I always thought it was "she died of cancer" but "she is alive and sufferes from diabetes"

I continually have it dictated as she died from cancer. Is there an actual "rule" to this, especially if you are typing verbatim?

I would flag something like this,one way or the other, either with a post-it note or a blank on the spot. If you have no protocol in place for these things, you really need to ask.

The other possibility: She may have an odd dictating style and she is saying something else you're missing.

OR, she's an ESL and gets her stuff mixed up. She may be confused with her tenses: She may be meaning she is dying of cancer, as opposed to died of cancer.

It's really hard to know without knowing the dictator, but someone you report to should be able to give you rules on how to handle those situations.

I think she's referring to whether she should use the word "of" or "from" not the tenses as in past or present. It is correct to say "dying of cancer" rather than "dying from cancer" (Webster's dictionary has good examples for the use of the word "of"). However, if you are working for an MTSO, make sure this is one of those things you are "allowed" to edit. Sometimes, even though you are correct, these places dig their heels in and stick with the verbatim. JOS

I have no idea what the posters below are talking about. It has nothing to do with account specifics, it has nothing to do with past or present tense. It does not require editing.

Both are acceptable:

He died of cancer.
He died from cancer.

I can't figure out what I did with my AAMT BOS but I used to have a sticker on my key board stating die of suffer from...that I wrote down from either this board many years ago or from the AAMT BOS, so I wanted to check to see if that was still something followed or if this late in the game, verbatim is now just verbatim

Verbatim is just verbatim. Transcribe what the dictator says. Whether died from or died of, the meaning is crystal clear. At the measly line rates we are paid, we don't have time to quibble.

I SO AGREE...this group pays less than any other client, has more issues and I am to the point after 22+ years of just saying okay verbatim is verbatim or it isn't, change have it both ways...don't say AND THIS IS TO BE DONE VERBATIM but change all the bad or wrong things dictated...

Is there a way in AutoCorrect (Word 2010) to change a comma to a period and then cap the next word to make VR go a little faster? The platform at my old company did this automatically, but MS Word does not : ( This is so frustrating having to change from a comma to a period (or vice versa)--which as you all know happens constantly...and then change the next word to be capitalized (or uncapped)....my wrists are killing me, not to mention it takes so much TIME.....
