GRRR...mme - changed a drug

Posted: Feb 09, 2010

I typed AcipHex just liked the manufacturer spells it.  Is this wrong?  MME corrected it to Aciphex.  How would you type it at MQ?

MME is just being a jerk and wasting their time. - nm

dictator is on 100% QA - so I was thinking

[ In Reply To ..]
maybe it "looks good" if the MME finds something that they can possibly change, even if it's a personal prefence like the spelling of a drug using a capital letter within it? oh who knows....

yeah... tell me why they do that???? - Anyone?

[ In Reply To ..]
I thought they were getting paid a measley 3 cpl to edit this stuff, so why on earth would they waste their time on changing that? My QTL told me that they are not to change drug spellings to suit them.
If there is an MME out there willing to share, I would love to know how you make any money when you do stuff like this!!!

Changing Things - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
If the dictator, work type, MT, whatever is 100% QA, then MME has to make changes, using their judgment on what they think is correct. Remember, they get audited, too, and if they don't change something they think is incorrect, they could very well get marked down themselves. Nobody is picking at anybody. Chill.

MMEs are just trying to do their job the best they can.
NOBODY IS PICKING ON ANYBODY, BUT - Julianne

when you correctly spell a medication, in this case, AcipHex (registered name), and it is changed by QA, it becomes a frustration and as an MT you feel upset and helpless.
to: Changing Things - MT - huh
[ In Reply To ..]
You said... MME has to make changes, using their judgment on what they think is correct.

Don't they also have to look things up (like the MT)?

I do not understand the comment "what they think is correct"

If the MMEs get audited, as you say, wouldn't it be in the best interest of the MME to LOOK THINGS UP BEFORE CHANGING THEM?

The MTs are not PICKING on the MMEs. Chill. We are just asking for clarificiation as to WHY you change things as to what YOU THINK is correct.
Chill. - Wow
[ In Reply To ..]
So it's ok for an MME to change the spelling of a registered name of a drug "because they think it is correct?"

I don't think so. MMEs should be held to the same standare MTs are. Just because a dictator is 100% QA does not mean anything HAS to be changed in the report!
We're all under the gun here - just trying

to get some clarification like the above poster mentioned. I just don't like my work being changed and sent on to the client as if I typed it that way!
Drug Capital Delineation - MT
[ In Reply To ..]
The drug manufacturer's do all sorts fo things to make a drug stand out, kind of like a logo. Not too long ago, we weren't supposed to use any logo-type capitalization for drugs, and Saunders Pharmaceutical Words never used logos. It seems to have changed over, but I still say that BOTH are correct, and as long as the first letter is capitalized if it's a tradename drug, then it should be fine and nobody should get corrected or marked down.

This MME was obviously afraid of getting marked down--or he or she was corrected as an MT and is just doing what she thinks is right. I seriously doubt an MME would take the time to correct something he or she just "felt like" correcting. If you've ever worked in QASAR, you know this is a horrible program and a very time-consuming way to make corrections.
No. MMEs who make changes without researching are - just guessing and costing everyone. nm

and this discussion is crazy! I do not believe there is an "aciphex" and will never type it that way. The MME's can change it all they want, but I will continue to type AcipHex from now on.

there is aciphex and AcipHex... - drugs.com

what did the doctor mean? Generic: aciphex or Brand: AcipHex? - gen:brand

I don't know the - answer to your question

[ In Reply To ..]
He just says the drug in most of his charts, and I have always type it that way with the capital H because that's how I put it in my expander. I have never had a problem until today, and obviously have never heard anything negative back from the client. Maybe they don't care....aciphex, AcipHex, or even ACIPHEX....

generic or brand - elaine

[ In Reply To ..]
You never lower-case the name of a brand name drug just because there is a generic form! If they say Toprol, it's "Toprol". If he says generic Toprol, you still type "generic Toprol".

thx - I was like

No, it doesn't actually. - elaine
[ In Reply To ..]
Aciphex or AcipHex is correct. Not lower case, as it is a brand name.
elaine: no, there is also "generic aciphex," therefore brand name is is AcipHex - see message
[ In Reply To ..]
"Generic aciphex is a proton pump inhibitor used to treat gastro esophageal reflux disease. Rabeprazole (Generic aciphex) can also be prescribed for the short-term treatment of duodenal ulcers, and for Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a disease that causes the stomach to produce too much acid. Generic aciphex works by blocking a specific enzyme essential to the production of stomach acid.
I give up... - elaine

Look, Aciphex is the brand name.
The generic form of Aciphex is rabeprazole.

I don't really care what an internet site says - particularly one that capitalizes the word "generic".

You need to understand that the internet is simply a large index of information from many contributors. You can also find reference to Aciphlex and Aciphux.

Look up Aciphex in the PDR. I wouldn't consider internationaldrugmart.com to be a reliable medical reference.
Look, you need to understand that the "internet site" is Drugs.com - nomsg

The "generic" you are speaking about is rabeprazole. If you use the name Aciphex (or AciPhex) you MUST capitalize the first letter as it is a brand name.

You have got to open up that mind a little bit to understand the information you are handling!
I can't believe how you fudged that up. - wow
[ In Reply To ..]
The generic form of Aciphex is rabeprazole. It is not aciphex with a lower case 'a'.

End of story.

on the other hand, I have product inserts, pens, a clipboard, a prescription bottle, and sticky pads for AcipHex and/or Aciphex and/or rabeprazole sodium. period.

what's your problem?
THIS poster is correct, IMHO - LOL

It couldn't possibly be any clearer.

AcipHex
Generic name: Rabeprazole sodium

It's so simple that I'm just sitting here giggling at everyone debating over it. It's right there is black and white, no gray area here, lol!

The company trademarked both - L&L

Aciphex and AcipHex (work for local GI doc and have met company drug rep).

Both are correct.

MME is wasting - time!
[ In Reply To ..]
If there are 2 correct ways to transcribe something, I do not change it to the way I want it to be. If something looks fishy to me, I try to verify it before I change it and leave a note to the MT which I guess is a waste of my time because apparently nobody reads them. :) Have I made mistakes and been called on them? Only 2 since I started as MME in July, and yes both were careless because I was trying to go too fast because I only make 3 cpl.

I transcribed a report that I knew the doc was on 100% QA and was going to be looked at by another MME. I got dinged for a comma the doc dictated but I left out because it was incorrect. So you see, even MMEs aren't immune!
this is how Rxlist is listing it...I always type AcipHex - sm
