Does anyone use strictly Autocorrect? - Fed up with Instant Text

Posted: Sep 14, 2012

I've had a dreadful time with IT Pro (it keeps crashing Word, sends an error message, sometimes recovers my document or I simply end up losing documents). I've both called and written to the company but they refuse to help me because I bought it used from someone and say they don't support the older versions anymore. Well....I'm through with them, their horrible product, and their nonexistent help. Thankfully I didn't purchase the newer version if this is how they treat people.

Also...a word of warning..if you sell your older copy to another person, they ask that you notify them. One would think they'd want that information so that they could offer support to the person purchasing it, but in reality, they want that information for just the opposite reason. They take the purchaser's name to simply refuse to help them. Dirty dealings if you ask me. I will never purchase anything from this company....ever. I also think making a "new" product with only a few changes and charging nearly full price to even those who have the previous version is outrageous. They certainly could just do updates and save everyone some money.

So, I have about 10,000 entries in IT, and would love to go back to autocorrect (which I used before), but I don't want to lose entries like I've heard you do after 7,000 entries or so. Has anyone found that their entries disappear or autocorrect crashes after awhile?

Sorry to vent...I'm just frustrated beyond belief...

If you would like a program that works just like.... - anon2

autocorrect, check into Shorthand 10 for Windows. It works just like autocorrect and does not lose entries. It is not free, but they do have a 30 day free trial, and after that, various ways of paying for it. I have a 1 user license for 1 year for 29.95 a year. I have IT, as well, hated it from the day I received it, and will NEVER use it again. So I totally understand where you are coming from! This is their website: www.pcshorthand.com

Shorthand is NOT like autocorrect - been there, tried that

[ In Reply To ..]
With shorthand it expands if you go back and add say ING to a word... then you get "campinguinal". It also expands things in instant messaging and anywhere you type.

I have used autocorrect except for a brief trial of shorthand and LOVE using just autocorrect. There is no need to spend money to do what autocorrect does just fine

You control what it expands..... - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
if you want to add an "ing" to a word, make an expansion for that, then you don't have to worry about it happening. (??) and it is SUPPOSED to be be able to be used in any program you type in...if you don't want your expander to be used in IM or anywhere else, turn it off...simple as that. gees. some people would complain if they were hung with a new rope.

FedUp, don't go back to AutoCorrect. It's to Shorthand and IT - like a typewriter is to a computer. SH is
[ In Reply To ..]
sweet and simple to use and very stable. I chose it over IT when they were both new because it was the one that was compatible with just about everything. IT caught up and is a good program, but so is Shorthand but simpler to use. SH is also sophisticated program with many features you can choose to use or not, but you're up and running with very little learning curve.

BTW, just imagine you type tpeath instead of tpeatth (the patient was admitted to the hospital). On AC you have to redo the entire abbreviation before it will expand. In professional-level programs, like SH, even if you've already spaced to the next word, you just back up to the error, retype the end of the abbreviation correctly, and it expands. That alone is reason to leave AC for the amateurs.
Very good points! - FedUp

I gave all of the rest that were suggested a trial yesterday and what I miss most from them is not having it docked like IT had the capability to be and some didn't have a way for me to import my 10,000 plus entries. Also, I keep finding myself hitting ; to drop in the phrase and I couldn't find one that would do so and not keep the ; at the end of the word.

As I've said ad nauseum...if IT would give me the silly patch, I'd be a happy camper, but apparently it's not going to happen.

I'll give SH a try...thank you for your suggestion. :)

Your Critique of IT isn't Fair - Morgan

I use IT Pro 7, like the program and find it has been very stable. They do have a bulleting board online for help and answer questions promptly. Your thinking that any company should offer you free IT support for a program you bought from a private party is ridiculous! Why should they pay their employees to help you for free?

Do you know how to back up your Auto Correct file so the first time your system crashes or you have to reistall Word you don't lose all your short forms?

Agree, I love IT, been using it for years - nm

Just because you love it does not mean that everybody has to. - anon

just as nobody has to love the same companies or has the same experiences with different companies. It is not a "fit all" application, and we are entitled to our opinions. just like you are.

Agree. Also love IT - MT

I bought it new last year and was able to load it on all three of my computers (work, personal, and laptop). I've never had any problems, error messages, crashing, etc. Before this, I've used AutoCorrect and the built-in expander with ExText. IT has boosted my productivity much more than either.

One of my favorite features is being able to set up different glossaries for different accounts/terminology and their different specs/addresses. For example, one for an oncology account in MA where hyphens are used and departments are capitalized; another for a neurology account in CA where numbers are expanded and dates are formatted the long way, etc.

She already stated that ...... - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
she is "fed up" with IT, so why try to convince her that you love it so she has to, as well?? she wanted opinions on something else, not IT. I did not like it either. It would never capital a new sentence, the glossaries were cumbersome and a pain in the behind to navigate through, particularly if working in a pool. you don't always get the same doc in a row, and I just hated it. I bought mine brand new, and never had any support either, other than "read the instructions." Anyone want to purchase mine?????

Morgan... - sm

I simply asked them to give me the link for the patch that came out to prevent the crashes...and yes, I DO believe they should continue to support their older versions in that way. I wasn't asking for anything more than that.

I do have a program that backs up my AC entries! Now..if I could figure out how to get my .glo files made into something that I can import to AC I'd be a happy camper! :)

You could give Shorthand a try - just rent it for $30 a year

[ In Reply To ..]
I love Shorthand. It is very flexible, and you control everything. It is easy to update etc. You could import your word expansions into it. Then, if you for some reason do not like it, you are only out $30 and a little startup time.

Shorthand doesn't "dock" though like IT - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
It works more like AC...so hidden until it's triggered unlike IT, which is always at the bottom. Right?

Shorthand has a window - that you can move

[ In Reply To ..]
around your screen or make disappear, and thus turn Shorthand off, using a simple keyboard shorthand. The window displays all the expansions that have the letters you are entering in their abbreviations, so you have a visual reminder if you can't remember the exact abbreviation associated with the expansion.

Also not a fan of IT - BTDT

[ In Reply To ..]
I can see the appeal of IT for a lot of people, but I have tried to work with it several times, both IT V and version 7. Couldn't do it.

I use Smartype and love it. Absolutely love it. Part of that affection is it is what I started out with so it's what I know, but I have tried other options, and I keep going back to this.

They've got a new version that works with newer versions of Word, so you might check that out.

try phase express - JB

[ In Reply To ..]
I also bought IT, but just can't get the hang of it, but I want to try it again.

I had downloaded a expander program called phase express before I had tried IT and I still use the phase express now. It was a free one, but it really works good for me. You don't do anything except start typing and then after a little while it will start coming up with expansion stuff.

Thank you all! Another question... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Thank you for your wonderful suggestions. I'm going to look into them today.

I wish that IT would just give me the patch for their product and then I would keep it and possibly upgrade in the future when I could afford to...

Anyway, does anyone know how to get my .glo files into my autocorrect? I can get them to .txt, but can't figure out how to proceed from there.

Autocorrect "limit" - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I've heard this too, but I'm up to over 15,000 entries in AC and never had a problem. I do frequently save copies of my normal.dot and MSO1033.acl (in my case) files to be on the safe side, though.

Question About Using AutoCorrect, Please
Sep 09, 2010

I was watching someone use an expander and when she misspelled her short form (she hit space and nothing happened), she backed up to the word and backed over the last misspelled 4 or so letters of a long string, and typed in some new ones, and the whole short form expanded the way she wanted.  Like txsdoisd was supposed to be txsdoerf, so the erf was backspaced over and replaced and the whole thing rolled out to, "Will AutoCorrect do this too?" :) Not really, but now I'm wondering if ...

For EScription, Is AutoCorrect Of Shorthand Better, If I Do

AutoCorrect seems much easier to deal with, but won't handle long canned text, and there is no "normals" program in eScription I can add long reports to.   I cannot tweak Shorthand to my liking; no matter how much I try, I still have to fight to get a lot of terms to expand.  It's really annoying.  But it can handle unlimited entries and long blocks of Text that AutoCorrect can't. ...
