical examiner did his report then it was moved to the state deputy medical examiner's office where someone else did the actual typing of the autopsy. I enjoyed it, as I am a big fan of NCIS.

Thanks so much for your feedback. I am thinking like all specialties there is a learning curve?

I would hate to jump in feet first and not be able to accomplish the task?

I wanted to post it on this Forum to get some feedback from other MT's.

Thanks Again for your time!

The doc I typed the ME reports for also had 2 cadaver dogs, which were used in seach missions for people who were presumed dead under various circumstances, even murdered and presumed buried in a specific place. The dogs were trained to smell the scent of death and were used in various missions including water mishaps, etc. These reports were VERY interesting as well. You would type the efforts of the dogs on a daily basis or until the mission was complete and a body was found and/or they found no body and the mission was deemed complete. These dogs were called in to assist the state police as well. If this is something that is of interest to you - find out who in your state may own cadaver dogs and who types these reports. All in all the forensic field is a fascinating field in many different aspects.

Autopsie reports are VERY long reports. You could easily spend a full shift on 1 or 2 reports (can be 20 pages or more for each one.) The pathologist measures, weighs and describes each organ of the body in great detail. The key to being successful in transcribing any pathology report is to type exactly word for word everything the doctor dictates, including punctuation, even if you don't agree with it, and you'll do fine.

For several years I worked in the Path department of a teaching hospital transcribing autopsy reports. It wasn't a major city, but we certainly had our fair share of homicides. YES, they can be gruesome and depressing, particularly the child abuse cases.

During my tenure we had an ME step down, an interim ME, and then finally a permanent ME. When the ME wasn't available there was a stand-by pathologist to fill in. NEVER did I transcribe verbatim as the poster above said; I corrected punctuation errors and other mistakes (as someone else noted above, they are dictating while doing the autopsy, so yes they are multi-tasking and do mess up sometimes). Just like the pathologists, the ME was always appreciative of the work that I did and commended it. In my experience, doctors APPRECIATE your tweaking their reports a little because it makes for a more polished, professional report -- just so long as the context is not altered. Remember, if charges are pressed the ME will be testifying, so that report WILL wind up in court.

I wish you well, and if you decide to go into this I think you will find it to be absolutely fascinating work.

It is so amazing how much information is out there in reference to this topic.

It is like buying a car, you think your the only one who owns that make/model until you purchase it, and you notice it is everywhere. HAHA! Thanks again!

I work at home for a forensic pathologist (medical examiner). He uses templates and augments it with dictation. I LOVE it and find it very interesting. It is hard to get work with the coroner's offices in big cities, such as NY or LA. You might look for local autopsy services in your area. Good luck to you.

Do you get paid hourly or by the line? I am also trying to figure out what is reasonable for each? I worked for a psychologist for about nine years, which was also very interesting. Since his reports were very extensive (over six pages long) he insisted I charge him a higher line rate. He was such a nice person. He got to the point where he did more supervising of other employees (trying to grow his practice), so he did not need my services much after that.

Anyone Ever Done Forensic Transcription?

Any experience with working for a county coroner's office, doing autopsies?  Is it mind-numbing?  Extremely difficult?  Lots of detailed pathology?  Is it something like transcribing a narrative of the physical findings, more like a lab/pathology report, or a combination of both?   I'm wondering if someone who has years of experience as an acute-care hospital transcriptionist (all specialties and work types but no Rad or Path) might be able to do this type of ...

A Day Without Transcription?

It seems that everyone has negative things to say about how employers do not pay MTs what they're worth and how they offshore the easy stuff, but pile on the lousy ESL stuff on the transcriptionists in the States.
