Very sad pay at most companies - but

It amazes me how many people try to make others feel bad for accepting these positions. Unfortunately right now these wages are what this market is and people who need a job who need to work to live don't have a choice but to accept these positions. So they do so only to have to constantly listen to others saying they are "stupid" for taking it and they are the reason the companies continue to do so. Yes there is an option to get out of the field and work elsewhere but for those who love MT work and need and/or want to work at home and not have the added expense of gas, wear and tear on auto, work clothing, etc., no they don't have a choice.

So basically congratulate these people on getting a job, have your own opinion as you are entitled too but stop making others feel bad for accepting a job regardless of what the job is or what it pays.

Especially with the economy the way it is be thankful there are jobs available whether they are good and/or bad - they are still jobs which not everyone has.

Trying to make others feel bad because MT pay is so low, or to make them feel guilty for taking jobs they need is, IMHO, a form of bullying. Nobody can know anyone else's situation. Perhaps in the new year, we can all try to be a little kinder and more compassionate toward each other? Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!

Yes, it may be bullying but it's really dumb for us to accept these low wages. Can people just not go out and do something else, even fast food, rather than accept these kinds of wages? It does make it hard on the rest of us. People will do what they will do, but it is not smart at all for any of us to continue to accept these kind of crap wages. It has got to stop!!!

This is not really bullying. It is a labored opinion. I am thankful for people who know it is not right, and are not afraid to say so on this board. We are all so afraid even too here for the companies check these boards. They want to know how much is being leaked out and by whom. Don't think they do not, as they do. Why...because liars like to keep from being detected. I do not want to even work at home..there are no inhouse jobs. They used to be 24-hour in-house and now nothing. What is being done by the services should be looked into as these are sweat shops and should be unlawful. They investigated Kathy Lee...I see absolutely no difference. What is an MT in India getting--I wonder. Cheaper labor there--yet what is left 1 and 2 cents? We cannot live here in the US on these wages. We are being used, yet what choices are there. Now we are the victims of unfair labor practices and we are fighting each other, while the companies and CEOs are out shopping with their bone_sses while we HAVE to keep our hands on the keyboards and make our quota any way we can to just be classified as full time for benefits that we have to also pay for. I am the 47%. Don't think we can ever be in that top 10% no matter how hard we work.

The game also of saying we can edit and it will be twice as fast...so we can cut the pay in half. Same mind set as women in the workforce getting lower wages than men. Same here being that we get lower wages and benefits because we do not work directly for the hospitals. These jobs are being taken over by VR and there are many people at the top to pay first. They all want their cut. We are all only 2 cents shy of the bottom. No different than Papa John's or Hostess.

True! Why should the fact that someone actually enjoys - what they do be grounds for paying them less?

It doesn't mater whether you're an MD, a McDonald's cashier, a dog walker, garbage man or medical transcriptionist. If you happen to like what you do for a living, that should be used against you as a reason for paying you less. And for the most part, physical location shouldn't factor in, either. I understand in some jobs, such as a cop walking on the beat in a high-crime area, as opposed to one doing office clerk work, would be grounds for different pay, such as other high-risk vs low-risk jobs. But when it's the same job either at home or on site, like ours is, the pay should be equal, at the very least. Especially considering the heat, electricity and internet connection come out of our own pockets.

No one is enslaving you. Yes, working conditions are terrible but you can choose to find another career. Many MTs have already done so. You can do so as well.

Staying in these jobs moaning about being victimized is like staying with an abusive husband. Nobody can get those wives to leave, either, and probably for the same reasons.

Counseling might be a good first step in breaking loose enough to see that there ARE alternatives. I would try the same groups that counsel abused wives because I think for some of you the problem is very similar. You need to come to grips with the idea that YOU have worth and that you CAN and SHOULD get out. Maybe they can help you find training.

No one needs to "look into" anything. You just need to find a new job instead of hoping things will get better.

I would like to see offshoring of ANY American jobs banned. NO exceptions. A company would either have to make a profit using American employees, or go out of business. I would love it if all MTSOs failed, and went out of business. Then hospitals, clinics and doctors' offices nationwide would have no choice but to re-open their transcription departments, because I don't think point n' click EMR could carry the full transcription load. If every doctor used point n' click for every report, they'd have to hire more doctors to carry the patient load that would result from the doctors having to spend so much time at the computer terminal. And considering what doctors (or even nurses) make per hour, that's a pretty expensive "MT Dept", if you ask me.

They dont have to do that. They can ship it OS any time they want. - Their business, they pick who does it. nm

Here is my 2 cents. If you are absolutely destitute, you are going to be homeless, starving on the streets with no shoes in the dead of winter, then I can understand how you out of desperation would accept a job that barely pays minimum wage, if that, and that only if there is absolutely nothing else available to you that paid better. If only ill paid jobs are available to you, then take the job that requires no specialized skill set. If you are not in that position, if there is ANY way you can survive without accepting such work you should not take it. You are indeed depressing the salaries for everyone when you do this. And you need to think about what will happen should you ever be dependent on that job to support your family -- which is the position that many of us are in. You are hurting us now, and possibly yourself later. Salaries will keep going down as long as they can hire people to work for subsubsistence wages. Once we stand our ground, and by the way this is what unions forced its membership to do back in the day when unions were a positive good and not the mixed bag they are now. In those days, the typical family had only one breadwinner -- usually men, or women who had no husbands or were single. Unions prevented people (like you) from accepting jobs for less than what was needed to support a family, as well as fighting terrible working conditions. Over and over again, I read on this board about the crying need for a union, and I agree. So why not unionize yourself, and do not take a job that does not pay you enough to meet your family's minimum needs (even if you do have a husband with a reasonably good job.) Under no circumstances should you accept an ill-paying job to buy luxuries for your family. It is an utterly immoral thing to do because you are condemning men and women (who have spent a lot of time and likely a lot of money to acquire a specialized skill set) who have families to take care of, to a life of poverty and miserable working conditions. And again, you are hurting yourself should you ever become one of us.

I have actually heard of this (proposed?) HIPAA opt-out provision where patient's can specify that they want their medical records handled strictly in the United States. These 3 cpl, well, can't think of a word bad enough for them. . . may just be trying to see if they can get away with what they have been paying in India if by some wild chance they do have to bring American jobs back to America. I think I will just tell them to park it somewhere the sun don't shine.

should be made on what is best for you and only you. You have to look out for yourself because no one else is and you people who think someone should turn down a job because its going to affect you get over it. Everyone is going to look out for themselves and/or their family before anyone else plain and simple, like it or not that's the way life is always has been and always will be.

Look out for yourself first and foremost! You do what you have to do to survive and sometimes unfortunately not everyone agrees with your decisions.

helping themselves by taking these kind of jobs. They are helping the companies to train the VR so they can send more work to India. No matter how desperate you are for work, you are hurting yourself in the long run. Even if you accept the lower wages, claiming it is an income, you will be out of work at some point too because you helped train the VR for the Indians.

is pretty much the going rate for ME, does it really matter how much lower the rates go? I doubt too many are raising families on ME pay, although some like myself might just be squeaking by supporting themselves (because I have everything paid for).

I see ME as eventually being a 1 cpl job and all the badgering and complaining to those willing to accept this is not going to bring it back to an acceptable way to make a living for most of us, so we might as well just move on and try to get something better for ourselves if we still need to work.

The company I work for has gone VR (on most jobs). I cannot make any money doing this. My pay has been cut approximately $150 to $200 every two weeks. They have already taken away the incentives, and now if you screw up a couple of times on demographics, you do not get paid for the job, and the third or fourth time you are pulled from the account. So, I see it all of the time, people on here complaining about no work, yet the company they are complaining about is HIRING. My job recently did this as well. Periodically, I will cruise the MT help wanted, and see some companies that list the system requirements as "must have XP." My question is this: I wonder if they mean must have at least XP or do they mean MUST HAVE XP. I find it difficult to believe that any system out there only works with XP, as Vista has been around for a good long while and even Windows 7 (which I wish DocQ would update to) has been out for a bit. I have recently interviewed (on the phone) with two different MT companies that I see are hiring on the board and mentioned here. BOTH told me that I would increase my speed substantially if I used their VR platform as a reason to only pay me pennies (one 3CPL and one 4CPL) for doing VR. There is no perfect company and/or job out there. You can post on here and ask about any company you want and you will hear good and bad about them. A company that is great for one person may be awful for another for various reasons. Depends on what you are looking for and/or what you are willing to just deal with.
