MModal versus sweat shop - drowning

Posted: Feb 16, 2013

Have you ever compared MModal to a sweat shop?  I have over 30 years experience as a transcriptionist.  I was quoted 10 cents a line for straight transcription and did not get the doctors I was promised I would get. When I question my CCM, she says "you are primary".  No I am not, as there are at least 2 other transcriptionists getting first dips on that account.  I was quickly switched to VR at a whopping 4 cents a line.  So now they are getting my skills at 4 cents a line and trying to control when I go to the bathroom or the fact that my fingers are not on the keyboard as much as they want, even though my line counts are normally over 2000 per day.  I was quoted 6 cents a line for VR, but paper work says 4 and because I need a job, not going to argue about it.  Also my PTO pay went down!  You can bet I am actively seeking other employment and will be glad when the day comes when I no longer have to deal with this company.  It occurred to me yesterday that their training for shortcuts is not to benefit me with an extra 16 minutes a day and one more report, it is because they are paying slave wages at 4 cents a line and being greedy!  I think it should be illlegal for any company to outsource to India!!!!!!  Oh by the way, the one that always makes the nasty comments, who definitely is MModal personnel - STUFF IT!

If you are being monitored about your keyboard - time, it must be CCM because

I dont have any problems with that. Are you referring to the statistics they send out every week? The ones that show your average line count and proficiency stats? If so, those emails are just an FYI. Nothing threatening about it and certainly not monitoring your bathroom breaks. Good luck on your job hunt. I hope you find something soon! I firmly believe that if a person is unhappy then they are better off to move on.

Some of us cannot "move on." I lost my car and do not have transportation, only my family for necessities. I live in a small town and no bus or cab. I have no decent clothes. Years ago I would have figured everything out, but now I say "it." I will be retiring soon (early) and lose my health benefits, but too bad for me. I do not make near 80 weeks per pay period, but somehow I still have my beenies. Yes, I am unhappy. I think poster is doing 2000 lines per shift (I assume it is every shift), then the PTO is tied to the wage as well as production. If you ask them about it you will get the run around. I am math challanged, but I know these last 6 months I have done more than the 6 months previously and mine went down. I repeat, some of us cannot move on. One poster said the grocery store pays more than we make. I always thought we were specialized and should make more.

I agree with everything you have posted. It is not my CCM that is monitoring keyboard time, it is someone they have now specializing in trying to get more work out of you. KittyKat you are dead on. We should be paid what we are worth. Years ago outsourcing companies were charging 24-26 cents a line and probably more now. I don't know how MModal charges. Some of us are stuck. I was given very little warning that my job was being outsourced and lied to by both the hospital and MModal. I only get 4 cents a line for busting my hump for 2000 lines a day and I do mean busting it. I see where most benefits went down. They are dehumanizing us. 10 cents a line for straight transcription is low, but 4 cents a line for VR when some of it takes longer than I could have transcribed it.

Unfortunately it is the nature of this business now. It is not what it was years ago. I once had a nice cushiony job with a hospital too and thought I would retire there. Great benefits and good money.

Its becoming more and more uncommon now to find hospitals that have an in-house staff. Most of them outsource their work. I had applied and gotten hired with another hospital after finding out my dept was getting outsourced only to be told that they too would be outsourcing their transcription within a matter of months to Nuance, but that I would be welcome to join the team and contract with Nuance to become their employee in order to still have a job. I declined.

I read here on these boards that companies are paying as little as 3 cents per line for VR and Nuance paying EVERYONE a little more than 4 cpl not matter what your experience is or how long you have been doing this.

It is the new reality and not just this company; its every where. This job is not the same job it was years ago. It is now mainly editing and proof-reading speech recognition reports. Its technology and thats just the way it is. If hospitals and clinics are not using VR they are using EPIC or something like it. The days of straight transcription are gone. You might find some straight typing jobs, but the pickings are slim and the likelihood of the job lasting for any period of time before they either outsource, go to VR or EPIC is truly a long-shot. Face it, it is what it is no matter who you work for.

I left - see msg

I left and got a job in a medical office scheduling people and other clerical tasks for an hourly wage.

It's not a high-paying job, but I have less stress and make more than with MM.

You can do it, too!

M*Modal Lies - Been There Too!

You should have heard the story I got when I was being hired and none of it was even close to what they promised. I was told I would do an account that was mostly op notes (which I love) and I never even say it. Got stuck on some pediatric hospital (no experience whatsoever) and all detailed reports with columns, etc. I worked one hour on a report and made a total of $5. I asked my CCM about it and she said they didn'the have any accounts like what I was decribing. I was totally ripped a new one by someone who said I wasn'the putting in the demographics right. We kept going over them and she said, "can't you see it, can't you read? I couldn't see it, because IT WASN'T THERE. In frustration she told me to call the help desk, which I did and lo and behold it wasn't there and I had to redownload the whole thing. No answer back from her, no apology, nothing. That company is the worst of the worst and get out NOW.

They all lie. No surprise there. Only surprise is that anyone - would beleive anything they are told. nm

My Expenses Go Up And The Mega-rich Companies Go Down With Sweat-shop Labor
Sep 26, 2012

I had a thought with the recent decision to not take a non-medical transcription job. I told the owner of the transcription company that I needed to be paid 8 cpl for this job and she was only paying 6-1/2 cpl. I told her that my expenses for everything are rising, food, shelter, gas etc. and she told me that the account that I would be doing this work for demands low cost for their transcription because of the work being sent to India, Pakistan, and the Philippines. This is a huge constructi ...

End Point Versus Endpoint And Hand Grip Versus Handgrip
Mar 13, 2012

Two words that come up often for questioning.  These are strictly used in an orthopedic setting.  Stedman's and Dorland's list end point and hand grip HOWEVER the office transcription manager,  girl is asking for me to correct this to endpoint and handgrip. She is only basing this on what an old medical transcription company she used to work for had her typing. I would rather base it on the  medical reference. The doctors are not even aware this has come up. She is ...

VR Versus SR
Feb 20, 2010

I am not familiar with VR and have never used it, but I understand that there is a difference between voice recognition (VR) and speech recognition (SR). I am told the difference is that with VR the program has to be trained because it goes by voice only, sort of like us getting used to different dictators when we start a new account.  SR is supposedly different in that it goes by speech alone, meaning I guess, just the actual words dictated and is not affected by voice differences. Does ...

BNP Versus BMP
Jun 08, 2010

Hi, I have a dictator going over the patient's hypertension.  At the end of the section he says (BMP/BNP) was unremarkable.  I have no values, so I don't know if it was a single test or multiple.  If he's talkign about hypertension, I would think that BNP would be feasible, but it really sounds more like BMP.  Any help is great! ...

CCA Versus CCS
Dec 20, 2011

I have a question for you coders out there.  I decided I want to make a career change from MT to coding.  My question is, is it realistic to expect to pass the CCS exam after completing Andrews or other online schools?  I looked into AHIMA's courses they recommend on their website and they only train you to take the CCA exam (Career Step and Kaplan).  I want to be a CCS and not waste my money training for CCA.  I don't see job listings for C ...

ER Versus ED
Aug 12, 2012

When physician clear dictates "emergency deparment" why does ASR continue to put "emergency room?"  I suspect it is because ED has fewer characters than ER, hence, less pay, and this is easily overlooked if one is not focused.  I see it so much that I have an expansion to change "room" to "department."  Anyone have any other ideas why this is? ...

A Versus An

I know when in doubt defer to what the physician prefers.  But suddenly we have one doctor replacing "an" with "a," and is just doesn't sound right.  I was always taught to us a when followed by a consonant and an when followed by a vowel.
