Ringers lactate - Lucy

Posted: Jun 13, 2013

The doctor dictates ringers lactate. How do I type that out. I find Ringers lactate and Lactated Ringers. Are they both capitalized and which one comes first. " The patient was rehydrated with ringers lactate for fluid."

Ringer's lactate - cap, apostrophe

a word about pharm word rules - research

I think a lot of people forget that just because the BOS makes rules about apostrophes and what not, those same rules do not really apply to pharmaceutical products. For example, we don't use apostrophes for eponyms (something named after a person) such as Lyme disease (not Lyme's disease) as instructed in BOS.

The pharmaceutics industry does not go around changing their labels every time BOS makes a change in policy, so something like Ringer's lactate will always be Ringer's lactate. It's always good to verify with a manufacturer for the correct way to write a pharmaceutical product.

A good example would be Monsel's, as in Monsel's solution. If you google that word without the "'s" you will get a hit by Steadman's medical dictionary powered by Drugs.com showing it without the "'s". This may lead you to believe that it simply Monsel (after all, Steadman's is supposed to be a reliable source, right?) Instead, look at the listings for the product label at the link below.

Having worked as a pharmacy tech and seeing the product labels, I can't tell you how beneficial that experience was to expanding my transcription knowledge base.
