I've heard something recently about this and just wondering if it is a good parallel to MTing and if the pay is better?

Like 6 years ago I heard that coding was the way to go. You can get a course in this at the community colleges, but also will there be a job? I heard it paid well, but any time a nondirect contact worker in a hospital is making money, they find ways to eliminate it to save money. They do need the insurance people in the business offices because that has to be done first before they get paid. If you like all the rules of insurance...go for it. Coder? I was thinking of that myself. What is there after transciption?

Hospitals depend on getting the coding done correctly, by credentialed coders, because that's what determines how much money they make.

Credentials mean everything with coding. They aren't going to want to touch you without them, so you really need to check to see just how many of those community college graduates can pass a credentials test, not just a CPC, but both CPC and CCS. If most of their graduates aren't taking and passing those tests, it doesn't matter how cheap the course is or how short it is, you are wasting your time, effort, and money.

There's a lot of information on the Coding section here that talks about the importance of credentials and how most graduates of most courses are not able to pass the important credentials tests, (1) CCS; (2) CPC.

Evidently you go through the patient's records and provide a summary. Used in the courts, etc. However, from what I am seeing RNs are doing them but I would think MTs could too.

are doing them and they are HORRIBLE at it! They mispronounce every day med terms, butcher medications, and have no clue what goes into a record summary. They dictate things into the record that have nothing to do with the case! They need to stick to nursing and stay out of our area of expertise. I'm not going to apply for a nursing position because I "think" I can do that with my background in the medical arena - they need to do the same. They are comparable to interns or maybe a little worse.

If you are going to do RR, charge by the hour and charge a hefty amount. It is a very tedious, time-consuming gig. Some docs want you to color-code tab and group certain reports, studies and what-not together so they just read and dictate without really having to do much else, except review films if there are some.

These are usually RNs who are trained with a legal background. There is an actual title -- and I forget what that is at the moment -- but they are taught the key things to look for with regard to PI, insurance, and disability cases, etc., in order to extract that information which is needed for court cases. I'm a former "MT-turned-paralegal" and in my local area alot of law firms use these types of RNs in their litigation practices.

A local hospital is hiring a medical records tech. For experience, all they ask is basic computer experience, knowledge of medical terminology, and a h.s. diploma. Hmmmmm...I've had the terminology certificate for a year, plus a completion certificate for MT and several specialty certs, and I passed the RMT exam. I would advise EVERYONE to get a copy of their medical records and view them. I had to get copies from my PCP (cost me $15.00, but worth it), and I found soooo many mistakes. Some I know were the MT's, but most were the doctor's mistakes. For instance, they had under my family history in the last year of mother having diabetes. What is electronic medical records? Goodwill is teaching a 3 month class starting soon. I have heard about a government mandated thing that doctors have to go electronic by Jan. 2014, but not much more than that. I know someone could shed some light. With HIPAA regulations tightening on who can get a carbon copy of a patient's medical record, MTs should NOT have the responsibility of sending any carbon copies at all. My husband's father had a brain tumor many years ago (back when I first started dating him) and had surgery. I have heard and read that Obama is really pushing the EMR, and by the year 2014, he wants all hospitals/clinics to implement this or else be taxed. He also is supposed to be offering grants and incentives if they do also. The family practice I go to is using this. The doctor asks questions and constantly inputs into his PC tablet as we speak. Its not looking good for the MT field. Anyone else worried? I worked on a project transferring hospital charts from Legacy to Epic. Once they were done with using us for that project, we were let go with no notice.
