Beware of the time when the term "coder" gets - changed to "codist". Downward spiral.

Posted: May 05, 2013

Whenever the suffix "ist" gets added to a job title, it means the field has been feminized and undervalued.  I'm not saying this WILL happen, but it would be amusing.

Word play - Silly me

[ In Reply To ..]
Transcriber refers to a machine, not a person. The word "transcriptioner" is non-existent, so the word ending fits. Personally, I like being referred to as a medical language specialist or a health care documentation specialist. What...codist, coderist? I'm being silly, but abstractist or abstractionist instead of abstractor? I don't think the job title is going to be changed, but perhaps some of the duties or maybe the job description.

The dictation machine that got named a "transcriber" - (by AHDI, I believe) does not transcribe. -

[ In Reply To ..]
It records, and it plays back. The human being operating it is the transcriber.

You could probably argue that VR is now a "transcriber", because it does at least attempt to transcribe, though there are differing views on that, as well.

It was about the time AHDI decided to lengthen and feminize the medical transcriber's job title that things began to head south in a big way.

A coder's got to learn to read between the lines, in more ways than just in the workplace.

Logical fallacy - Tired student

[ In Reply To ..]
Your post contains a logical fallacy in that it relies on semantics for a weak counterpoint.

The fallacy of a false attribution occurs when someone appeals to an irrelevant, unqualified, unidentified, biased or fabricated source in support of an argument.

"A coder's got to learn to read between the lines, in more ways than just in the workplace."

Oh trust me, we can read between the lines.

I'd rather hear about how you feel AHDI contributed to the demise of MT, along with how you feel more of the same could be prevented in other professions. Preferably without insults to our intelligence or vague warnings. Tell us what you KNOW. Back it up. And for the love of Pete, lighten up!

Yeah, that was what did it . . .going from "secretary" to "MT" - Cue the ominous music NM

Interesting that you think that "would be amusing." Why would you wish harm to others for your own amusement?

What prompted that negativity? It is pretty much unfounded.

MTs were transcriptionISTS from the beginning. The ending has absolutely nothing to do with a downslide in status.

Concert pianIST, opthalmologIST, political analyST, informaticIST . . . where is the downturn there?

You aren't a coder or you wouldn't be saying something like that. The question now is why you felt a need to express such negativity about others' occupations.

cawCAW cawCAW THE END IS NEAR!!!!!!! - Linguist

Fatalist? Pessimist? Fabulist? Defeatist?

Now THAT is funny. lol

BTW, Downward Spiral, your post is sexist.

Name one field, not including transcription, that can support your theory.

LOOK IN THE MIRROR - WWW

[ In Reply To ..]
As a transcriptionist for twenty years, I can tell you that the death knell for transcription has not been voice recognition. There ARE still editing jobs, and there always will be. It isn't offshoring either. It isn't even these crazy schools that offer students big dollars and deliver nothing. It is every transcriptionist that says "Sure, I'll take 4 cpl if I just get to work from home." So, any of us who are willing to grovel for jobs and make next to nothing just to work from home need to look in the mirror. We are not just selling ourselves short -- we are ruining this once respected job. Furthermore, most of us are "editors" now, not "edists". The job title relates to what we do, not to whether we are male or female. I'm sure scientists and chemists everywhere are shaking in their lab coats.

Man, you all sure do take yourselves way too seriously. - BTW, what youre describing as -

[ In Reply To ..]
the death knell for MT ("Sure, I'll work for 4 cpl if I just get to work from home") can, and most likely WILL, happen to coding once the middleman gets his or her greedy little hands on the profession. It's happening already.

If it can be done on a computer, if it is largely a female field, and if it cufrrently pays an appropriate wage for the amount of schooling required to do it, then you can pretty much count on the overpowering greed of the health care industry to find a way to get it out from under their roof, and outsourced to the lowest bidder.

And that's where the "I'll work for 4cpl" people will come out of the woodwork, especially when you consider that transcription, and even transcription editing, will likely be extinct in this country in as many years as most of us can count on half of one hand.

What? sm - Tired student who had better get back to studying

First of all, I seriously doubt that you are an MT. The misspellings and grammatical errors in your post sort of make me want to stab myself in the eye, starting with "youre".

Also, your post doesn't make much sense. I hope that you are either in the middle of editing it or enjoying some nice adult beverages. Otherwise, your post is very confusing. Cheers!

There is no arguing with that kind of illogic.

Half of one hand - Silly me
[ In Reply To ..]
Would that be two-and-a-half fingers?

I'm going to have to disagree with you - WWW

[ In Reply To ..]
With regards to your comment that even transcription editing will become extinct -- it is obvious to me you are not doing difficult transcription, or you would not think that. Speech recognition will never be able to think, so it will never replace the editor who realizes a doctor used "hematemesis" when he actually meant "hemoptysis". Speech recognition will never pull up that patient's chart and dig through the history to find out for sure that the patient was in fact spitting up blood and not vomiting blood. This is what I mean by quality transcription, and what I find so offensive by "transcriptionists" (and I use that term loosely), who put out garbage just so that they can earn a bigger check. Some of us were transcriptionists before the profession was dumbed down.

As far as coding, I feel that there will be some job contraction, but there will also be coders left working. Coding directly affects the money brought in, so I tend to think the "overpowering greed" you describe is actually on the coder's side.

Oh, and I do realize you are being a troll and don't really care one way or the other. But I just wanted to post something so that other people, transcriptionists and coders, don't read your message and think it is true.

Oh and IF you ARE a transcriptionist . . . - WWW

[ In Reply To ..]
And you DO NOT take yourself and your job seriously -- please get out of the profession. I am ashamed of and for you.
LOL - Go ahead and be ashamed of/for me. You'll - be ashamed of yourself soon enough.
[ In Reply To ..]
That old adage about being doomed to repeat history would apply here.

But, que sera - just go on believing you're an invincible part of a bulletproof career, if that's what floats your boat.
What? - smh
[ In Reply To ..]
Who are you having this imaginary, nasty conversation with?

Bulletproof? Huh?

I swear, sometimes this place reads like someone left it open at rehab or something.

I think you mean "ess" not "ist" - is that you Nick?

[ In Reply To ..]
You're talking about the suffix ess, as in "waitress," and "stewardess." It's not the same suffix as ist, which is applied to economists, scientists, pharmacists, dentists, geologist, well the list goes on and on, but those highly respected careers, held by both sexes, are not in danger of being phased out by greedy middlemen taking advantage of women.

I don't think it's Nick - mt2

[ In Reply To ..]
Nick actually has a brain, from what I've read of his posts, and can formulate a logical argument. Sounds more like where's-my-job to me.

Does Being A Long-time MT Make You More Valuable If You Become A Coder?
Mar 28, 2010

So if someone has been an MT for 10 years and then moves onto coding, does that make them more valuable to employers? Also do you recommend the Andrews School over the rest?  I am pretty sure I am going to do this but am wondering if I should sit in college class and do all of this or go with the Andrews School. Is there really a PLUS to taking the classes on campus in a classroom setting?  Thanks! ...

Beware ANP
Sep 10, 2012

I recently responded to an ad on Craig's List for an MT medical editor because I'm interested in getting into that. I got a test and a bunch of info back from a Larry Perrone of ANP Transcription. Fortunately I googled ANP before doing anything and there are piles of complaints here and at other sites about them not paying MTs. I sent Mr. Perrone some samples of comments MTs wrote about their habit of not paying us and told him I won't be working for them. So beware! I guess ...
