Is 'stridorous' really a word? - Seem to recall I was dinged for it once though doc

Posted: Mar 29, 2011

I could swear I used "stridorous respirations" once and was dinged by QA for it not being a recognized word.

Can anyone confirm its viability as a bonafide term?

TIA early birds!

stridorous seems to be a "doctorism" that is acceptable. However, there is a stertorous (noisy snoring sound). I read somewhere, and darned if I can find the website now, that stertorous respirations are commonly heard in the comatose patient or sleeping patient.

I believe it should be strident respirations, but my QA person believes anything the doctor says is a word and changes to stridorous. It is not a word, and according to the BOS we are supposed to correct doctorisms, but QA apparently has not read that part. I can't find stridorous as a word anywhere either. I guess it is up to your QA person and how many times you want to argue with them on it. I have given up. They tell me all these words are words that are used so much that they are accepted as words. Sounds like a bunch of BS to me. Doctors make diagnoses, not words.

I have it all the time but use 'stridulous' instead of 'stridorous' - No such word as stridorous no matter what docs thi

They really need their own dictionary, and I don't mean a medical one. We get dinged if they insist on using it, but if we don't use it, we get dinged for not transcribing verbatim.

So far no problem with stridulous respirations though....yet.

Yep - sm

Either stridulous or stridulent as per link. Hopefully, you won't get dinged. I did and argued and was told it was acceptable becaused it is used all the time. Who the heck knows anymore. We get told do this, don't do that, then changed to do what we were told not to do. Very hard to keep up with.

have a good day

thanks for clearing that up for me as well-nm - anon

stridor is a word, so stridorous is correct - sweetgirlsmom

[ In Reply To ..]
Stridor are intense, continuous, monophonic wheezes; musical quality, high-pitched, noisy, vibrating, caused by upper airway obstruction. Stridor - stridorous.

Stertor are harsh, discontinuous, crackling, heavy snoring type, nonmusical sounds. Heard in comatose patients. Stertor - stertorous.

Stridulous - shrill, creaky, hiss, chirping. (Insects stridulate. They make a strident sound by rubbing parts of the body together - crickets, grasshoppers). Stridulent.

Strident sounds are harsh, discordant, loud, insistent. (There was no mention of medical terminology). Synonym for stridulent.

Stridor is a word in the medical dictionary. It is a noun. When we change a noun to an adjective, we add ous. Stridorous is simply a different form of the same word. Erythema, erythematous. Emphysema, emphysematous. Granuloma, granulomatous. Fibrin, fibrinous. Fiber, fibrous. Glaucoma, glaucomatous. Lymphoma, lymphomatous. There are many other medical words that end in ous.

We also change a noun to an adjective by adding ive. Exudate, exudative. Congestion, congestive. Restriction, restrictive. Obstruction, obstructive. We do recognize different forms of the same word. Ambulate, ambulates, ambulated, ambulating, ambulation, ambulatory.

Stridor and stridorous are real words which are used by doctors all the time. When we understand clearly the word the doctor is dictating, when the meaning matches the illness and treatment, and when the spelling is consistent with other words we use, we should type it. The only exception is when the doctor, clinic, hospital, or QA tells us they want a different word.

Doctors treat hundreds of patients a week. It is impossible for them to remember the exact details, so they dictate reports and refer to them later. The reports are read by other doctors and medical professionals to make decisions on appropriate treatment and carry out the procedures. If the wrong word is in the chart, a wrong decision could be made.

Stridor is caused by upper airway obstruction. Would you want a respiratory therapist giving breathing treatments or a doctor giving anesthesia during surgery to make decisions when the wrong word was inserted into the report? A patient's health and life depend on accurate reports. We owe it to the doctors and patients to be absolutely correct.

Doctors have a medical degree and examine patients. MTs do not. Doctors are legally responsible for their reports. MTs do not get sued. MTs can learn a great deal, but the doctors read medical journals and understand the science behind it. They attend medical conventions and training programs to keep up with new discoveries. They work with other doctors and share the language of medicine. Doctors will always know more than MTs. We should trust their choice of words and type stridorous when we hear it.

The MTSO that has hired me needs me to have Office 2010 Professional, whereas I have Office 2013 Professional.  They said the only reason 2013 won't work is because of the Word version.  I remember sometime back that there was a way to set your Word version to a previous version with the push of a button.  I've searched the internet for clues, but all I see are instructions for converting 2007 to 2003.  Nothing about converting 2013 to 2010.  If I can't ge ...
