Thunder/Lightening Storm - anon

Posted: Jun 08, 2012

What is this companies policy for working during a thunder/lightening storm?

dont think there is a company policy - but here is what I do

If it is bad, I unplug the computer and make up the time later. Of course, I notify the CCM. Not sure if she actually checks Doppler radar to make sure you are in a storm or not, so when the storm passes, I would get back to work.

I agree...shut down, notify CCM and make up the time when it's passed. That is also what I always did. Don't know if there is a policy regarding that or not, but I'll look for that too.....I'll post it if I find it.

Thanks, also need to... - anon

That is exactly what I did. She also said to make a note of it on my time card in TeamWork.

Regardless of any company's policy, I shut down in a lightning storm. - nm

Electrical outage - Nobody

We had electrical out because of rolling blackouts one morning last week. I sent the CCM an e-mail. I went back later in the evening to make up the time. It is a good idea to put a note on your timesheet as a reminder.

It Must Depend on the CCM - See Msg

In my region/my CCM, we have to make up time when THEY say they need it, not "later on." We're not allowed to just jump back on after the storm or work on our day off. So, that means we have to keep checking e-mails and hope they need the help when we are able to do it.

Very inconvenient. So, I work through the thunderstorms and hope I don't get electrocuted.

Seriously?? that is very inconvenient...sm - Original Sunflower

how long have you been here? Just wondering if they try to take advantage of newer workers. Since we all became employees I still make up time when its best for me. A couple of times a few years ago I heard "we need the most help at such and such a day and time" but never was forced to make it up at that time. I would try and do a little when they needed it most but for the most part they have left me alone and done it when it worked for me too.

Seriously - Yep

Seriously. Have to check MModal e-mail. If there happens to be a note that they need help midnight to whatever on whatever day, then that's when I would have to make it up. I can't just start my shifts early the rest of the week to make it up, unless there happens to be an e-mail from the actual night before saying they need help, etc.

SO, I try not to have thunderstorms or get sick.

Notify CCM/RTL - NY MT

I also e-mail my CCM and RTL team before the storm gets to my area to let them know that I will be shutting down until the storm passes that way I have documented contact with them. I check Accu-Weather on line during this time too.

Those of us in heavy t-storm areas during the summer may just as well pack up and take the summer off if we logged out everytime we had a lightning storm. SO, no, I don't log out, I'm in FL.

I'm also in FL and no, I do not log out either. Would never make a penny. - FLMT

...so logging out everytime there's a storm is out of the question. And they can last for hours and hours.
I can't log out either. - msmt

I would be logging out and shutting down every afternoon almost. We have lots of thunderstorms around here. I would never get any work done.

Forget the thunderstorms, I worked through a tornado!!! - L&L

until it took out the power.

yep, I think you have us beat on that one. - msmt

I live in a mobile home, so I know if there was a tornado, it would not bode well for me.

Generators - Hurricane Victim

We had a bad hurricane several years ago here in FL. We had a generator and it kept me working during the 12-day power outtage. Kept the refrig going, lights, ceiling fans, computer. Sorry, no air conditioning, but you can't have everything unless you have a giant, giant one.

I highly recommend it if you live in an area where long periods of power outtages are more likely/common than other areas. In my brain, the price of the generator paid for itself. I could work, no food got spoiled...

We had a generator but - sm

not enough gas to last long, and all the gas stations were of course closed for several weeks. The natural gas was disconnected for everyone as well, so that wouldn't have done any good either.

Depends on if you have company equipment or not - no policy

[ In Reply To ..]
Honestly, if you have a company computer like I do if it gets fried you get paid technical downtime at your benefit rate until they can get you a new one which is a good couple of days. They probably want you to take off during lightening storms, but then they will yell at you anyway for not working your schedule or hitting your line counts. You can't win either way, but at least if it gets fried you get a few paid days vacation.

If you have your own equipment I would avoid those lightening storms altogether

Do You Work When There Is Thunder
Jul 28, 2010

Talk about great timing, I finally started getting work this afternoon, just as a typical summer thunderstorm hit. It sounded like it was centered about one block away. I shut down my computer for half hour. Do you work when there is lightning nearby? The lights weren't even flickering, but it was so close (lots of simultaneous flash-bangs) that I didn't want to take the chance. ...
