Changing Font in Word while working - lrlady

Posted: Jul 08, 2013

I don't know if anyone has struggled with this and can help me.  My eyes are getting worse and worse and I need to increase my font for work.  When I work in Word I know I can change the font through the tools but I have to change it manually every time I start a new document.  Is there a way to make it a default size so I don't have to do it to each document?  It is time consuming and (at least for me) sliding the bar to increase is a hassle with multiple files a day.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  I asked all my kids(ages 14 to 23) and nobody knows a way and you'd think they would since they know everything about computers!

Default font in Word - Anonymous

I don't know if we are supposed to post links to websites here, but the instructions to change the default font in Word vary depending on what version you have. I Googled "Default Font in Word" and found a page that lists instructions on how to set the default for several different versions. No offense, but I don't understand why people can't do their own research.

No offense? - lrlady

No offense but that is NOT what I am asking. Why must everyone be so rude on here! I thought my fellow MTs would be willing to help. I am talking about while I am typing I need the font larger to see it better I do not want it larger for the client. And I did research and found nothing to help me and thought someone here may have had the same issue. As an MT I am very competent in "researching".

size for you and not for client --

Here is what you do - see msg

Left click your ctrl button on the computer. While holding that down, use the mouse wheel to go up and down. This will change just your view of the font size, not affect the client end. It will make it larger or smaller.

You can try that on Internet pages, too, including this one!

I am sorry, I guess I misunderstood what you were asking, you did state the default font. If that is not what you want, I guess you will have to change it every time since the experts at your house can't figure that out.

Control + the plus sign enlarges, Control + the - minus sign reduces

at least on my Windows 7, as it did on XP. It works with Word docs, on the web and in most formats used in research results, even images. Don't recall if this keyboard command was default or if I manually created the command. If you need to do that you can go to the system and/or program help sections and search keyboard commands.
Thanks for posting the keyboard shortcut - not OP

I was also wondering how to zoom in EditScript and the scroll wheel on my mouse doesn't work so thanks for posting the keyboard shortcut!

I have mine set at 150 - please sm

[ In Reply To ..]
The setting is at the far right on my task bar after hide/show symbol. When I click on it, it says Zoom. I think the default is 100%. I changed it to 150% and it doesn't change with each document, stays at 150.

Thanks! - lrlady

[ In Reply To ..]
I will give that a try. I wonder if it needs a specific % to stay at it for another document. I have been at 126, 134, etc. lol I sure hope this works and nice to hear others with this problem. Thank you!

which is under View, then you can change the percentage to what ever works for you. Mine maxes out at 120% before it goes off the edge of my monitor and I currently use 112%. I have Word 2003 and that may be different on newer versions.

I use that exact setting too - AnaPhylaxis

I also use Word 2003 and have my zoom setting at 112%. Anything more than that gets kind of scary big even to my failing eyes. I sympathize with the OP because, even with my glasses, sometimes Times New Roman 12 pt at just 100% blurs together for me.

Re our notes about the ctrl/mouse wheel - see msg please

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't know if it will "default" each time you go in, but it only takes a couple of seconds to use the ctrl/mouse wheel.

I will give it a try! - lrlady

Thank you. One of these has got to help and will try them both out when I get on my second acct later today.

Thank you to everyone! - lrlady

The control + mouse scroll works great. Thanks so much for everyone's help. It's a great help on the eyes and I knew my fellow MTs had the solution!

Change zoom % permanently - DH

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm using Word 2003. To change zoom percentage permanently (for each document) you need to change normal.dot. You can do this in your current blank document by clicking View, Zoom, then change your desired percentage. Then, while pressing SHIFT + CTRL simultaneously, click File and you should see Save All. Click Save All (which also changes normal.dot). This should now keep your setting for each document.

However, in Extext, depending on your version, it will not stay for each document. The newer versions of Extext will, I believe. For the version that doesn't, you can create a macro that you run each time you're in a new document. Hope this helps.

CHANGING JOBS/CHANGING EMPLOYEES

BUT-it seems to me that what is happening here is a huge waste of time and money. If the companies paid enough, ACTUALLY had work when they hire, were able to ACTUALLY pay the employees at all,  and treated employees well, then the transcriptionists wouldn't go looking for another job and leave.  THEN the companies wouldn't have to maintain recruiters, pos ...
