I am currently per-diem with a company that requires per-diems to work 2 holidays a year and we have to phone in to beg for work (0.7 cpl) BUT we are not included in any bonuses or the holiday gift card because we are only per-diems.  We make money for the company and are reimbursed at a pauper's rate with no other benefits but we aren't even included in a tiny holiday gift card.  Feels like a huge slap in the face.  Is it even legal to require a "per-diem" with no guarantee of work or benefits to work holidays or be fired?

Why do you do this to yourself. Dont give me bills, kids etc. - There are other places. Nobody SM

are being treated badly too. They would give me the work but they have to answer to the main supervisor's henchwoman who is slowly but surely pushing the supervisors out. Get this....regular employees get a ton of earned time off but you cannot take more than 1 week vacation in the summer until you have worked for the company for 10 years AND a coworker had her sister-in-law die this past summer and she was given a hard time about taking the day of the funeral off and was asked to make up the time THAT DAY. MT's so need a union to fight this stuff. Thanks for your support. Its nice to know that I'm not wrong for feeling like I'm being mistreated.

will be where questionable behaviour will be found. They know, as women, most of us are used to letting hubby do the money thing. And also, many women feel they are just lucky to have a job. But if we insist on knowing how we are paid, what do you think would happen. And they cannot refuse to explain it. It is your RIGHT to know how you are paid, how your lines are calculated and how your paycheck is arrived at.

afford to (not a primary wage earner) needs to investigate the pay at MTSOs like this. You need to know exactly how you are paid and if it is not on the up and up, do something. Arent there legal associations that help for little or no up front money? Until we start standing up for ourselves, why should the MTSO treat us any better?

in an economy like this where everyone is just thankful to be working even if they are mistreated. I asked my day supervisor for a reference and she had me use her home number because she was afraid of them finding out she was willing to help me. Its like that for everyone. There are so many more of us then them but it will take a collective standing up to change anything and everyone I've talked to is too afraid to be out of a job. I hope my new company works out better. The pay and schedule is better. Just hoping for good dictators and a good platform. Change is hard for me so this will not be easy...but then nothing worthwhile is.

The reason companies "get away with it" and *it* being subjective is because MTs stay hired on. Staying tells them it's okay.

that they have had their human resources people ensure that everything is legal and that it is because there is no "regular schedule" (I have to ask every day for work) but that it is legal for them to require 2 holidays a year because it is not a "set schedule". I think this must be illegal though, I just don't see how it can't be.

to work holidays. They called me when they had extra work, period. If I could do it I would. I did not expect any bonuses or gift cards, etc. I would presume it is not legal to attach conditions, but if you signed a contract for IC with them with these conditions then, yes, I would say it is legal as you accepted their terms. If you did not sign anything to that effect then, no, I would say it is not legal. You are underpaid as well, I was doing per diem for 0.10 cpl. I was paid for the inconvenience of no notice from them of needing me to work and for helping them clean up backlogs of work. I don't do work for them anymore as it dried up but contact them now and then so if anything permanent should ever open up they will hopefully call me. It was a good place with good pay, smaller MTSO. I only work for small(er) companies as I do not want all the *ELL most of you go thru with horrid ESLs, no work, pool work, pages of account rules/specifics, QA limits,etc. I have BTDT with my first acute care job years ago. Good per diem jobs are out there, just not so easy to find is all. I would tell them, no I won't commit to 2 holiday's and if you don't like it then I guess we are not a good fit, goodbye. I would stop begging them for work and move on.

I am a new grad and had a phone screen with MedQuist last week. They seemed all gung-ho about hiring me until the phone screen. After that I got an email that said my background did not match their needs. I'm wondering what I did to change things. The only thing I can think of is that I said part time. I just can't understand it.  For the past 2 weeks my line counts have been slowly dropping below the 1200 daily quota.  Feeling the need to make up some lines, I crammed the work yesterday, going as fast as I can, still maintaining quality, proof reading each document, etc.  I was excited to see how much I did.  A measly 1400 lines.  What the?  It was about 1/3 straight typing, 2/3 ASR.  Even when on 100% straight typing I used to do 200+ lines p ...

I've recently been contacted to test with a company and was told what they pay during their training period but not once you are released to send work directly to the client.  Upon asking (for a low/high range) I was told I have to test first.  I've been this route before only to have wasted my time being offered something like 6 or 7 cpl for an IC position.  Am I really out of line wanting to know what I might be getting into before taking the time to test? ...

A few days ago I got back a warning message from my company stating that the doc had keyed in the wrong medical record number, but did say that patient's correct name. By forcing us to claim shifts from the swap board when we run out, aren't they getting around the "engaged to wait" rule, and thereby not having to pay us to work around the clock?
