Do you ever call in sick from your at-home job? - Just wondering

Posted: May 06, 2013

Just wondering, do any of you call in sick from your at-home job, when you are sick, or do you just work through it?  I never call in, as I feel it isn't really justified to call in, if I am already at home.  I was so sick this past Saturday, literally typing a job or two, going and throwing up, then coming back and typing all while having a fever of 103.  Hubby asked why I just didn't tell them I couldn't work, so I could go to bed, but I wouldn't.  I am already home and then I guess also with the industry the way it is, I don't want to lose my job that I happen to like, by calling out.

I don't know, just wondering if I'm the only one with my crazy idea system.

I do sometimes, depends how bad I am. - But, each situation is different. SM

If you feel your job is at risk, I wouldn't. I'm currently sick, have been for almost a week, but don't dare call in because that would be my 3rd strike in a rolling 3-month period and I'd be written up. This is my at-home hospital job.

For an IC position, it would depend how sick I was, with what, and my job security, how the managers are, etc. I've done it in the past, but always the underlying fear of losing the job.

I've worked through various respiratory ailments, including bilateral pneumonia. I've also worked through UTIs, though I didn't feel well. However, once I had a group B strep UTI where I was so sick that I couldn't sit up straight, so I called off. Another time I had a stomach bug where only the fetal position was feasible for me, so I called off. I've never had an issue with calling off in the world of MT. (Nursing was a whole other ball of wax, so I learned to pick and choose my "bad" illnesses.) I would have called off on Saturday if I had been as ill as you were, though.

my take on calling in - anon

Everyone has their own idea system, I don't think yours is crazy.

Working at home does afford the "luxury" of working through illnesses that you'd probably have to call in for if you worked out of the home. Being at home, the bathroom is more accessible in emergency situations. And it's a little easier to work through an illness sitting down than if you worked somewhere that required you to be ambulatory.

I guess my rule of thumb is that I call in if I'm so sick I feel my concentration is shot. I don't feel it's worthwhile to try to work if I'm so ill I find myself making a lot of mistakes while typing. I do call in for the occasional migraine. Last year I did work through the first few days of a particularly bad case of the flu but did have to call in when I was so miserable I felt like I was dying.

Fortunately, I am never sick on a work day - always on my day off if I feel ill, nm

.

I only call in if I am so sick that I just can't - budmt

sit up to work which is rare, but I did in the past couple of months for a couple of days when I had strep throat and a high fever. I think that is the first time I have called in sick in about 2 or 3 years.

If I am REALLY Sick - I Have

I don't call in sick unless I AM sick--whether as an MT or when I worked as a CNA then (later) a nurse. A week or so ago I felt a migraine coming on. I just took my time (well within TAT), sipped on room-temp cola to hold the nausea at bay, and hoped no more jobs would come in.

I Have - see msg pls

If I am really sick, my ears don't work right. Has something to do with the brain neurons or something---just doesn't all connect. Thankfully, that has only happened a small handful of times.

The worst is if I have a bad cough. Can't type when that happens.

I would say maybe one day out of every year or 2 I have to call in sick.

I never have done this per se, but for my own selfish reason: My precious PTO days ought to be for something special, not being sick, LOL. If I have horrible allergies with symptoms, I take a pill. If I have a fever, I take a pill. Then I sit there and type or edit and get it over with. I might be all bundled up and shivering, drinking hot tea all day long, or sweating and going through the kleenex boxes, or whatever, but I figure the germs cannot go through the modem or the phone lines so I am not "contagious" in that sense.

Of course! - SM - YD

I was floored by your question, OP. Why would already being at home make any difference whatsoever? If you're feeling sick, you're feeling sick. Makes no difference where you are.

Hope you are feeling much better today:)

So Sick Of People Saying Just Because We Work At Home, We Don't Really Work
Aug 31, 2010

I am so tired of people saying, "well, you work at home, so that's not really working."  or "you spend too much time on the computer."  or people coming over during working hours and saying, well you have time to visit, you work at home.  blah, blah, blah.  Let these people get the wrong medication because someone messed up their medical record or let them get screwed over in court because their record wasn't typed correctly, THEN will they realize that we do work?? ...

Why Do MTSO Advertise, But Never Call Or If They Do Call, Nothing.
Feb 20, 2012

I am tired and frustrated from applying and sending out resumes only to be ignored.  It is like a game with them, I think.  MedGarde even has an interview which has absolutely nothing to do with your skills or qualifications.  In fact it seems like psychological testing to see if you are mentally competent or something like that.  I swear I feel like a mouse that is being tested and run through a maze to see how well you perform, but even mice will get the prize or food event ...

Reporting Time Pay Aka On Call Or Call-in Pay
May 08, 2015

I am considering requesting this pay which (depending on the state) considers us to be on-call and must be paid for part of our shift if no work. I have had it up to here with Nuance and running out of work, adding more and more accounts and STILL no work. Got a second job and STILL being screwed by Nuance in the sense that I cannot rely on my first job (income wise), because when there is enough work they manage to screw my cpl with their lovely FIESA, then as soon as I have no errors the work ...

I'm So Sick Of My Job.
Jan 27, 2012

This was a wonderful company to work for at first and now we have new QA people and I can't stand my job. Everything has been changed after 12 years of doing it one way, and if I do it the way the doctors have dictated/still dictate for years I get an email about how I need to follow the new rules.  This is one QA person that has decided to change everything.  We enter a lot of information that we're not paid for, and are now no longer paid for headers, and forget about BOS a ...

I Am So Sick Of CPs.
Aug 27, 2012

Here I am, getting shuffled around in the 'cesspool', a dozen unfamilar accounts. You have your decent accounts with just the basics. Then, you have the CPs that are a long as novels and, if you miss something, you will hear about it, the fact it is in the CP and you shouldn't make such a mistake. I already spend so much time reading CPs, that I then get warnings that my production has fallen. So much for a consistent layout of CPs. I have to hunt for desired PE format, etc... ...

We have an account that is 100% QA.  So, so, so sick of the nitpicking "a" "the" crap.  If you put "the patient" they change it to "patient."  If you put "patient" they change it to "the patient."  Sick of slowing down to catch every little "a" and losing money by the second.  Screw it, I'm just gonna do my best and the MMEs can just have a field day with their petty changes.  ...

So Sick Of This
Jun 03, 2015

i know this has been mentioned in here, but what is up with whole sections of a note done by ASR being missing?  its bad enough that we get paid nothing to do this ASR crap, but when we have to actually transcribe whole sections we should be getting paid at the straight typing rate.  i'm so close to just wiping out these ASR dictations and just typing them but i don't know how to do that...to change it from ASR to regular.  i'm sure i'd get yelled at anyway. &n ...

What Is This About No Sick Time For MTs?
Oct 23, 2009

Okay any CTLs observing this board, please, please, please explain to me why an MT/ME cannot ask for sick time?   I have a doctor's appointment and the doctor/specialist WILL NOT make it for a day I am off.  So, I requested time off w/o pay for the day.   I don't have a problem making up the time, but I am already working constantly as it is to make up from a very serious illness I have and am trying to get well from.   The email we got was very vague ...

Makes Me Sick
Dec 15, 2009

I am currently awaiting a call from my boss about going salary for my position as an MT, and I have no patience , so just for fun I googled "how much salary does a medical transciptionist get paid" and I clicked on this link to one of those question/answer sites where someone asked about the average transcriptionist's salary, and what I read made me sick. This person wrote a huge answer about what is to be an MT and how they get paid and such.  This person is claiming essentially they ...

I Am So Sick Of Computers!
Oct 27, 2011

I know all the techies out there will say I must "get with the times", but I absolutely hate computers!  It isn't enough that you have to learn a new platform for each and every company you work for, but they think you should know all the regular "computer stuff" as well.  I don't use my computer for anything except work, email, and to look things up because I don't want to-- but everybody expects you to be a computer expert today, like it or not.  If they didn' ...

Im Sick Of You All Complaining
Jan 06, 2013

I tried to rally people about 5 or 6 years ago to stop this stupid outsourcing..I needed several of you from each state to organize groups so we could make our voices heard (not union) just groups that could contact legislators. I got about 10 people that were with me, the rest of you sat back and complained yet did NOTHING.. SICK Of Job Ads With Attitudes
