The little "trinkets" some of you have received is extremely comical and a so-called slap in the face to some, but some may view it as an actual good gesture, although I do not agree. When I worked at neurology they used to always acknowledge MT week with flowers or a $25 gift card to our local mall, but when they got a new office manager he combined Secretary's Week and MT Week into one. My coworker and I got acknowledged one year on Secretary's Week - now that is a slap in the face, although I did enjoy the flowers it would have been nicer to be acknowledged during the week intended to receive recognition, so as to separate us and make us feel "special." With that said - one of the doctors in that office used to refer to us as "typist." We set him straight and after that he had more appreciation for us. After all he went to medical school and would not have wanted to be considered anything but a doctor. I am baffled as to why these companies would even waste a stamp on such a gift in which it probably cost more to mail it than to buy it. Did they actually think they would get good reviews on MTStars??? Now they are probably thinking how ungrateful everyone is in their pee brains. I wonder if TLs or ROMs got recognized for MT week and what their gift of appreciation was.
Most of the trinkets likely cost more to mail than - to buy, let alone produce. (sm)

I, personally, could have used the STAMP more than I could ever use the worthless trinket that was sent.

[ In Reply To ..]it boils down to who they put in charge of choosing what is an appropriate gift of appreciation. They have no taste or imagination. All of us struggle with choosing appropriate gifts for our friends and family during the holidays on a cramped budget. But if you use a little imagination and put some REAL thought into it, you can come up with things that are wonderful. These people show a complete lack of taste, thought, imagination, and should be ashamed. I don't care what title we have, if you are going to make to effort to appreciate someone, then at least MAKE AN EFFORT. It doesn't have to cost a bundle. Just something that is appropriate. I can't imagine a group sitting around a table and all agreeing on some of this stuff that was sent out. Blows my mind!

I think a lot of the problem is that many of these companies aren't run by someone who has any experience in MT. So they can't (and don't) really appreciate what MT really is and the knowledge and skills that it takes.
I know that my first thought when I got this "MT week email" was that what the company probably appreciates is that we (the MTs) are willing to take all these pay cuts and make less money so the company can make more.
If they really don't think that it takes specialized skills and knowledge to do this job, I wish they'd just go ahead and start hiring the man off the street to do it. It's getting to the point now where I can go work for my local Wal-Mart or Starbucks for what I'm making by being an MT.

We are having a fun week too with daily emails for scavenger hunts and contests and daily drawings for big prizes, but for each of us to get something, not so much. I do enjoy the daily link to the "make you laugh today" joke or video of the day though. But there are only 4 big prizes to give away and you gotta work for them. I would be happy with a paid day off (not using PTO) or a gift card at least.

Good grief. I did not change the way I edit. It so depends on how many commas they think you should have. Do you think the MTSOs cut their rates to their clients who are now using VR just as they have cut their MTs rates? Seems that some MTSOs are scrambling for some reason to cut everyone's pay down (even their MT pay, not just ME pay). How does one go about collecting money from a small MTSO who still owes me $1,049 for transcription I had done for them? I quit working for them in May 2009 when I hadn't received payment. It seems whenever I go to the doctor we get to talking about my profession, mainly because I am speak to them on their level (with medical terms, etc) because they are amazed that I am so informed.
