That we are to always use mL instead of cc when transcribing liquid measurements.  This may sound like a stupid question, but I am wondering if this would be true when transcribing the dosage of normal saline.  Would it be 1000 mL or 1000 cc?  My supervisor is gone for the day, and so I cannot ask her.  What do ya'll say?

cc is on the prohibited abbreviations list - through JCHO.

The use of mL is the correct way to type liquid measurements, whether a drug, IV fluids, drainage from a wound, blood loss from a surgery, or whatever. If it's a liquid measurement it should be mL and not cc.

Thanks for that insight. For years I have typed out cubic centimeters when a doctor said cc and was never corrected by the doctor or when QA'd. That is now a mental note that I will use starting tomorrow.

According to BOS 3rd addition, page 209,cc is considered to be a dangerous abbreviation as determined by the Joint Commission. So for all liquid measurments (including normal saline) you would use mL. The only time to use cc is when referring to mass in measuring tissues, organs, and specimens of solid volume, for example,a 25 cc prostate

cc is NOT on the JACHO list of dangerous abbreviations, but rather being considered for POSSIBLE inclusion on the DNU list.

Google for JACHO dangerous abbreviations and you can print a list out for yourself.

Of course, you should always go by what your QA or client prefers.

I have accounts that specifically state DO NOT change cc to mL and accounts that always want cc to be changed to mL.

The client always has the final say.

cc vs mL - hmmm

I was advised recently that mL was used for liquid volume measurement, and cc was only used for measurements of surface area (i.e., wound measures 3 cc).

Cubic centimeter, though in U.S. hospitals, the trend is to avoid using "cc" at all, for purposes of error reduction. When handwritten, it can look a lot like "00" and ml (milliliter) is for all intents and purposes the same thing. However in wound measurement it would be CM (centimeters) not CC

Hopefully it does not happen to many times, but already has happened to me 5 times.   Just in time to make my pay go down EVEN MORE!!!! ...

My Granddaughter Has Just Informed Me

I AM APALLED! Clearly she has not discussed this with me until now. Her husband is in the Army, she is a new mom and wants to do something to contribute to her family.  I have told her this is the wrong move to make. I have explained to her that though I have done this job for 35 years, she will be unable to find a job when she finishes her training. Personally, I believe the school is a ripoff. I don't know which one it is.  I have an email for the recruiter and I would love to c ...
