diabetic liponecrosis - Lauri

Posted: Jul 13, 2011

Has anyone heard of diabetic liponecrosis? I'm not sure I'm hearing the doctor right. The patient has had painful nodules removed from her buttocks and now she has a recurrence of "diabetic liponecrosis."

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!!

There are many websites for NLD. You might find it matches what your doctor is describing.

There are different ways of saying the same thing. 30 years ago my doctor dictated lipid diabeticorum and his description matched the NLD in my dictionary. It may or may not be the same thing as your diabetic liponecrosis. But we should always type it as dictated.

Wikipedia does have an extensive List of Cutaneous Conditions which may help you at some point. There is also a tremendous amount of other medical information with many "Lists of." I've found terms there I couldn't locate anywhere else because I wasn't spelling it correctly. I always verify that term with other websites before I use it and so far Wikipedia has never been wrong. But like all the other websites, Wikipedia can make mistakes and does not have everything.

NLD is listed on NIH PubMed along with lipoidica diabeticorum, but diabetic liponecrosis is not listed. That may be a new way of describing an old condition. Sometimes names of medical conditions change over the years as research shows a more accurate picture of the disease process. And of course, they are always discovering new conditions.

Does the patient have diabetes? Does she inject insulin? He could be talking about diabetic lipohypertrophy (swelling in the fatty tissue around injection sites that can harden).

Diabetic liponecrosis is correct. - sweetgirlsmom

I looked at Google books (books.google.com). The search term of diabetic liponecrosis showed nothing. The search term of liponecrosis showed numerous books using that term. One says "liponecrosis is the saponification of fat." One says mesenteric liponecrosis. Two say pancreatic liponecrosis.

One is called "Medical journal: Volume 91, Issues 1-6." It doesn't give the actual name but has these sentences. "The disease is often accompanied by diabetes. The morphological picture of the disease, corresponding to chronic ... centers in the parenchyma, pancreatic liponecrosis, pseudocysts with necrotic masses and centers of calcifications."

Unfortunately, they only give a few sentences and not the whole article. We know the pancreas makes insulin and insufficient insulin causes diabetes. I think its safe to use diabetic liponecrosis.

I also found liponecrosis microcystica calcificans, liponecrosis macrocystica calcificans, and relapsing focal liponecrosis on various websites. That plus the numerous books on Google show that liponecrosis is an actual term. We can type it when it is dictated.

Unfamiliar Diabetic Term
Apr 21, 2011

In the diagnosis section of the consultation report, the doctor dictates: "Uncontrolled hyperglycemia/HH and K." My first thought would be hemoglobin and hematocrit and potassium, but he doesn't give me enough information in the rest of the report to be certain of this.  The only values he gives are a blood sugar of 730 and a hemoglobin of 14.7.  Any thoughts on this? ...
