ASR Gone Wild - Sandy

Posted: Jul 10, 2013

Whenever the word "present" is dictated, we automatically get a bolded heading: "HISTORY OF PRESENT ILLNESS:"   Can anyone explain how the program is "trained" to do this.  Kinda scary!

Anyone else finding large gaps with nothing transcribed? - Sandy

On ESL doctors who are very difficult to understand it will leave out several sentences and not even indicate unrecognized dictation, so it is as if we are not transcribing these things for
.04 cents per line!

Un-train? - Mary

I've heard that unhappy MTs are trying to un-train VR, put in things that are wrong so the system forgets what it has learned. I think the idea is to try and break VR so they can have straight transcription.

I wondered about that (sm) - Sandy

The program seemed to be very slowly learning the first couple of months and then all these outrageous things started appearing and disappearing.

I'm glad you said that, because I've noticed consistently for the last month that whole paragraphs are completely omitted from VR documents.

It really chaps me to have to transcribe that for 1/2 pay. Of course what should happen is we should get paid 1/2 rate for the 'edited' portion and full pay for the transcribed portion. WebMedX used to do just that paying 4 cents for edited lines, 8 cents for transcribed lines within the document. Oddly enough, guess who owns WebMedX now?

Nuance. So, I know for certain that they have the technology to separate edited and transcribed lines, and since they do not do it this is proof that is just another scam to get us to work for half pay. It comes down to a conflict of priorities.

The client's priorities are to get oral dictation rendered into written medical records to comply with various laws, as cheaply as possible and without too much liability. Product produced: Oral dictation.

An MTs priorities are to do the best job that can be done, the fastest way they can to earn the most money. Product produced: Written document.

The company's priority is to get the job done the quickest they can with the least amount of difficulty and to garner as much profit as they can, from both the client and the MT. Product produced: Nothing.

The entity in the middle (the company) doesn't have a marketable skill per se except to grab product produced from one end and pass to the other end, and vice versa, collecting money in the transition. The sole purpose for being is to take as much money out for doing as little as possible, because again, they have no marketable skill and this cog in the wheel has produced essentially - Nothing.
