Capitalization question for NOT proper names... - please respond

Posted: Jan 13, 2011

So since I started with this new company, they have implemented capitalizing things like "I am sending the patient to Neurology".  The patient will follow up with Cardiology.  Now, is it just me, or are these NOT proper names and therefore shouldn't be capitalized, or is this a new rule that I have missed somewhere?  I thought if it is "UCSF Neurology" that would be capitalized..

am I crazy?  This is driving me a little nutso.

Thanks

I wouldn't capitalize neurology or cardiology but some clients do prefer it so I adhere to their request. ; )

My company's rule was that if it was a department they were talking about (even if not said) you capitalize.

Must be the new thing to do... - MaMel

One of my accounts just did the same thing. Their explanation is "If you can omit the department name and insert a physician name, then capitalize it." So, "Patient was seen by Cardiology" would be capitalized. But "Patient was seen by the cardiology department" would not be capitalized, because you can't stick a name in there and have it sound right. But then that contradicts the other rules! So I just give them what they want.

Totally client preference. - NM

to Neurology - Lee

I think a simple way to look at it is this way: I am sending the patient to Mary. I am sending the patient to Neurology. A proper noun is name of a specific person, place, or thing. So if a person's name could go in there, you would capitalize it, but I am sending the patient to the neurology department. Hope this helps.

I have been going back and forth on this, but doc says, "He was also found to be hypertensive. Patient's hypertension was managed by *anesthesia* and a 12-lead EKG was obtained."
