Orthopedic - plb

Posted: Jun 10, 2015

Can someone verify for me the correct way to transcribe this -
first dorsal compartment or 1st dorsal compartment?   Also - please give where to verify/prove this if you can.   Thanks!

Depends on account specifics and if it is the beginning of a sentence. - SleepyMT

Spell out "First" if it is at the beginning of a sentence, but either choice would be correct unless account specifics dictate otherwise. I always go for quantity myself ;)

No, not beginning of sentence! Seems as though this should be specified across the board, and not just by account.

Across the board would be too easy! ;-D - SleepyMT

Sure would be nice though!

And who would be doing the specifying, - exactly?

The MT Police? The Official MT Terminology Commission?

The people paying for the transcription get to make the rules. There is no "across-the-board" regulation. Just pick one and get on with your life. If the client doesn't like it, they will let you know; then you do it their way.

Spelling should not be client-specific. Maybe a dictionary (Stedman's possibly). I wasn't looking for 'regulations', just consistency and correctness.

Do not appreciate the snippy attitude.
The issue you raised was not - xx
[ In Reply To ..]
a "spelling" issue. It was a style issue, and the client most certainly does have a right to determine report style issues. They also have the right to determine among various spelling options. One client may want "tendinitis" while another one wants "tendonitis." Neither would appreciate being told by the hired help how it "should" be done. They don't care what you think is the right spelling. They can even choose to have a word spelled in a manner that you or Stedman's or the spelling police might consider "wrong." They're paying for the transcription, they get to decide.

It makes absolutely no difference to anyone but the client whether you type "first" or "1st." You're just a hired keyboard. Find out what the client wants, give them that, and get move on to the next dictation.

When I first got into transcription, my trainer told me the "Golden Rule" of transcription...they make the gold, they make the rules :)

Orthopedic Testing
Nov 12, 2009

This surgeon dictates the same over and over in multiple reports, and I cannot understand what type of testing this is.  "s/l Manuar test reveals 5/5 strength in forward elevation, external rotation, internal rotation, and abduction." "s/l The remainder of Manuar assessment exam of left upper extremity reveals 5/5 strength throughout all major muscle groups." I thought about the possibility of manual test, but that just does not sound like what he is saying.  Thanks so much! ...
