VR versus transcription - PA MT

Posted: Nov 12, 2009

I was just wondering if anybody is getting transcription anymore.  Throughout this whole entire pay period I have gotten nothing but VR, which makes it extremely difficult to make decent money unless you spend 24 hours a day online.  I am wondering if they are going VR with almost every dictator in order to screw us out of more pay.  This company really knows how to screw with you.

I get a mix but it is by far more ASR than transcription. I'm afraid it is coming down one day doon to all ASR and no more of the other.

VR/ASR - tired and broke in Oregon

Does anyone know of any companies that provide the equipment AND have no ASR/VR?

vr - versus transcription

I'd say these days I probable get a 60/40 mix of ASR to transcription. However, I'm able to get in roughly 3-4 times the lines with ASR versus straight reports. So, I don't really see much of a difference in my income.

More lines w/ ASR - oops

Alright, another coworker to ask. I get about 95% ASR and have since coming back to MQ in February. I don't get as many lines as I did on straight transcription and I am experienced.

I would like to hear more about how you do it. Do you go through the whole report first and put everything in the right format, do you just start right in and reformat as you listen. Are the reports you get pretty repetitive or do you have many different dictators w/ many different styles as well as many different types of reports?

VR vs typing - enigma

I've been wondering if I was the only one with this problem: It takes me LONGER to edit an ASR report, in general, unless they are echocardiograms or vascular imaging studies, than it does to type from scratch. I get a lot of consults and they are not repetitive; each one is different. I like typing op notes because most of them aren't on ASR yet. Some days I get 80/20 ASR to typing. I type fast, maybe 100 wpm if I can understand the doctor. Editing does not go that fast, when you have to change every other word.

I think they will eventually go to all VR, sm - JMO

The problem with that is if you have to spend more time in a report, you're screwed out of making any money for that hour because you spent too much time on one report. The people that don't see any difference in their pay, are not big producers. If they are doing the requirment of 150 lines in an hour and can do 150 more in that hour on VR, they are making 300 lines, then they wouldn't see a difference in their pay. The people who do see a difference are the people who are actually typing well over the 150 lines in an hour. So if someone who types 250 lines in an hour can only do VR for an extra 100 lines in that hour or even 150 more lines, then they are only doing 350-400 lines for the hour, thus never achieving the pay they would have received if they were getting their pay for strictly typing. Someone typing 300-350 lines in an hour would really have to edit a lot of documents to get the pay their used to getting for typing.

VR Versus Straight Transcription
Apr 28, 2011

With my company I get about 80% editing and 20% straight transcription, about half as much per line editing as for transcription, of course.  Personally, I'd rather transcribe a difficult dictator than edit most anyone.  My pet peeve is when a difficult dictator's reports (which used to be transcribed) gets changed to editing status, and it takes just as long to fix the VR document but now at about half as much pay. ...

CLINIC VERSUS HOSPITAL TRANSCRIPTION
May 03, 2010

Hi all!  Quick question, which one do you think you can type more lines a day on, using your short cuts, drop ins, templates, etc., clinic transcription or hospital and why?  I have been typing acute care hospital transcription for 7 years and am thinking of taking a clinic job, but the money is slightly less.  I figure it won't count that much if clinic is as fast as my physical therapy job was I had 8 years ago.  Thanks! ...

All-in-one Computer Versus Laptop For Transcription Opinions
Jan 07, 2012

I am curious which would be best for transcription, all-in-one or laptop with larger monitor.  It just seems to me that with an all-in-one you would have less mess on your desk than with a laptop hooked to a larger monitor (I'm ancient so I need a large monitor to be able to see), so I'm leaning towards buying an all-in-one computer rather than the laptop, but have not made my mind up completely yet.  Do any of my other transcription buddies have an opinion on one or the ...

Nuance: Speech Recognition Versus Transcription Line Counts
May 13, 2012

As I was working today I thought about speech versus transcription, and it occurred to me that I was transcribing a good deal in each speech report I "edited." Why is transcription done for a full report paid any differently than transcription done in a speech report? In other words, why don't I get paid my transcription line count for the characters I am transcribing in a speech report, particularly since a great deal of these speech reports require almost re-transcribing completely due to ...

End Point Versus Endpoint And Hand Grip Versus Handgrip
Mar 13, 2012

Two words that come up often for questioning.  These are strictly used in an orthopedic setting.  Stedman's and Dorland's list end point and hand grip HOWEVER the office transcription manager,  girl is asking for me to correct this to endpoint and handgrip. She is only basing this on what an old medical transcription company she used to work for had her typing. I would rather base it on the  medical reference. The doctors are not even aware this has come up. She is ...

VR Versus SR
Feb 20, 2010

I am not familiar with VR and have never used it, but I understand that there is a difference between voice recognition (VR) and speech recognition (SR). I am told the difference is that with VR the program has to be trained because it goes by voice only, sort of like us getting used to different dictators when we start a new account.  SR is supposedly different in that it goes by speech alone, meaning I guess, just the actual words dictated and is not affected by voice differences. Does ...

BNP Versus BMP
Jun 08, 2010

Hi, I have a dictator going over the patient's hypertension.  At the end of the section he says (BMP/BNP) was unremarkable.  I have no values, so I don't know if it was a single test or multiple.  If he's talkign about hypertension, I would think that BNP would be feasible, but it really sounds more like BMP.  Any help is great! ...

CCA Versus CCS
Dec 20, 2011

I have a question for you coders out there.  I decided I want to make a career change from MT to coding.  My question is, is it realistic to expect to pass the CCS exam after completing Andrews or other online schools?  I looked into AHIMA's courses they recommend on their website and they only train you to take the CCA exam (Career Step and Kaplan).  I want to be a CCS and not waste my money training for CCA.  I don't see job listings for C ...

ER Versus ED
Aug 12, 2012

When physician clear dictates "emergency deparment" why does ASR continue to put "emergency room?"  I suspect it is because ED has fewer characters than ER, hence, less pay, and this is easily overlooked if one is not focused.  I see it so much that I have an expansion to change "room" to "department."  Anyone have any other ideas why this is? ...

I know when in doubt defer to what the physician prefers.  But suddenly we have one doctor replacing "an" with "a," and is just doesn't sound right.  I was always taught to us a when followed by a consonant and an when followed by a vowel.
