Changing margins in MS Word - MT who knows

[ In Reply To ..]
I use MS Word 2007 for Windows XP and MS Word 2008 for iMac and what you do to get the pop-up window to change margins is go under the "format" drop-down menu and select "document." You will then get the pop-up window where you can change margins to whatever you want. You can also change margins in selected areas of your document such as in "sections" of the document. Hope this helps. I've been using MS Word a very long time. It is really easy once you get to know Word well. Word is a great program.

Hash marks on margin - twirler1

Thanks for that information, but what I am talking about is the hash marks on the margin. There are numbers 1-8 on the left side and then those little hash marks. WHich one is 1.2?

Thanks again,

Hash marks on margin . . . huh?? - MT who knows

What version of Word are you using? I have never seen what you are talking about and I've been using MS Word for over 10 years, on Windows XP and Mac; 2003, 2007, and 2008. I packed up my Windows XP because Mac is so much better, and on my version (2008) I have six views: draft, outline, web layout, print layout, notebook layout, and publishing layout -- that is it -- and as I recall from using 2007 for Windows XP for a couple of years, it has the same views with the exception of two, and I've never seen "hash" marks. Are you sure that it is not how Word might be configured to work with whatever platform you are using? Are you talking about the rulers on the left side of the page and on the top of the page? Why do you need to know "which one is 1.2" anyway? Do you want to set your margin for 1 inch and 2/10ths?

On Tools/Options/View tab, make sure you don't have "Text boundaries" - (sm) Cheryl

checked. Another reason for these "crop" marks may be that you have East Asian languages enabled in your language settings for your keyboard.
Hash marks . . - MT who knows

If you are from the USA and bought your software from a USA company, then the East Asian language option default is not even selected; the only language selected is English; however, if you are from another country, well, you are on your own. It is not difficult and anything can be changed or arranged in Word as easy as pie. I am sure that you will find the language default in a jiffy.

Every program is different, but it is easy as pie about text boxes, etc. If I recall, there are no "hash" marks with text boxes and/or images. If text boxes are linked, there is a marker at the bottom of the box delineating that and if there is text in a box that is not linked and the text runs over, you will not see the text but there will be a marker at the bottom indicating that. I've used all types of desktop publishing software and MS Word is the bottom-line basic of these and not as powerful; however, they all are a little bit different but the concepts are the same -- meaning a little bit different in that where things are located and how they appear are different for example with MS Office, QuarkXPress, and Adobe, but that doesn't mean you don't know. If you know the concept you can learn the tool and basically that is all a computer is, a tool -- learning the "tools" is simple. Just try to remember the concepts and you can figure out what it is you want to know no matter what program you are using.
Excuse me, but I am from the USA -- have never been out of this county. SM - Cheryl

My own USA installation of MS WORD enabled other languages that you can find on the Start Menu under Microsoft Office Tools. The USA version of Word allows you to use different languages. You might want to research this a bit more.

I am not talking about text boxes with hash marks. I am talking about the corner crop marks that can appear if you have different languages enabled on the Start Menu or the Control Panel keyboard settings.
Other languages - MT who knows

I apologize if I upset you. :-)

Yes, I know that Word can enable different languages (and other software programs have this features as well); however, the default is English and unless there is a reason why you have chosen another language, why is another language even selected. ?? I have no need to research the language options in MS Word anymore than I already know, because I have no reason to use another language. Actually, finding out this information about language options is very simple, and so, I am guessing that if you keep messing with what you need and are using that you will figure it out.

I know where you are coming from in the "Start Menu and Control Panel" in Windows XP; however, it is the same thing with iMac, "Apple and International Preferences." I don't work with another language other than English.

Why are you working in another language other than English, if you are from the USA? -- just curious. I would say change the language and turn off the language bar option.
I am not working in another language. I simply offered a solution for the crop marks. (sm) - Cheryl

You assumed I was working in another language. You also confused text "boundaries" with text boxes and confused the issue more.

Office automatically installs the Microsoft Tools that can enable other languages without you realizing that. The OP is not the first person this has happened to according to many posts on various tech support boards.

Nov 07, 2014

Is there a way in AutoCorrect (Word 2010) to change a comma to a period and then cap the next word to make VR go a little faster?  The platform at my old company did this automatically, but MS Word does not : ( This is so frustrating having to change from a comma to a period (or vice versa)--which as you all know happens constantly...and then change the next word to be capitalized (or uncapped)....my wrists are killing me, not to mention it takes so much TIME.....
