do you work when there is thunder - and lightning?

Posted: Jul 28, 2010

Talk about great timing, I finally started getting work this afternoon, just as a typical summer thunderstorm hit. It sounded like it was centered about one block away. I shut down my computer for half hour. Do you work when there is lightning nearby? The lights weren't even flickering, but it was so close (lots of simultaneous flash-bangs) that I didn't want to take the chance.

I do - MarineMom

I shut down and unplug. Battery backups are great for unexpected power failures but won't help much for a lightning strike.

I shut everything down and unplug it at the first rumble of thunder(sm) - anon

I live in the deep south (Ga) and we have been having some pretty horrific storms recently so it feels like I have been down more than up. About eight years ago I did not shut down and one night while working my house/computer was hit by ligtning. The storm was still over 20 miles away, you could see the lightning behind the trees far away in the distance, could not hear any thunder but it zapped my house and got my computer and washing machine. Since that time I shut down as soon as I hear the first rumble of thunder.

Yes, I will work until electricity goes out...which usually happens anyway since I am rural. NM - MissD

Its such a rare occurrence in San Francisco that when - s/msg

happens, I usually rush outside to watch it. Around here, one clap of thunder is usually front-page news.

Not since I almost got zapped through the earphones. (nm) - Backwards Typist

Our house was hit by lightning a few years ago and I lost the computer, some lamps, the a/c caught on fire, etc. A big mess. Now I turn off the computer if there are thunderstorms.

If it gets bad, I do. - Stella-JRG

When it starts crackling in my headset, I shut down. I lost a C-phone one time in a thunder storm.
