combining form for "above" pectoral(is) - SM - je suis MT

Posted: Apr 06, 2011

MD is dictating on a pacemaker.  He says what sounds "suprapectoral".  Can't find a credible reference for that or "superopectoral".

I feel like there's a little bell ringing in the back of my mind about this but it's not loud enough to lead me to the right spot:(

Thanks for any/all help :)

Suprapectoral is correct...nm - GT

If you have a reference (i.e., Stedman's or Dorland's) that you could share that would be great:)

Because of...sm - GT

the ever-changing nature of the medical field, you won't find every term in a reference book, especially with doctors who make up their own words on a whim. Almost any word can be created with a prefix such as supra, infra, etc. I've done quite a few pacemaker interrogations and have heard this term used. : )
Doctors don't make up words. - sweetgirlsmom

Doctors complete medical school, internship and residency. They read medical journals which describe new findings made by doctors and scientists. They attend medical conferences and educational programs to increase their skills. They work with other doctors and share their knowledge. Medical science grows rapidly and their learning never ends. We should respect their education and experience.

All of the new developments in medicine need words to describe them so people understand what is being said. It would be awkward to say "That disease caused by some kind of bug that people get during sex which makes people sick and they die." Its much easier to say HIV and AIDS. They were unheard of prior to the 1980's, and now with education and repeated use we know their meaning and accept them as valid. Words that doctors "make up on a whim" are simply new words that MTs are hearing for the first time and are not in a reference book yet. Thousands of medical words never make it into the books that MTs use, but they are known by doctors and used in their dictation.

One time a doctor said "bug juice" and I thought it was slang. It is an antibiotic solution used in the operating rooms of that hospital. They make it up themselves and it is approved by the chief of surgery. It has no brand name since it is not marketed by a company. But it kills bugs (bacteria) so they call it bug juice. Medical Records confirmed this and instructed the MTs to type it in the reports.

There are a million medical terms. We will never hear them all or know the origins of all the ones we do hear. Every word is used by the doctors because it means something. Their reports are examined by medical committees and review boards, and read in court when they are sued. They are legally responsible for their choice of words and know they must be correct.

Our job is to give the doctors an accurate spelling of their words. Treatment decisions are influenced by their reports. Would you want to receive medical therapy or surgery when the wrong words are in your chart because an MT decided the doctor was making words up and typed different ones? We need to trust the doctors' judgment.

W-9 Form
Jan 08, 2014

I worked as an IC transcriptionist in 2013 for approximately 4 months.   The company sent a W-9 form and is requesting it be signed and sent back.  I did not make a total of $600.00 when I was working for them, which I've understood from others that if you make less than $600.00 you don't need to send in a W-9 form.  Can someone clarify on this? Thanks so much.   ...

My W2 Form Just Sent Me Into A Major Funk!
Jan 26, 2011

Now, I already knew I didn't do well financially this year.  It was evident every time I had to "borrow" money from my retirement account to pay the bills each month.  But, I just received my W2 form, and discovered I did even worse than I thought I did!  Working an average of 6 full days a week, 10-12 hours a day, with only 3 days of time off all year, and no sick days, I made just over $20,000.  This with over 30 years of extremely well-rounded medic ...
