Shorthand or Instantext? Opinions, please - SAM

Posted: Jan 23, 2011

Although my FT job is VR, I've just accepted a PT position that is straight transcription.  Although I'm very fast (and accurate), a fellow MT told me one of the above programs could potentially double my production.

I'm not familiar with either program or exactly how they work and are incorporated into transcription.  I'm gathering they are a much more in-depth version of an autocorrect program.

Could someone please explain the differences between the two programs to me (in "dummy" terms, LOL) and which one you find the easiest to learn?  I'll be working on the Bayscribe platform at the PT gig, if that makes any difference.  I know Bayscribe has its own expander program but, having used it in the past, I didn't find it any more impressive than Word's autocorrect function.

Thanks in advance :-)

If you doing mostly VR, Instantext doesn't have much value, but great for straight transcription.

Shorthand is basically auto-correct. Instantext, for me, at least, has a huge learning curve that I never mastered. People who conquer it seem to love it. Just the book of instructions is the size of a Reader's Digest.

On the contrary, Instant Text has huge value with VR. - s/m

Do a search here and on the VR board for Instant Text and how command entries treat repetitive tasks much the same way macros do, but you don't have to learn macro language.

Since you say you didn't master Instant Text, you don't know how much you are missing! :-)

I started out with Shorthand. It is a good program, but after playing with the trial version of InstantText, I switched over.

With Shorthand, I had to remember my shortcuts. There was a reminder window, but I still had to remember at least the first two letters to see all the possibilities. The more shorts I added, the more letters I had to remember to get to the ones I needed to see.

With Instant Text, I don't have to remember shorts. I can still set them up that way, but I do not HAVE to remember them. The ones I use the most, I will remember, the other ones will be there if I need them.

Plus, InstantText will analyze your files to help you build custom libraries. So if you have a dictator who uses the same phrases over and over again, you can analyze his files to help you build a custom library, just based on that. Then you can link his library to other libraries to get even more shorts available to you.

It's more expensive, but it pays in the long run.
SH is flat wonderful and so easy to use, but - IT builds dictionaries for you.

With SH, if you make a system that creates them according to a system that doesn't require you to memorize them, your eyes stay on the text all the time you work--a tremendous speed advantage.

You won't ever be as fast checking lists of abbreviations built for you by IT, but its building feature will have you up and running much, much sooner. I'd never go to IT from SH now (my system is GREAT), but if I were starting out from scratch now I'd go with IT.

BTW, IT's dictionary-building feature is the one big advantage that makes it worth studying to learn. Otherwise, IMO, SH's ease of use and general compatibility with other systems have it all over IT. SH is also a very sophisticated system with many features. (Also BTW, in my opinion, comparing a system made for amateur use like auto Correct to a professional system like Shorthand is wildly inaccurate. Sort of like comparing the keypad of an iPhone with your laptop, the general idea at least. The only reason Auto Correct is used at all is that it's free, and I always recommend people avoid that mistake.)

Bottom line good news--you can't lose with either of these.

Here is a chart that compares both programs - from another forum...

InstanText And Emdat Inscribe

I am just starting to use Inscribe and have InstanText.  It will link up with Inscribe, because when I type, entries are showing up in IT, but when I go to expand an entry with the semi-colon as usual, it will not expand.  Anyone know how to fix this?  I have linked it, checked the link automatically box, also.   Thanks! ...

InstanText And Entrada Platform
Dec 05, 2013

Have been lucky enough to have been working on a straight typing acute care account for the past 3+ years and am only now transitioning over to a whole new platform with VR for several different clinics. I have been using my InstanText software expander program for years.  Unfortunately, it now appears that the new VR platform, "ENTRADA," does not support InstanText.  The only expanders are ones you create in its own AutoCorrect, yet I am unable to import the autocorrect entries I hav ...

Here's Another Shorthand Tip...
Oct 17, 2009

Someone recently had an issue with Shorthand and Autocorrect both operating at the same time, and they were apparently fighting with each other, because both of them had some of the same expansions/corrections, so the user was getting duplicate text. I finally worked out a system for myself where Shorthand is used for actual expansions, shortcuts, etc. Autocorrect is restricted to correcting misspelled and mis-capitalized words. If I have done it correctly, never the twain should meet, and I can ...

Shorthand V10 Help
Jun 16, 2011

I've been using Shorthand all along on my work computer and love it, particularly the fact that it works anywhere - email, Word, platforms, etc.    I recently downloaded the trial version for my home computer, but, while it works fine in Word documents, it won't work at all anywhere else.  Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? ...

ShortHand - What's So Different About It?
Feb 11, 2012

Ok, I downloaded Short Hand expander program but, for the life of me, it looks just like the standard auto expander/auto correct that comes with word. I've looked over the very brief tutorial that came with it and I don't see where this will increase my productivity anymore than my current Word-based AC/AE work for me. All those Short Hand experts out there (and I believe there are at least a few of you), can someone tell me how this works differently than what I'm already usin ...

Shorthand 10 Help
Nov 17, 2014

Since I'm unable to use MS auto correct with my current platform I explored Shorthand, a program I used years ago.  They've gotten too smart for me.  All I want to do is add words on the fly.  The screen I get when invoking SH10 shows no way to save any entry I might make.  Surely I'm missing something here.  If anyone can point the way I'd appreciate it--enter text, save and move on.  Thanks.   ...

Anyone Use And Like Shorthand?
Dec 03, 2014

Does it work interactively in MS Word?  Can you easily transfer your entries from Autocorrect to Shorthand?  I was checking out Instant Text but apparently now you have to download it, not avail on disk.  I think this means if your computer crashes and/or you want it on a new computer you have to RE-BUY it (at almost $200)...yeah I don't think so!   ...

Can Anyone Tell Me How To Convert Shorthand 10
Nov 25, 2009

I'm getting a company computer and will be working on that one and mine.  They don't allow Shorthand (or any other program) to be put on their computer, so need to convert my Shorthand to Word autocorrect entries for the work computer.  I would do it manually (you know, one entry at a time) but I have about 4500 entries and need an automated way.   Thanks in advance ...

Need Shorthand 10 Help With Font . . . .
Feb 19, 2010

Don't know why this is not working . . .  I need to get the "Suggestion Window Font" to a bigger size.  I have changed the font to say Times New Roman 14 and it shows that it changed it in the "Suggestion Window Font" but when I go into my report and run a shorthand word it stays small, never changed.  I got everything else to a bigger font except for this.  I hit "okay" after I changed it. Any suggestions would be appreciated!  Thanks!     ...

Problems With Shorthand 10

Shorthand Problem
Aug 01, 2011

I am utilizing shorthand as an expander.  During entering shortcuts, I seem to be inadvertantly pressing more than one key (my flying fingers) that is shutting shorthand down in the middle of a report.  It is a bear to try to finish a report without the use of shorthand (we do get so used to it).  It there a way to turn shorthand back on while you are in a report, instead of finshing the report long hand and then closing down the transcription application and reloading it to bring ...
