Filing for Partial Unemployment - sm

Posted: Mar 22, 2013

Any advice?  I was shy over 8 hours last week due to OOW (towards end of pay period, so no way to catch it up) and over 10 hours this week now (my last scheduled day was yesterday, and I'll be checking in to see if I can catch up some today on my day off, which won't be 10 hours, of course).

Is there generally a certain number of hours, rate of pay, etc., that one has to be shy of actual scheduled in order to qualify?  I understand it may be different from state to state, but any info/experiences that any here might have to offer would be appreciated.  (I did request a transfer from my TSM to another team, but was denied, then requested some more backup account/s and haven't received any reply to that.)

By working on your day off, you are taking work away from me during my scheduled hours and then I have to take other hours and make people short who are supposed to be working then.

I'm told to "flex." - OP

I agree, it stinks, but it's not my fault my account is overstaffed now. Somebody was hired who is taking away my hours.

You would qualify. - and some states have a week wait time

So file for last week and this week right away, then last week will probably be held, and then you would start receiving for this week. I wouldnt be able to live without filing.

Thanks. I checked online for some info, but not finding much, so I'll call them. - OP

Did found out that the weekly benefit amount for my state for my last quarter's earnings is a paltry $146 a week. Not sure I'd be getting anything at all then with proration, but it's worth a try, I guess.

To "flex" means to work later in the day you are scheduled, not work on your off day.

To me, flexing means workign when there is work... nobody wants to have to do it but its a fact of life in the MT world.. I would get over it Kitty if I was you.

I see you posting on the M*Modal board too. Perhaps you work at both companies, I know some posting here do, but you appear not to know very well how things work at Nuance.

To paraphrase from an old communication (not exact wording, to comply with board TOS): If you happen to run out of work, the best time to get lines is after 6 p.m. EST, on Fridays especially.
Well Kitty Lady.....I hate to be the bearer of bad - news to ya, BUT....
[ In Reply To ..]
the companies we work for have done their best to destroy any teamwork that we all were proud of once. They have turned us into "all for yourself" and get your lines whatever day and whenever time you possibly can. Our managers are tickled to death to see those queues empty and all the work done because it means bonuses for them. The two big companies that rule the MT world don't care about over-hiring, quality, whether or not you have work on your "shift" or not. They care that they make BILLIONS of dollars on OUR backs. They don't care WHO does it or how little we are paid to put those billions in their pockets or who has to bump who out of the lines.

I used to be like you....and then I couldn't pay my bills. Work when you can, as much as you can, whatever TIME you can. We ALL are suffering because of it so don't start passing blame around because they, too, are trying to make a living. Blame the company.

By the way, flex time is exactly what it says, you flex to a time when YOU can do it and when there is work. Has nothing to do with doing it on the same day, just the pay period.

In my state - ....

UE is based on the actual monetary amount. So if you typically bring home 500 a week and the amount you are bringing home is less, you are eligible for UE. They don't go by the hours worked but the amount of your paycheck. They base it on the prior 3 quarters (I think). It's been awhile since I did that. First time I had ever applied but that's why it's there. Good luck.

Thanks. - OP (nm)

The amount I was given was the difference of what I had been making and what I was making when I filed. I didn't receive it for long because I found a another job but it did help while I was with them.

Unemployment calculations and NJA - Varies by state (see msg)

In my state, your unemployment benefit amount (what you would get if you had no work in a week) is based on the first four of the last five calendar quarters. If you work some hours in the week, a percentage (I think it was 75%) of what you earn in the week is subtracted from your unemployment benefit amount. So if your unemployment benefit amount is $300/week and you earned $100, you would get $225 ($300 minus 75% of $100).

But each state is different.

Is It Really Possible To Qualify For Partial Unemployment?
Oct 10, 2010

By year's end, I will have made about half of what I normally make working the same number of FT hours.  I've read suggestions on here to apply for partial UI, which could probably save my behind - I'm not sure how much longer I can pay the rent and not sure where me and kids would go.  However, is it really possible to qualify for that considering the nature of our work, paid by production?  Could'nt it be argued (wrongly so!!) that we just slacked off and did ...

I've heard this before, but was unable to find anything about it ... I live in Georgia.  I went through all my PTO over the holidays because of NJA, and now it's the beginning of the week and I'm already 4 hours down.  What good does it do to "work" on holidays, when there's never any work?  I guess they just can't stand paying that holiday pay ...
