What the companies will tell you about VR - me in CA

I have recently interviewed (on the phone) with two different MT companies that I see are hiring on the board and mentioned here. BOTH told me that I would increase my speed substantially if I used their VR platform as a reason to only pay me pennies (one 3CPL and one 4CPL) for doing VR.
From my experience, that tends to be a completely untrue. My current job uses eScription, which IMO is one of the best VR softwares out there. It also shows you how many lines you have typed in VR and how many as straight transcription. Last night I was interested and determined which made more money.
After 10 years of editing experience (using multiple platforms, 2 years using eScription), I made $22.46/hr straight transcription.
VR? I made $12.72/hr.
The numbers don't lie. If you manage to make more than that using VR, that's great (and could use hints). Unfortunately most of us won't. I'm tired of companies telling you how wonderful it is. It is just one more way to squeeze us out of the system.
If you are interviewed and a company tells you that, I would encourage you to ask them more questions. I wish I had. I will next time.

The only exception would be if your hands are troubling you in some way. I do eScription VR and it is very accommodating to the fingers, not a lot of corrections needed. I can see if you have arthritis, carpal tunnel, etc, you won't have to hang up your MT hat as soon if you don't mind making less money.
It's really a shame. I pictured VR taking us over, not keeping us but paying as minimum wage.

He then started this big spill about how the entire industry would be going to VR sooner than later and how this company would also be on board with this and asked me if I would be willing to learn VR. He said that he "felt sorry" for MTs because they were so quick to "not want to learn VR" and the MT is the one missing out, because it really is an easier way. I told him that I had spoken to many MTs that did take time to learn and the complaints were not making enough money, not that it was difficult or they didn't want to learn. He asked me again if I would be willing to learn VR and I told him sure, I would be up to learning anything, but if I wasn't making money I would move on. Well, I didn't get the job, LOL, guess it intimidates a company if we actually want to make money while working for them:)

Why Do Companies Who Don't

The company I work for has gone VR (on most jobs). I cannot make any money doing this. My pay has been cut approximately $150 to $200 every two weeks. They have already taken away the incentives, and now if you screw up a couple of times on demographics, you do not get paid for the job, and the third or fourth time you are pulled from the account. There is no perfect company and/or job out there. You can post on here and ask about any company you want and you will hear good and bad about them.
