Started my first day of college :) - mom2huskies

Posted: Sep 29, 2012

I just wanted to post that I completed my first week of college. The first day was scary, but by the second day I felt much more at ease. My first class happened to algebra, so wish me luck. I know that I am making the right decision, so I am hoping that I can start counting the days to when I can just give my notice. It is going to be tough, but it definitely is going to be worth it.

I went back and assembled all those science classes I had taken back in the day and I only lacked 3 classes to apply for the R.N. program, so I'm down to those classes. I will apply to 3 local R.N. programs and 2 Masters in Public Health programs and cross my fingers that someone lets me in. I want this next year to be the last I EVER do MT. Honestly, it shocks me whenever I note someone learning to be an MT (usually just on this site). MT being a good job is OVER. Gone. Kaput. But you might be happy to know that a 20-year MT already has so much knowledge that as a 40-something, you can waltz right into that Anatomy-125 and Microbiology class and tear. it. up. Seriously. Haha!! I am! You know a LOT, people!!

I started at rad and had only a little bit of H and P's and consults. I now wish I would have started in the Basic 4. I really know my stuff in rad and suprise myself on how I do not hardly even have to look anything up. My hats of to you MT's who have been doing the Basic 4. I know you folks really know at lot, sometimes as much as doctors. You are a good group and i am jealous.

I emailed you (sm) - Gotta find a major.

Hey mom2huskies - good on you for your bravery and insight about getting out of this stinking business. I emailed you through the mtstars system, but my return email address looks like it could be spam (you'll know why when you see it). I can't help it - that's my real last name. I think we ALL need to be finding other careers sooner rather than later. This business is sooo over.

congratulations - mom2greyhound

I just started my first semester back at college, too. I have a new outlook, hopeful and also looking forward to when I can leave MT behind and not feel half-sick logging in to work. My first week back in school was near terrifying. But it has been SO GOOD being around people again, getting out more. I feel much more upbeat despite my job situation being the same. Best wishes to you and all others making the effort to get out of this profession. There is much support for us here and many in our shoes! Keep up the good fight.

Hooray!!! - MT Gone

I know going back "out there" is frightening in some ways, but trust me, it will get better and become easier with time. I feel a little twinge of victory every time one of US makes the break. Best of luck to you, pretty sure you're a fellow dog lover too! :-)

Couldn't agree with you more. - 4vrtpng

Just started my first semester of radiology technology school to take x-rays. Had to do anatomy and physiology 1 and 2 over the summer and kicked butt in those two classes. I am starting to feel human again and not like a naked rat mole stuck underground all the time. The only thing that stinks is that I have to go back underground every night to work. Can't wait for the next 2 years to be over with. My people skills are coming back quickly, thank goodness. I find I still like to be around people and will enjoy this field enormously. The money won't be shabby either.

Good luck to all going back to school. Remember, to get out of being chained to the chair all it takes is one step and the rest will fall into place.

I tell me myself everyday that failure is not an option and I will make this work. So, the 40 hours of school a week and 40 hours of work a week, makes one very tired, but I am doing it and thriving so far.

Wow! I am inspired! - mom2englishpointer

I just entered my program this fall - surgical technology. I kicked but in my A&P classes as well. I had to take medical terminology as a prerequisite, and I scored 100% on every single exam in that class. Ha! I could have actually tested out, but it was an easy A and applied to the GPA needed to compete for entry into the surg tech program.

I passed the hardest checkoff today - scrubbing, gowning, and gloving. Yes! Half the class did not pass and will have to repeat it. We are just now starting to get into the surgical instruments. It is so cool to see all these tools that I've been transcribing about for the last 4+ years. I cannot wait to get into the OR and see all this stuff that we transcribe about.

Good luck to you! Hang in there and keep up the faith.

My people skills are coming back as well, but I did have a few "foot-in-mouth" moments. I am settling down now though and learning my manners again. Ha!

I've Just Been Accepted To College!!
Oct 22, 2013

After going back and forth for two years, I finally decided to apply for college and I was accepted, yay me!!  Actually, I already have my Associate's degree, so this isn't my first time in college, but I feel like I've taken a huge step in my life and I was so excited I just wanted to share with my fellow MTs!  Just an FYI, after researching an endless amount of colleges, I chose WGU majoring in Health Informatics and am even considering my MBA there as well because the ...

College Degree
Feb 17, 2015

I see many job ads for coders that specify a college degree is required.  I am in coding school currently but only have a GED.  What do you think chances are I can get a job with no college degree?  I currently work as a remote MT and have almost 20 years of continuous experience in that field and was hoping that would help me get a job.  I am not at all, however, interested in getting a college degree. ...

I'm Not Sure What College These Docs Went To
Jun 08, 2015

But I noticed when my son graduated from college, it was a mid range college in no way an ivy league school, that he spoke very intelligent, used correct grammar, and actually formed correct sentences. I made mention to him, that in listening to his friends talk, I was VERY impressed and happy they actually learned something in school..He said, "I don't see why, that's what they teach us in college, this isn't high school anymore mom." I'm just not hearing it out of these d ...

Community College Vs. M-Tec/Andrews
Feb 11, 2011

Is it better to go with the tried-and-true Andrews or M-tec as opposed to a local community college that offers MT courses? I was thinking it would be better to stick with the former, but was intrigued by the fact that the local junior college seems to be promising "internships". I'm not 100 percent sure yet, as the informational meeting isn't until the beginning of March, but wondered what the prevailing wisdom might be on the subject. Thanks in advance for any info. ...

Getting Out Of MTing And Going Back To College
Oct 13, 2011

Mting is no longer for me.  I'm 34, single mom, need a better career.  I can't seem to decide on which career path to take.  I want to get my bachelor's degree because it will make me feel like I have accomplished something, and I would like to have a degree and possibly get my master's someday.  I can't decide between healthcare information management and getting my RHIA, or something totally different and getting a BS in business-human resources man ...

Goodbye MT World, Hello College
Jun 25, 2012

After being an MT for 12 years and wanting to go back to college for the past 2 years, I have finally done it!  I will no longer be an MT as of July 1st, and I couldn't be happier!  I applied and was accepted to WGU and will be getting my BS in Health Informatics. This is a very unique program and my goal is to finish in a year and a half (I had credits transfer in which helps).  Anyone who is interested in going back to college and wants to work in health care with IT, check ...

I can't stand doing MT anymore.  I applied and have received Pell grants, yay!  Now, I need to decide on my major.  I want to be in a career where I can help people.  I'm thinking social work or psychology.  But I keep seeing jobs where they say "BA in Human Services needed."  Wouldn't this just be social work?   ...

Suggestions For Improvement Of The MT Program At My College
Sep 27, 2010

Based on what I've been reading on these blogs, I realized how little prepared the grads of the MT program from my college actually were. So I wrote a letter to the assistant director of the program, making suggestions on how they could improve the training they offer; things like exposing students to REAL dictation, rather than just CDs of actors reading scripts; exposure to ESL dictation; including a course in speech recognition editing; including a course in medically-oriented ...
