Could be mulberry stones or mulberry kidney, enough of a problem to warrant nephrectomy.

"Mushy" kidneys could actually be correct. Soft kidney stones are referred to as "mushy" and are more difficult to remove than hard ones, hence the need for a nephrectomy.
