WORKING MAJOR HOLIDAYS - fastfingers50

Posted: Nov 07, 2014

Now that the holiday season is upon us many MLSs and MTs are required to work Thanksgiving and/or Christmas Day, I am wondering if coders are doing the same? Thinking of making a career change.

Not required for me - sm

I get all the major holidays off with a couple "non-major" holidays that I can work if I want to. It sure is nice being paid a full day for all holidays/PTO, unlike when I was an MT where they somehow figured out how to pay me the least amount of money possible, if at all, for any time off.

No holidays or weekends required ... EDITED - Happy Coder

No need to work holidays, major or minor, and they are paid. We get all 11 of them, anD if they fall on a weekend or day we would not normally work, we get a weekday off to compensate. If we did have to work them, we get double or triple pay or something.

No need to work weekends, either. There is a lot of overtime available, though.

We also get between 13 and 26 paid days off per year, plus 13 days sick leave.

And time-off awards.

Thank you for asking.

A post further down reminded me ... we often get to leave early after working a half day on Christmas and New Year's Eves, and we get bonuses.

We also get paid well, have great benefits, and have a tuition reimbursement program and free CEUs.

Work no holidays - off and paid nm

Thank you for your responses. What about coders working from home? Are they working on holidays? Just have a feeling reports we have had to produce just sit there until the next work day.

Is that why you asked??? - SM

[ In Reply To ..]
Did you ask about holidays to see if we worked to code the reports you had to do?

If so, you have the wrong idea about our work, and about the purpose of yours.

We are not sitting around waiting for you to type a report so we can code it. Your work goes on the chart first for patient care. That is why you work holidays and weekends around the clock ... for patient care. Not for us.

If you are typing acute care, we don't code, or complete the coding, until after discharge.

So, no, the reports you produce on holidays do not just sit there waiting for us ... they go on the chart.

There are time limits for getting reports on the chart. Varies by type of report. That has nothing to do with coding.

That was part of the reason. Just felt upset. In order to get the Christmas Holiday off, the request had to be made over 2 months in advance, plus have enough PTO built up! We do not get any paid time off for holidays.
I lost sight of the bigger picture - patient care. Thanks for reminding me. Working in acute care medical transcription has been very interesting, but I don't believe it's worth missing so many holidays with my family.
I agree, but we do not cause that. - Plz don't blame us!!!

Being forced to work every holiday is no fun, and I agree that you have grounds for complaint, especially when you sit there with NJA. That was one of the things that convinced me to get out of MT.

Please don't blame coders for your need to work weekends and holidays. Please don't blame us for anything ... having been on both sides of the fence, I can say that it isn't us!

new coder w/all holidays off with pay - anon

I recently quit Nuisance after passing my certification tests. I feel like I suffered PTSD from this place!! Worked ALL holidays, asked but always denied getting them off, only to sit with NJA while the rest of my family was at the family gathering about an hour away. Very lonely and I always ran out of work and would not make hardly any extra money. Fast forward to now, work 8 to 4:30 Mon-Fri, every weekend off, they treat us great and when we meet goals we get bonuses (since May we have met goals every month). They cater meals for us to thank us, and they just told us we can work 1/2 day Christmas eve and New Years Eve and they will pay us for the entire day. I feel like I am dreaming!! I do have to say that some people have trouble getting the first job, I got lucky. With ICD-10 coming though, it may level the playing field. There is already off shoring with this job as well, just hoping it will last the next 8 years or so until I retire. Good luck, I feel for you and have many friends still working for N.

How long did you go to school for this. Do you work at home? Sounds like you work in an office. Sounds like a good choice you made.

I spent 18 months while working full time as an MT through Andrews, although it can be done in 12 months, I just had a lot of other issues going on. Best decision for me ever...some do get remote jobs right out of school but it is harder. I got an office job and I love it! Of course, your satisfaction would depend on how well managed your office is, but mine is awesome, very little office politics or garbage.

MModal does not allow their coders or coding students to work holidays - hope that helps

why not? - ?

why would they not be "allowed" to work holidays?

Coders are corporate employees and corporate employees - do not work holidays.

I Am Not Working Any More Holidays!
Oct 23, 2010

Got denied for Thanksgiving request.  I have put my life on hold for this company for 15 years.  I have missed Christmases, Thanksgivings, family functions and fireworks and for what? To sit at my desk and wait for the work to trickle in? Or no jobs at all.    I am not working another single holiday for this company. Let the Indians work them. I am not even sending in a request for them; I am just going on with my plans. What are they gonna do, send my work to India? Fi ...

Working Holidays As An Employee (sm)
Oct 05, 2010

I have never been "required" to work holidays as a SE or IC, so I am wondering how the work loads are when you are an employee.  I was recently offered a PT job as an employee, but I was told if I was scheduled to work, I would have to work.  Well this year would have been both Thanksgiving and Christmas, which would really put a damper on my family gatherings.  Checking in every few hours would not be a problem, but actually missing Thanksgiving dinner at my mom's would be d ...

Hypocracy Of MTs Working On Holidays
Jan 02, 2012

Dictator apologized to the family for not spending more time with them when they found out a young loved one had terminal cancer. 12/24 visit. I seriously had to get up and walk around and cry before I could finish the report. My best friend was diagnosed with the same disease before Thanksgiving last year. Her demise was inevitable, but what was left of her quality of life was compromised by the lack of health care personnel, including her PCP, during to the holidays. I find it ironic that ...

Question About Working Holidays...
May 28, 2012

If you run out of work for over 15 minutes, you're supposed to fill out a ticket & take the rest of the day off, without even checking to see if work comes in later?  Won't they be mad that you didn't check back since it's a holiday?  But then on the other hand, if they've made you clock out & take PTO instead, then I guess you couldn't check back even if you wanted to...?  I don't really understand the point in making everyone work holid ...

* Imedx And Major, Major Changes In 2 Weeks, Probably
Feb 14, 2015

Okay, let's sum it up: 1. Imedx hid information on losing more than one account for months, this is a fact. 2. Number one above is confirmed by Imedx having an acct going to EPIC, and a few days later 3 accounts that we "do not have access to anymore" as stated by manager. 3. Number two above did not say we lost, or Nuance took back, etc., just "no access." 4. In other words, work shifted to cheaper folks, we get that. 5. Lack of any emails in 2 weeks regarding what is going on is abso ...

Why Do They Always Do This Right Before The Holidays?
Nov 24, 2009

Just got word from the hospital where my full-time coding job is that we will be laying off and/or terminating employees, eliminating positions and changing others.  Why, oh why, do companies always do this around the holiday time? It gets more and more sad and more frightening daily, doesn't it, seeing more and more good people out of work and such a lack of prospects for employment.   ...

Crappy Holidays To Us All
Sep 30, 2010

Just got the email today that effective 10/01/2010, my MTSO (whom I will not name) will no longer be paying holiday pay (aka 1.5 cpl) for any holidays anymore b/c of "the economy." R U *** kidding me? First of all, I thought that the recession was officially over in 2009, but I could be mistaken. Secondly, I know holiday pay and OT and all that is a "perk" and not required by law to pay us, but yet they expect us MTs, er me, to work all major holidays for the same crappy cpl as always ...

Never Got So Much As A Happy Holidays From The Q.
Jan 06, 2011

I don't need some gift (that wasn't worth the money they paid postage on). It just would have been nice to at least send out a company email wishing us a happy holidays. That would have only cost them the money it would have taken some salaried person to type it up and sned it out which is really nothing as that person would have been paid whether they did that or not. Guess 'cause we're an Indian company and that is not one of their holidays. What would have been appreci ...

Happy Holidays Everybody!
Dec 19, 2012

Just wanted to say Happy Holidays to everybody and hope they have a great time and a great holiday! This was our first time decorating and shopping as well as sending cards and stuff in over 7 years due to severe pain and financial issues. It feels so good to do normal things during the holiday this year, although it took numerous doctors appointments to do so. I felt so good when my cousin emailed me that my grandma was searching her mailbox everyday and nobody had sent a card yet, but me... s ...
