Another reason to leave MT field. - Says right in our DocQmanage

Posted: Aug 03, 2010

In our speech machines in DocQmanage Enterprise Platform, we can either go to  member longin or "About DocQment Enterprise Platform".

In DocQment Enterprise Platform  it actually states "Solutions include interactive speech recognition for clinician SELF-EDITING" and shows a picture of 2 doctors looking at a computer screen editing.  Then go to upper right and open up Duke Primary Care and the case study.

Duke Primary Care improves their process with SpeechQ.

Read the case study to learn more.

So there ya go.  MQ has it where the doctors will now dictate ASR and doctors will have a choice to either edit themselves and then sign their own report right away or send it to an "ME" to fix the report.  Which is already happening, but more and more will go this route or send work to India.

MQ wants only Tier 3 and maybe some Tier 2's and you have to be a CMT through AHDI and the rest is done in India.  MQ only wants the best while you give India more and more jobs.

The best thing to do is get out of MT field and do something else.  Being a medial assistance in my city already started having waiting lists for next year in colleges and forget nursing.  That is a 3 year waiting list.

Oh I think this will be hilarous if any doctors - really look at the ASR

dictation and try to "edit" it. Good luck to them on that one.

You stated... "The best thing to do is get out of MT field and do something else." Then you recommend getting on a long waiting list for the MA program, how is that going to be an improvement? Did you know that the pay for MAs is not that great, and they work very hard.

In the real world, how many doctors do you know who have time to sit at their desk editing dictation? If they are not spending time seeing patients, they are not making any money. You show one example of this and then make the assumption that every single physician in every facility will be doing this.

Please stop telling people to get out of the MT field, it is NOYB what people choose to do with their careers. If you want to get out then do so but please let others make their own decision, everyone's circumstances are different.

MQ is not the only employer out there who wants the best, they all try to recruit the best talent. If you become an MA or enter into another profession, I promise the competition for jobs will be just as bad.

I did not ask for people to be an MA, it - was for myself. Forgive me!

[ In Reply To ..]
By the way, you asked how many doctors do I know edit their own? Well, ALL MY DOCTORS do their own dictation. Most Providence Hospitals have gone that route for about 5 years now or longer where I live. They type their own dictation using the GE EPIC system.

There is a great need for MA's in my area and nurses. I am going back into nursing. I used to be an LPN and I know what is involved.

Just trying to help, but this field is becoming dead and I just do not see being a CMT and making India wages is right.

most Providence hospitals? - RI?

[ In Reply To ..]
If you're talking about Providence, RI, your info is incorrect. The hospital docs do NOT "type their own dictation". It is dictated and transcribed by MTs.

Some hospitals only recently went to an electronic documentation system within the past few months, but transcription continues.
I am not talking about RI. Never been there. - All Providence Hospitals
[ In Reply To ..]
and clinics in my area, doctors have been doing their own dictation using GE EPIC system for over 5 years.

I bet Providence, RI is a very nice area, very pretty especially in the fall.
Oh, what is really different? - I email my physician.
[ In Reply To ..]
Not only do my physicians not use medical transcriptionists by doing their own work, but this system they use is now allowing email. So, if I have a question about your health, I email my physician through this EPIC system and she responds back by email.
i see... - thanks

another option - longtime MT

[ In Reply To ..]
Another thing to think about is that MA and nursing may require similar medical language knowlege as MT, but completely different skill sets, such as direct patient contact and the ability to stand on one's feet for long periods of time. One thing I have found is that being a longtime MT has been great training for medical librarianship. If someone has a bachelor's degree, they can still work doing medical transcription and finish an MLIS in two years. Some programs are completely online(including one at the school I went to, although I went to the on-campus program). I transcribed my way through my bachelor's AND my master's degrees (and am now going for a Ph.D. because I would actually like to teach in a graduate program). Being an MT taught me some great research skills which translated really well to modern health reference librarianship (which actually involves a lot more online database searching than it used to).

Thank you! - That is awesome! NM

Hi! Hope you don't mind my emailing you, but I am interested in your education and experience. I, too, have researched becoming a medical librarian. I hold a bachelor's degree and used to work at a library (I know they are all vastly different). I am in Pennsylvania, and Univ. of Pittsburgh offers what appears to be a solid program.

May I ask what type of job you obtained with your degree (s)? It concerns me that I might spend the money for a masters and not be able to find a job, even though I believe if one has a passion for something, it typically works itself out.

You are sooo right about MT in that it has helped me develop many skills!

Thanks!

last year was bad for jobs - longtime MT
[ In Reply To ..]
but this year is better. I actually was looking for a different type of job when I graduated, not necessarily in a medical library, but in distance learning departments of universities that worked closely with their academic libraries. I do have several cohorts who found jobs in medical libraries, and in fact there are a few new openings for medical librarians that have been posted on my school's listserv. I ended up taking a (non-paying) job as a librarian at my church and returning to school for a Ph.D. so that I can teach library school. I'm still working for MQ while in school! The medical terminology knowledge itself from being an MT puts one in a great position in library school to do well in the medical librarianship classes.

Reason For So Much
Oct 03, 2012

I have read countless articles today that state that the reason that so much MT work is being outsourced is b/c there are lack of MTs on the US side working in the industry.  I love when the uneducated write these articles.  They are totally missing the entire reason work is outsourced, MONEY.  There would be plenty US based MTs to do the work provided we were paid what we are worth.  The reason the work even went over to India and other countries is b/c it is cheaper for the ...

What Could Be The Reason For Odd Line Counts?
May 12, 2010

According to the Escript, I'm doing an average of 300 lph on VR but usually at the end of 8 hours, I don't top 1100 liines most days.  On Dictaphone's ExSpeech, i used to consistently do 1800-2400 a day on a combination. I have noticed with EScript that 1 day a week, my lines will hit 1200-1300, and I even hit 1500 one  day, yet the lph were still 300.  It doesn't make sense. No, I do not take breaks.  Half the time I don't stop ...

Possible Reason Only Some MTs Got Back Wages
Aug 08, 2013

My employer, who has several VA contracts, was audited by the DOL last year.  The findings of the audit were that the employer should have been paying us the prevailing hourly wage because the contracts were federal government contracts.  Many people got back pay for the period of time for which the books were audited, but not everyone did because the DOL only audited one of our accounts.  Even though all the rest of the MTs were paid exactly the same way (on a production basis), ...

To CA MTs: I Was Told The Reason I Was Laid Off (along With Others) Is That

MM was laying off a lot of PT MTs. I accepted that since I have always passed their ridiculous 98% (and higher) audits and always worked my shift, etc. So no reason to fire me. However, I've been wondering if the real reason (since I see there are still PT MTs here) is that they don't want any employees from California (or any other state where the minimum wage is too high in their eyes). What do you all think? Are there any FT or PT CA MTs from MModal still working for MModal? ...

Very Interesting, Another Reason My Counts Are Higher During The Day.
Jul 21, 2014

At least, that is my experience from everywhere I have worked. Plus you get the sleepy doctors that can barely move their mouths in between yawns. I also only rarely get operative reports. On the few occasions I have needed to work a day shift, in addition to much better dictation, I get a lot of operative reports (I am tie ...

The Reason For The Low Work Loads Is Multifactorial.
Dec 10, 2014

Let's say Nuance acquires a hospital account and 9 or 10 MTs fall for their line of crap and come on board with Nuance.  These MTs are kept  busy for awhile, usually only as long as it takes to get the VR adequately trained because entire workypes are now being completed in, like, half the time than it took to complete them with straight typing.
